Oregon`s Second WWII Veteran to Receive French Legion of Honor Medal

Napoleon Bonaparte established the Legion of Honor medal in 1802 to reward both soldiers and civilians for exceptional merit or bravery.

(PORTLAND) - France's highest military honor will be presented to Bob Weiss, a World War II combat veteran on Saturday.

He served in the 230th Field Artillery Battalion of the 30th Infantry Division in the liberation of France, the Battle of the Bulge and the fight across Belgium, Holland and Germany.

As a young second lieutenant and a field artillery forward observer, Weiss was trapped with the 2nd Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment when the Germans launched their biggest counterattack in France during the Battle of Mortain in southern Normandy.

Marine Killed in Iraq is Newport, Oregon Graduate

A community memorial service and celebration of life will be held from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM Thursday in the Boone Center at Newport High School.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - The Newport News Times reports that 20-year old Nathan Windsor of Newport, a lance corporal in the United States Marine Corps, was killed in action Saturday during a military operation in Iraq.

Nathan Windsor is a 2005 graduate of Newport High School.

It is reported that he was shot while serving as a sniper during a military "surge" offensive.

Federal and State Authorities Dismantle Alleged Oregon Drug Trafficking Network

The DEA says the criminal organization directed the importation of the illicit drugs from Mexico and then arranged for its transportation and eventual distribution in Oregon and elsewhere.

(SEATTLE) - Dozens of people were arrested today by the Drug Enforcement Administration in what is described as a sophisticated drug trafficking network.

The arrests took place after an eight month investigation which culminated in the service of numerous federal search and arrest warrants in and around the Eugene, Oregon area.

NASA Astronauts to Speak at OMSI March 28th

Ever wonder what it's like in outer space? Or how hard it is to train to become an astronaut? And just how does a person eat in zero gravity?

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry welcomes astronauts Mark L. Polansky and Robert L. Curbeam, Jr. to a special speaking engagement in OMSI's auditorium Wednesday, March 28th at 10:00 AM.

With a combined total of 1,829 hours in space, Astronauts Polansky and Curbeam =will discuss their space travel experiences and answer questions from the audience.

"We are pleased that the Rotary Club of Portland is bringing astronauts Polansky and Curbeam to OMSI and to Portland," said Mindy Clark, OMSI Senior Vice President for Organizational Advancement.

Western Snowy Plover Nesting Season Begins Along Southern Oregon Coast

Approximately 18 miles of beach in Oregon are affected by plover recovery efforts.

(FLORENCE, Ore.) - The nesting season for the western snowy plover begins on southern Oregon coast beaches Thursday.

During this time some beaches have access restrictions in place to help protect nests and birds with young.

After March 15th, ropes and posts will be used to protect snowy plover nests, eggs and chicks, and restrict access to dry sand portions of certain beaches.

Dry-sand protection efforts will be in effect for habitat sites at Sutton Beach, Siltcoos Estuary, Oregon Dunes Overlook, Tahkenitch Estuary, Tenmile Estuary (northern Coos County), the North Spit of Coos Bay; Bandon Beach State Natural Area and New River area beaches.

Local Pool Supporters Organize Benefit for Salem Kroc Center

The event is planned for the morning of April 14th, and will take place at all Courthouse Athletic Club facilities that include swimming pools.

(SALEM) - Spurred by the recent plea for financial support that benefits the Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center’s swimming pool, two members of the group supporting competitive aquatics have announced a fundraising event scheduled for mid-April.

The benefit, entitled “The Million Dollar $wim”, was the brainchild of a local teacher, Burt Kanner.

The Courthouse clubs are donating the pool time to help the Million Dollar $wim add to the needed operating endowment funds necessary to fund the proposed pool’s expenses.

Robin E. Baker Named 12th President of George Fox University

Board promotes current provost, a historian with a decade of experience in higher education administration.

(NEWBERG) - George Fox University Provost Robin E. Baker, who has overseen a dramatic expansion of academic programs at the university since 1999, will be the institution’s next president, effective July 1st.

Baker, 49, was selected over the weekend by the George Fox Board of Trustees, which met on the Newberg campus for its annual spring meetings.

During his eight years, Baker has overseen the addition of six new undergraduate programs (engineering, political science, art, philosophy, nursing, and theater) and five graduate programs (doctor of ministry, doctor of management, MBA executive track, master in school counseling, and master in school psychology).

Report: Disease Opened Door to Invading Species in California, Pacific Northwest

About 50,000 exotic species have been introduced into the United States.

(CORVALLIS) - Plant and animal diseases can play a major and poorly appreciated role in allowing the invasion of exotic species, which in turn often threatens biodiversity, ecological function and the world economy, researchers say in a new report.

In particular, a plant pathogen appears to have opened the gate for the successful invasion of non-native grasses into much of California.

The study, published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, should improve the understanding of invasive species and possibly suggest new tools to combat them, said researchers at Oregon State University.

Senate Passes Expansion of Oregon Prescription Drug Program
