Decomposed Whale Lands on North Coast

Experts say an unusual number of sharks are also washing up‏.

(GEARHART, Ore.) - One very nasty decomposed whale washed up today on Del Rey Beach – just north of Gearhart.

GW Fire in Central Oregon Declared a Conflagration‏

The "GW" comes from George Washington Mountain, located near the central Oregon fire.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon Governor Theodore Kulongoski declared the GW Fire located near Black Butte as the state's second conflagration of 2007.

The declaration cleared the way for State Fire Marshal Nancy Orr to mobilize firefighters and equipment to assist local resources battling the fire. The request to invoke the Oregon Conflagration Act was made by Deschutes County Fire Defense Board Chief Tay Robertson.

Keizer Makes Final Arrest in Bomb Plot Discovery

The unnamed teen has been charged with one count of attempted second degree burglary and one count conspiracy to commit second degree burglary.

(KEIZER, Ore.) - Keizer Police say they have continued their investigation into the McNary High School bomb threat incident and made a sixth arrest on Saturday.

Keizer Police Captain Jeff Kuhns says that at 12:45 AM they arrested the single, outstanding suspect, "What we believe was the last remaining suspect was taken into custody and was then transported to the Marion County Juvenile Detention Facility."

Record Setting Pilot Steve Fossett Missing in Nevada

Fossett reportedly left a private airstrip on a ranch south of Smith Valley in western Nevada Monday. He was flying a single engine Bellanca airplane.

(RENO, Nev.) - Media sources are reporting the disappearance of a small plane carrying Steve Fossett, the first pilot to fly around the world solo without refueling.

Fossett is best known for his five world record non-stop solo circumnavigations of the Earth. He is also a long-distance solo balloonist, and sailor. Chuck Allen with the Nevada Highway Patrol says there is no sign of Fossett yet, "Yesterday he left at 9:00 AM hoping to complete ground recon on a project he is working on and he never came back."

Oregon Army National Guard Soldiers Ready for Iraq Deployment

Soldiers from Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Washington, California, and Wyoming are part of the Oregon Guard group deploying to Iraq.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Oregon Guard's 234 Engineer Company, based in Warrenton, will complete their final training this week in Camp Shelby, Miss., certifying their skills as they head to Kuwait to begin their Iraq deployment.

The Engineer Company has been at Camp Shelby since leaving Salem, Oregon on July 13th of this year. During their yearlong deployment, they will conduct convoy security operations throughout Iraq.

Oregon Among Eight States Tapped for National Anti-Meth Campaign

"For more than a decade Oregon has led the nation in admissions to treatment for methamphetamine addiction," said Karen Wheeler, addictions policy manager in the Oregon Department of Human Services.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon is one of eight states selected by the Office of National Drug Control Policy for a six-month anti-methamphetamine broadcast and print advertising campaign that begins today.

States participating in the ONDCP campaign in addition to Oregon are Alaska, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Washington and parts of California and Illinois.

States were chosen based on methamphetamine use prevalence, treatment admissions and existing anti-methamphetamine campaigns, said Robert Denniston, director of ONDCP's National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign.

Oregon Brothers Meet in Iraq After Six Years of Separation

It was a reunion that Charlie said he wasn't sure would actually take place.

(CAMP TAJI, Iraq) - Two deployed brothers -- Staff Sgt. Eric Breeden, a native of Salem, Ore. and Sgt. Charlie Breeden, a native of Portland, Ore. have two very busy military careers that have taken them all over the world.

But thanks to various deployments and overseas assignments, the siblings have been unable to see each other face to face for more than six years. That is --until now.

Ironically enough, they said, it would take a deployment to Iraq and Charlie's promotion ceremony from corporal to sergeant here Sept. 1st to bring them back together.

UPDATE: Three Arrested After Teen Found Beaten, Shot in Newberg

(NEWBERG, Ore. ) - Police in Newberg say a teen was found beaten and shot in the head Monday night.

Police say they received a 9-1-1 call just after 10:00 PM reporting a fight at South College and East Ninth streets between four or five people.

When officers arrived they found a 16-year-old boy who had been beaten and shot twice in the head.

Google News Changes Will Advance Salem-News.com

But it is bad news for newspapers and TV stations that rely on Associated Press stories for content. Their work will be nixed from Google under the new program.

Last week's announcement from Google that they will no longer carry newspaper and TV station stories that originated with The Associated Press and other news agencies is good news for us, because with few exceptions, we originate 100% of our own material.
