Op-Ed: Tobacco Company Disagrees With Harvard Report

Philip Morris company's response to the "Cigarette Tax Buys Back A Healthy Future for Oregon Kids, Eases Pain For Those-Addicted" Op-Ed that ran on Salem-News.com in February.

(RICHMOND, Va.) - The recent report by Harvard University that concluded Philip Morris USA and other tobacco companies have deliberately increased the amount of nicotine that smokers get from cigarettes over the past seven years, if true, raises legitimate public and scientific concerns.

News of this report has increased the volume of those voices that favor regulation of cigarettes by the federal Food and Drug Administration. Philip Morris USA continues to support the legislation introduced in 2005 to grant the FDA authority over the product including the regulation of tar and nicotine.

Poll: Seven in Ten Oregonians Believe State Government has Enough Money

Poll also finds ‘wasteful spending’ as most serious problem in state government.

(SALEM) - House Republicans Monday released a Jan. 23rd Moore Information poll showing a strong majority of Oregonians remain strongly opposed to raising taxes.

The poll was released as the Oregon Legislature considers tax increases, mostly on small businesses.

In the statewide survey of 500 Oregonians, 68 percent of respondents said they believed state government has the money it needs, it just needs to spend it more wisely.

Chicken Breasts Recalled Nationwide due to Possible Listeria Contamination

Two brands are affected by the recall.

(ATLANTA) - Kraft Foods has issued a voluntary recall for 52,650 lbs. of fully cooked chicken breasts strips with rib meat that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The front of each package has the establishment number "P-19676" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The back of each package has a "Use By" date of 19 April 2007. The code "19 APR 2007" appears on each case.

The company produced the chicken strips for Oscar Meyer and is marketed in 6 oz. packages as "Oscar Meyer/ Louis Rich Chicken Breast Strips with Rib Meat, Grilled, Fully Cooked - Ready to Eat."

Perilous Rescue on Mount Hood Ends for Rescued Climbers

Two of the rescued three are reported to be attending a reunion of the complete climbing party at Timberline Lodge.

(MOUNT HOOD) - 4:30 PM Update The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office reports the three climbers have been safely removed from the peril and turmoil that threatened their lives on Mount Hood.

One of the three climbers, whose name is being withheld until family notifications have been completed, has been transported to Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital, in Portland.

Suspect Sought in Salem Armed Robbery

The suspect is described as white, 5’8, average build, with brown hair.

(SALEM) - The Marion County Sheriff’s office is asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect who robbed a Salem tavern Monday afternoon.

Sgt. Jeff Wheeler says at approximately 11:30 AM, a lone suspect entered the Free Loader Tavern located at 501 Lancaster Dr NE, through a backdoor, approached the bartender, brandished a weapon, and demanded money.

After retrieving an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect left the tavern via the rear door and ran towards Meadowlawn Drive SE, Wheeler said.

Climbers Provided Warmth for Final Journey Down Oregon`s Mount Hood

The climbers are part of a party of 8 that required rescue on the mountain last night.

(GOVERNMENT CAMP) - 11:45 AM Update The Clackamas County Sheriff's Search and Rescue personnel indicate the 3 climbers are being warmed with hot liquids and dry clothing.

When this warming and hydrating session is complete; the attending rescue personnel will assist the climbers down the mountain. It is anticipated this return will require about three addtional hours to complete the rescue.

Bon Appetit Food Services at Willamette University opens a Japanese-themed dining hall today in the new Kaneko Commons residential facility on the east side of campus.

(SALEM) - The new Kaneko Café at Willamette University is meant to educate the community about Japanese culture.

Climbers Found on Mount Hood: All is Well

As of 11:00 AM, rescuers report that the 3 climbers have been found and are in good condition.

(MOUNT HOOD) - The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office is proud to announce that the search teams on the mountain have located and are with the 3 missing climbers at this time.

This early report indicates all is well with these rescued climbers and these rescue personnel will be assisting the 3 patients off the mountain as soon as
possible.

Harsh Weather on Mount Hood Hampering Search Efforts for 3 Stranded Climbers

The climbers, two women and a man, along with a dog, spent the night on Mt. Hood, cold and wet, but alive.

(GOVERNMENT CAMP) - Rescue efforts for the 3 climbers continue feverishly on Mount Hood.

Pinpointing the exact location of these climbers in White River Canyon of Mount Hood has been challenging; although, SAR personnel feel confident they have identified the precise location of the missing climbers.

Rescue personnel 'triangulated' on the MLU beacon signal which has been most beneficial in attempting to locate these climbers in the present white out and heavy snow conditions.
