99 Cited During Salem 3 Flags Safety Campaign

Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for children over the age of 4 in the United States.

(SALEM) - On Wednesday, the Salem Police Department teamed up with the Marion County Sheriff's office to enforce traffic violations at pre-determined locations with the city limits of Salem.

The main focus was on seatbelt violations along with other observed violations.

Oregon House Speaker Merkley Presses Healthy Kids Bill

The Revenue Committee approved the Healthy Kids bill by a 6-3 vote.

(SALEM) - House Speaker Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) testified Wednesday before the House Revenue Committee in support of House Bill 2201, the Healthy Kids bill.

The Healthy Kids bill would provide the 117,000 children in Oregon who do not have health insurance with coverage.

Merkley told the committee that House leaders from both parties had spent hours in negotiations over the last 10 days trying to find agreement on the disputed parts of the bill.

Oregon Department of Transportation Overtime Grant Funds Means Extra Patrols on Highway 99E

There are currently 13 state highway safety corridors in Oregon.

(SALEM) - The Oregon State Police have again been awarded grant funds to provide extra enforcement in the Highway 99E Safety Corridor between Salem and Woodburn.

It's one of six safety corridors around the state selected by the Oregon Department of Transportation for the grant money which helps law enforcement agencies pay overtime for dedicated traffic enforcement in these areas.

OSP received grant funding to work 299 overtime hours during 2007 in the Highway 99E Safety Corridor.

Salem Man Arrested in Keizer Samurai Sword Attack

Keizer police have been looking for the samurai sword stabbing assailant since last summer.

(SALEM) - A Salem man has been arrested in connection to an attack that involved a samurai sword that injured a Keizer man last year.

The attack occurred July 4th, at about 2:00 AM, when 26-year old Jason Maghan was involved in a fight at a bar in Salem and was returning to his residence in the 6600 block of Amy Lane NE in Keizer.

Police Officers in Tualatin Help Contain Two Dangerous Dogs

(TUALATIN) - Police Officers in Tualatin helped contain two dangerous dogs that destroyed a domestic cat earlier today.

Tualatin Police were called the area on a report of two large dogs destroying a cat.

When Officer Nate Cooper arrived, he located the two dogs who were still with the cat, which was deceased.

Salem Downtown Association Has Been Dissolved

Reduction of funding has ceased the operation of the Salem Downtown Association after 35 years.

(SALEM) - The Board of Directors of the Salem Downtown Association voted February 7th to dissolve the organization and support the creation of a new Downtown Business Improvement District.

Efforts to Keep Oregon Kids From Getting Cavities Get a Boost

Governor Kulongoski's budget calls for sealing the teeth of 50 percent of all 8-year-olds by 2010.

(SALEM) - Efforts to protect Oregon's children from getting cavities are getting a boost this month as the state expands its capacity to deliver preventive sealants.

The help comes in the form of two portable dental sealant units that will supplement the school-based sealant program administered by the Oregon Department of Human Services Public Health Division.

Grand Jury Increases Charges Against Oregon Father who Used Stun Gun on Infant Son

Police say the toddler was attacked as many as ten times.

(ALBANY, Ore.) - The Albany man who allegedly used a 100,000 volt stun-gun device on his 18-month-old son will face stiffer charges, and is now out of jail.

A grand jury has returned an indictment charging 23-year-old Rian James Wittman with two counts each of first-and second-degree assault, all of which are Measure 11 crimes. Wittman posted bail on Monday.

Study Finds Men who Haven`t Been Victims Less Likely to Believe Child Sex Abuse Claims

UO study finds level of sexism feeds a man's denial.

(EUGENE) - A University of Oregon study has found that young men who have never been traumatized are the least likely population to believe a person's recounting of child sexual abuse.

The study - published in the March issue of the journal Psychology of Women Quarterly - also finds that males with highly sexist beliefs also tend to believe that such incidents, if they happened at all, were not harmful to the victim.
