House Committee Hears Hours of Impassioned Testimony on Basic Fairness Legislation

(PORTLAND) - The U.S. Postal Service urges customers to avoid Tuesday, April 17th, deadline-day crowds by mailing their income tax returns early and ensuring each envelope carries the proper postage.

For those who decide to wait until the deadline date, Post Offices in the Portland metropolitan area will collect and postmark tax returns until midnight on Tuesday, April 17th, 2007, from blue Postal Service collection boxes in front of 21 designated Post Offices, Stations and Branches.

Smoke Causes Evacuation of Middle School in Keizer

(KEIZER, Ore.) - The Keizer Fire District responded to the report of a fire alarm sounding early Monday morning at Claggett Creek Middle School at 1810 Alder Drive NE.

Upon arriving they found smoke in the backstage area of the school. While reroute to the location, firefighters were notified that school officials reported seeing smoke in the building.

North Clackamas Dropout Rate Falls to New Low

This year's district dropout rate is close to the district's record low of 3.1 percent in 2002-2003, down from a high point of 6.57 percent in 1995-1996.

(MILWAUKIE, Ore.) - The dropout rate in North Clackamas Schools fell to a new low of 3.2 percent for the 2005-06 academic year, according to data from the Oregon Department of Education. This is down from 3.8 percent in 2004-05

Figures dropped significantly at all three high schools, with Clackamas High now at 1.3 percent, Putnam High at 1.5 percent, and Milwaukie High at 3.9 percent. All three were below the state average of 4.1 percent.

Suspects Flee Scene of Burglary Attempt in Gervais

Investigators are still sorting out exactly what happened.

(GERVAIS, Ore.) - Marion County deputies were called to the Last Chance Saloon at 12157 Portland Rd NE just before 9:30 this morning on a report of a possible burglary in progress.

Sheriff's Office Spokesman Kevin Rau says that because this business is just outside the city limits of Gervais, a Gervais Officer responded while Deputies were enroute.

(MAROBE PROVINCE, New Guinea) - The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of ten U.S. servicemen, missing in action from World War II, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

In late 2001, the U.S. Embassy in Papua New Guinea notified the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command that wreckage of a World War II bomber had been found in Morobe Province. Early the next year, a JPAC team surveyed the site and found aircraft wreckage and remains.
