Salem Police to Participate in Seatbelt Safety Campaign

In 2006, Salem officers issued 1,318 citations to drivers and passengers not using their seatbelts.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Salem Police Department will be participating in the "3-Flags" seatbelt safety campaign running from May 25th through June 3rd, with the goal of reducing the number of traffic related injuries and deaths through both education and enforcement of seatbelt laws.

In 2004, 341 people were killed in Oregon, with 36% of those people not using any safety restraints.

In Salem, nine vehicle occupants lost their lives in seven crashes in 2005.

Senate Passes Bill Protecting Customers from Outrageous Check Cashing Fees

House Bill 2202 will now move to the Governor’s desk for his signature.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Oregon Senate Friday passed House Bill 2202, legislation that sets limits on fees for the check-cashing industry in Oregon.

The bill will protect people who use the services from unreasonable rates, require business to obtain a license to operate and ensure that fees are clearly visible for customers.

Currently, 32 states regulate check-cashing businesses.

Oregon Tire Icon Les Schwab Has Died

Les Schwab often said, “There are three types of people in the world: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who ask what happened.” Les Schwab was a man who made things happen.

(PRINEVILLE, Ore.) - After many months of declining health, Les Schwab died today in Prineville, Oregon. He was 89.

After starting his company in 1952, he built Les Schwab Tire Centers into one of Oregon’s best-known businesses.

“Les was not just a great businessman, he was a great man,” said Phil Wick, Chairman of Les Schwab Tire Centers. “There will never be another Les. He was a visionary, and all of us who worked with him will stay true to his vision of integrity, service and treating people right.”

Les Schwab is both the chain of tires stores based in Prineville, Oregon and the name of the man who founded the company in 1952.

Canadian Snowbird Pilot Dead After Crash in Montana

The plane flown by the Snowbirds is the Canadair CT-114 Tutor, they are part of the Canadian Air Force.

(MALMSTROM, Mont. ) - Officials at an airshow in Malmstrom, Montana say a Canadian Forces "Snowbird" pilot crashed his jet into the ground during rehearsals for two air shows scheduled for this weekend.

CTV Newsnet says the pilot has not yet been identified. A spokesman for the 15 Wing "Moose Jaw" told reporters that all pilots flying on Friday are veterans of the team.
The plane flown by the Snowbirds is the Canadair CT-114 Tutor, they are part of the Canadian Air Force. The jets have a top speed of 750 kilometers per hour with their signature smoke tanks attached, and weigh 7,170 pounds.

Eugene to Get 14.8 Million for Emerald Express Expansion

The extension will serve an anticipated 3,700 daily passengers when it is scheduled to open in 2010.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - Eugene will receive $14.8 million in funding one-year ahead of schedule for the Emerald Express expansion, Oregon Senators Gordon Smith and Ron Wyden said Friday.

The Senators are top proponents for funding the project, which will create a new hybrid-electric bus line between Eugene and Springfield.

The Pioneer Parkway Emerald EmX BRT project is a proposed 7.8-mile, $37 million extension of the Franklin Corridor BRT, which runs between Eugene and Springfield.

Oregon School for the Blind, Oregon School for the Deaf to Share Campus

The move would take place after the 2008-2009 school year.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo announced Friday that after two years of study by the Department of Education and hundreds of hours of meetings with stakeholders on what would be best for students, she has decided that the Oregon School for the Blind and the Oregon School for the Deaf should be co-located on the OSD campus in Salem.

“It is my decision to move the Oregon School for the Blind to the OSD campus with the objective of building a strong new OSB facility, bringing operational costs down by reducing duplication and improving both school operations,” Castillo said.

(FLORENCE, Ore. ) - Deputies from the Lane County Sheriffs Office Traffic Safety Team in cooperation with the Oregon State Police and the Florence Police Department will be conducting a saturation patrol of Western Lane County this weekend.

Deputies, Troopers and Officers will be conducting this patrol due to the increase in traffic on Western Lane County roads due to the Rhododendron Festival.

The patrols will focus on Minors In possession of alcohol, DUII, Open Container Violations, Speeding, Following Too Close, Driving Uninsured, Failure to use safety belts and other traffic safety violations.

Alan Bates May Take Gordon Smith on for 2008 Senate

Bates, 62, who served in Vietnam from 1965 to 1967, said recently that the war in Iraq is "unwinnable," as was the Vietnam War.

(SALEM, Ore.) - State Sen. Alan Bates says he is "seriously considering" running against U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith in 2008.

Speaking to his hometown paper, Bates, a physician and Democrat, said that health care is the “biggest crisis” facing the nation.

"In the last eight years, with Republicans in control of the House and Senate and the presidency, nothing happened on health-care reform," Bates told The Ashland Daily Tidings.
