U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns Resigns

Bush named Johanns's top deputy, Chuck Conner, as his acting replacement.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - President Bush today said Mike Johanns has resigned as U.S. Agriculture Secretary, and will seek a Senate seat from his home state of Nebraska.

The departure of the former Nebraska governor comes a little more than three weeks after Alberto Gonzales announced his resignation as attorney general.

"The decision to leave this post has not been an easy one. I grew up with farmers and ranchers as my childhood heroes and my mentors. Representing them in Washington has been a great privilege," Johanns said.

Dayton, Oregon Water Declared Safe

Residents and business owners had to boil their water to prevent possible illness because of high levels of fecal bacteria since Friday.

(DAYTON, Ore. ) - The City of Dayton has declared it's water safe again.

City officials are urging people to flush their faucets for five minutes to be sure all contaminated water is purged from the system, throw out ice, and replace water filter cartridges.

Governor Orders Flags at Half-Staff in Memory of Oregon Soldier

Captain Drew Jensen was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team).

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Governor Ted Kulongoski ordered all flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff throughout Oregon today, in honor of Captain Drew Jensen.

Jensen, 27, of Clackamas, died September 7th from wounds suffered on May 7th in Ba’qubah, Iraq.

Two Arrested After Armed Robbery at Salem Tavern

The suspects were located by Salem Police walking away from their car on Interstate 5.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Last night, Marion County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the parking lot of the Silver Dollar Tavern located at 375 Lancaster Dr SE on a reported armed robbery.

The victim was confronted by two suspects one was armed with a handgun.

The suspects took the victims wallet and left in a vehicle toward the Santiam Regal Theater parking lot.

The incident is still under investigation by the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Dan Rather's September 2004 report on CBS claimed President Bush avoided some of his duties during his National Guard service and that a commander felt pressured to soft-pedal the President's military record.

Rather's says the story was true, and the former "CBS Evening News" anchor is seeking $70 million from the network and other defendants. A verdict in Rather's favor would mean the report was accurate, and all of the negative aspects of the President's military service are true.

Wind Causes Agricultural Burn to Spread‏ Near Jefferson

It is a reminder that fire season is not over. Open burning is not permitted at this time, and agricultural burning is only allowed by permit.

(JEFFERSON, Ore.) - Jefferson Fire District fire apparatus and personnel were called to a brush fire in the area of I-5 and Ankeny Hill Road late this afternoon.

A couple was burning three piles of sawdust and brush in different locations when the gusty afternoon winds caused two of the brush piles to spread, starting multiple fires in an adjacent field.
