Children Playing with Lighter Start Grass Fire on Oregon Coast

Because they are age, 6 and 9, the children are not subject to criminal penalties for starting the fire.

(WALDPORT, Ore. ) - Two juveniles are lucky not to be facing stiffer charges today, after they started a grass fire over the weekend near a Waldport, Oregon home.

On Saturday, at about 5:35 PM, firefighters from the Central Coast Fire Rescue responded to a fire in the beach grass on the bay near the end of NW Keady Street.

The fire was heading for a home in the area, and was within 50 feet of the home.

Salem Public Library Hosting Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Training

The training is titled “Recognizing Child Molesters - A New Approach to Protecting Children”.

(SALEM) - Many girls and boys will be sexually abused prior to their 18th birthday.

The offenders will typically be someone they already know - perhaps a relative, friend, neighbor or one of the many volunteers and professionals who come in contact with them every day.

The Salem-Keizer School District is hosting a sex abuse prevention training on Tuesday to help parents keep their children safe from becoming a victim of sexual abuse.

Damaged Alaskan Cruise Ship has Troubled Past

Empress of the North also ran aground in March 2006 on the Columbia River, 20 miles east of Portland, Oregon, with 260 passengers and crew aboard.

(JUNEAU, Alaska) - The Ambassadors International Inc. cruise ship that ran into trouble today off the coast of Alaska, forcing passengers and crew to evacuate, has had troubles before.

The 360-foot ship hit a rock and began taking on water about 50 miles (80 kilometers) off the coast of Juneau in 3-foot seas.

Forty workers and 208 passengers were shuttled back to Juneau with the help of a U.S. Coast Guard cutter and other vessels, including a state ferry.

Marion County Sheriff Recovering from Quadruple Bypass Surgery

(SALEM) - On Saturday, May 12th, Marion County Sheriff Raul Ramirez underwent quadruple bypass surgery at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland.

The surgery went well and he is recovering.

Doctors say recovery is likely to take several weeks.

Porn sites are screened by the Department of Defense, but the latest move by the military remove a soldier's access to Myspace, YOUTUBE, and other sites Monday strikes many as an unnecessary discipline that will only lead to a plunge in morale.

A spokesperson for the DoD says the department's computer systems are being used more often for personal surfing, decreasing Internet availability and presenting security risks.

All Assets Engaged to Find U.S. Soldiers Missing in Iraq

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - All available assets are being engaged to find three missing U.S. soldiers who apparently were captured by enemy forces during a May 12th ambush near Mahmoudiya, Iraq, a senior U.S. military officer told reporters yesterday at a Baghdad news conference.

Aircraft, intelligence units and thousands of U.S. troops have been scouring an area about 20 miles south of Baghdad where the attack occurred, Army Maj. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV, Multinational Force Iraq spokesman, told reporters.

Coast Guard Rescues Passengers from Damaged Cruise Ship

The 299 foot cruise ship Empress of the North ran aground 49 miles west of Juneau this morning.

(JUNEAU, Alaska ) - The Coast Guard has successfully facilitated the evacuation of all 248 passengers from the Empress of the North and will be transferring them to the Alaska Marine Highway ferry vessel Columbia for transit back to Juneau.

Hair Dryer Starts Fire in Apartment

The fire was determined to have been started by an electric hair dryer and caused approximately $13,000 smoke and fire damage to the apartment.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem Fire Department responded to a call for smoke in a four-story apartment complex Sunday just after 5:00 PM, at 2020 Center St. NE, #46.

Salem Fire Spokesperson Chris Riffle says firefighters arrived to a two-story apartment complex and found light smoke coming from the doorway of an upstairs apartment.

UPDATE Lost Mt. Hood Climbers Found by Clackamas County Sheriff`s Search and Rescue Unit

The most recent information provided by the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Search and Rescue coordinator on Mount Hood continues to be very encouraging.

(MT. HOOD, Ore.) - At 11:30pm, the 5 lost climbers were found and safely brought back to the Timberline Lodge. Efforts by Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Unit and the Portland Mountain Rescue made for quick and safe rescue of the five men. All five hikers are reported to be in good condition with no injuries. There were no injuries to rescuers during the search efforts.

Through the use of GPS coordinates and a mountain locator unit search efforts were swift and resulted in the rescue of the hikers quicker than anticipated. A snow cat was used to safely retrieve and transport the hikers off the mountain.
