Five Mountain Climbers Stranded on Mt. Hood

The group of five, depending on their needs and weather conditions, may have to spend the remainder of the night in their self-prepared snow cave.

(Mt. Hood, Ore.) - Members of The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) Search and Rescue (SAR) Unit have responded to assist 5 mountain climbers on Mount Hood.

A CCSO Search and Rescue coordinator has started rescue procedures in response to these 5 climbers caught in a snow storm, with described whiteout conditions on Mount Hood.

The Day of Our Mothers

In 1915 Mother’s Day became an official holiday. The second Sunday in May became the day we pay homage to the one that gave birth to us.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Recently, while preparing to move to another apartment, I came across a letter I had written to my mother in May 1991 while living in Fairbanks, Alaska. She resided in Mill City, Oregon, with my stepfather. While re-reading this letter, I realized just how tenuous life is and that even mothers are not around forever, as mine succumbed to cancer on January 8th, 1998. There is not a day goes by that I don’t think about her and at times start to reach for the phone to call and talk with her.

I want to share my letter with you as I think that it could apply to almost any mother, especially those who have been faced with many life difficulties and challenges.

New Postage Rates Begin Monday

Mailers will have the opportunity to obtain lower prices if they find ways to configure the mail into shapes that reduce handling costs for the Postal Service.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - New postage prices and fees go into effect on Monday, including an increase in the price of a First-Class Mail stamp to 41 cents. But not all prices are going up.

Starting Monday, the price to mail a two-ounce First-Class Mail letter (wedding invitations sometimes weigh two ounces) will drop from the current 63 cents to 58 cents.

Under a new pricing strategy, as mailpieces become heavier, the prices do not increase as much.

Child Welfare Bill To Protect Families Passes House

“Under this bill DHS cannot charge a family like this for child support if they’ve completed an assessment and found the allegations against the parents are unfounded,” State Representative Jerry Krummel

(SALEM, Ore.) - “House Bill 2553 prevents the state from punishing parents who have done nothing wrong except try to protect and provide for their children,” said State Representative Jerry Krummel (R-Wilsonville) on the House Floor today as he presented the measure. HB 2553 was adopted 54-0 with 6 members excused.

The bill prohibits the state from collecting money from families to pay back the cost of foster care if the Department of Human Services determines “the report of abuse is unfounded.”

First State Veterans and War Memorial Grants Approved

A $19,500 grant will help the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War replace a bronze statue of a Union soldier atop a monument in the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in southwest Portland.

(ALBANY, Ore. ) - Oregon's first Veterans and War Memorial Grants will help develop a memorial in an Albany park and replace a Civil War statue in a Portland cemetery.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission approved the state Lottery-funded grants at a commission meeting Thursday in Albany.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department will release $21,960 to the Veterans of the 20th Century organization, which applied for a grant to support the new veterans memorial in Albany's Timber Linn Park.

(SALEM, Ore.) - A rally for homeless youth will be held May 14th at the state capitol in Salem. Organizers say the rally represents the momentum of a movement in Oregon to recognize and meet the needs of runaway and homeless youth.

Jean Lasater with the Oregon Homeless and Runaway Youth Coalition, says that every year, thousands of older children and youth find themselves doubled up with friends, in shelters and on the streets.

Driver Killed During Police Chase North of Lincoln City (UPDATE)

The driver has been identified as 26-year old Michael Aaron Geisler.

(LINCOLN CITY, Ore.) - Oregon State Police troopers are investigating a single vehicle fatal traffic crash that occurred early Saturday morning while a vehicle was allegedly attempting to elude Lincoln City police and an OSP trooper north from the Lincoln City area.

The fleeing vehicle was found after it crashed into a tree along Little Nestucca River Road in Tillamook County.

Salem Hospital Official Honored with IT Executive of the Year Award for Oregon
