Deputy Police Chief Promoted in Salem

He has served in a number of capacities during his time at Salem PD.

(SALEM) - Lieutenant Steven Bellshaw has been promoted to Deputy Chief of Salem Police. Police Chief Gerald Moore promoted Steve after a selection process that included 21 applicants from law enforcement agencies across the country.

Steve is a 17 year veteran of Salem Police Department, hired July 5th, 1989. Steve's assignments as an officer have included Patrol officer and a Detective assignment where he investigated sex crimes and homicides.

Wyden’s Talks with Reid, Baucus and Bingaman Yield Multi-Year County Payments Fix

Multi-year renewal includes nearly $5 billion for rural schools and communities nationwide.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) joined U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) today in announcing a multi-year proposal to restore funding for the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act, commonly known as the county payments law.

The proposal—which includes about $5 billion for rural schools, counties and communities through 2012—is being offered for bipartisan consideration by Reid, Wyden and U.S. Senators Max Baucus (D-MT) and Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), the respective chairmen of the U.S. Senate Committees on Finance and Energy and Natural Resources.

West Coast Average Gasoline Prices Continue to Lead Nation

Oregon average up another 5 cents; national up less than a penny and a half.

(SALEM) - Average gasoline prices on the West Coast remain the highest in the nation. Currently, the national average price for a gallon of regular is $2.56. That same gallon of fuel averages $2.93 for the three West Coast states. In Salem, drivers are paying an average of $2.827, while Portland motorists are seeing a slightly better price, $2.821.

Vancouver, Wa. prices come in slightly behind Portland, with an average cost of $2.853 for a gallon of regular.

Be Aware! Van Buren Bridge in Corvallis Closed at Night for Repairs

The project is scheduled to be competed in mid-November.

(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - The Oregon Department of Transportation has begun its scheduled closing of the Van Buren Avenue Bridge in Corvallis.

ODOT will close the bridge from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, Monday through Friday until mid-April.

During the nighttime hours, Van Buren Street traffic will be detoured to Second Street and over the Harrison Street Bridge, which will be converted to two-way traffic while the repairs are taking place.

Jurassic Crocodile Surfaces from the Blue Mountains in Eastern Oregon

The remains of the crocodile, believed to be from the species Thalattosuchia and member of the Metriorhynchids group, now belong to the state.

(EUGENE) - An ancient sea-going crocodile has surfaced from the rocks of Crook County in eastern Oregon.

Its discovery by the North American Research Group, whose members were digging for Jurassic-age mollusks known as ammonites, is another confirmation that the Blue Mountains consist of rocks that traveled from somewhere in the Far East, says retired University of Oregon geologist William Orr, who was called in to examine the find for the state.

The remains – about 50 percent of a 6 to 8-foot reptile, including long, needlepoint teeth – were found imbedded in Jurassic rock on private property in the Snowshoe Formation of the Izee Terrane south of Dayville, Ore.

Oregon DEQ to List Salem/Keizer Area as Meeting Air Quality Standards for Carbon Monoxide

(SALEM) - The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is proposing that the Environmental Quality Commission change the status of the Salem-Keizer Carbon Monoxide area from nonattainment (i.e., not in compliance) to a state maintenance area (in compliance).

The proposal includes adoption of a Salem-Keizer Limited Maintenance Plan which demonstrates how the area will stay within the required CO limits for at least the next ten years and guarantees that past reductions of emissions from motor vehicles will be maintained.

Food for Fines Week Coming to Salem Public Library

Food items will be accepted at the Central Library, West Salem Branch, and on the Bookmobile.

(SALEM) - For one week only, Salem Public Library will forgive fines for patrons who bring in donations of non-perishable food items between Sunday, March 25th and Saturday, March 31st.

This highly successful program pays off for library patrons and for families served by Marion-Polk Food Share.

The 2006 Food for Fines program generated 6,100 pounds in donations. Fines totaling $3,993 were cleared on 576 library cards.

Milwaukie Man Wins $182.7 Million Powerball® Jackpot

When asked about his future plans, the winner said travel was at the top of the list.

(SALEM) - One sleepless night after learning he was holding the winning $182.7 million Powerball® jackpot ticket, Daniel Gannon of Milwaukie claimed his prize today at the Lottery office in Salem.

Gannon, 60, matched all five numbers and the power ball number in Saturday's multi-state Powerball lottery game to win the $182.7 million jackpot.

Gannon purchased the ticket at the Safeway on SE McLoughlin in Milwaukie on Friday.
