Karl Rove to Leave Bush White House

A White House spokeswoman confirmed the resignation, describing it as a "big loss".

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Karl Rove, the man credited by many with winning George W. Bush the last two US presidential elections, has resigned effective August 31st.

Rove, the president's deputy chief of staff, said he would leave his role to spend more time with his family.

Both Rove and the president are expected to speak before boarding Marine One at the White House at 11:35 a.m. ET.

Concern in Oregon Over Equine Herpes Virus Prompts Informational Seminar

OSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine will hold a free public informational seminar on Equine Herpes Virus-1 on Wednesday, Aug. 15th, in Magruder Hall Room 102 beginning at 7:00 PM.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - A horse suspected of having a highly contagious respiratory virus called Equine Herpes Virus-1 was treated at the Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Oregon State University and though results of the tests were inconclusive, numerous Oregon horse owners have called OSU seeking more information.

State Veterinarian Don Hansen issued a recent alert urging caution by horse owners after five horses in Washington also exhibited clinical signs consistent with the virus.

Serious Crash Injured Three Near Molalla

Oregon State Police troopers from the Portland Area Command office are continuing the investigation.

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - A Stayton-area woman was seriously injured Sunday morning when the motorcycle she was riding on was struck by a passenger car on Highway 213 about three miles south of Highway 211 junction. Two other people, including her husband who was operating the motorcycle, were injured.

Police say Sunday at approximately 11:30 AM, a 1979 Volkswagon Jetta driven by 22-year old Jennifer L. Hughes of Oregon City, was southbound on Highway 213 near milepost 20 following a pickup.

Merv Griffin Dies at 82 From Prostate Cancer

Merv Griffin was initially diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1996. He made good progress against the cancer but then his condition declined rapidly, and by Friday he was reported to be in grave condition.

(LOS ANGELES, Ca.) - Merv Griffin, a true pioneer in the television industry, passed away Sunday morning lengthy battle with prostate cancer. He was 82.

Friends say he impacted almost every corner of TV programming for decades. If he wasn't in front of a crowd, he was behind the camera or behind the scenes, credited with shaping the television world.

Fire Explodes Through Salem Home Killing Occupant

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem firefighters were called out to a report of an explosion early this morning at 3:17 AM, at 2200 Lancaster Drive SE in Salem. The resident has since passed away from his injuries.

Fire Department Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says that when firefighters arrived on scene, the structure was fully involved with fire coming out of the majority of the structure.

West Nile Virus Case Confirmed in Lane County

Public health officials are reminding the community to protect themselves from mosquito bites and to clear mosquito breeding sources from their property

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - Lane County Environmental Health confirmed a case of West Nile Virus in Lane County.

A bird collected from Springfield on Monday, Aug. 6th tested positive for the virus.

The Oregon Department of Human Services reported 73 human cases of West Nile virus in Oregon last year.

Demand to Alberto Gonzales Seeks Relief for Marine and Soldier

Advocates say they are well armed with documentation, they are demanding that the top U.S. law office investigate and prosecute the case.

(SALEM, Ore.) - A letter dispatched to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales seeks criminal prosecution for interference in the court martials of Marine Sergeant Lawrence Hutchins, III and Army Ranger Staff Sergeant Raymond Girouard.

The complaints alleges "military outlawry" and suggests that only a public demand and disclosure of relevant facts will bring relief to two American fighting men who were charged with murder in a war zone.

No Sign of Utah Miners From Second Drilling

Officials say the miners could potentially hold out for weeks in an underground chamber, providing they survived the initial collapse.

(HUNTINGTON, Utah) - Media sources are reporting that a second hole drilled in the area where six miners remain missing in Utah yielded no sign of the missing men.

The men have been trapped since Monday in the Crandall Canyon Mine near Huntington, Utah.

Rescue crews were hoping that they would have heard or seen a sign of the missing men by now.
