Oregon Supreme Court Upholds Longo Death Sentence

Longo is one of 33 men on death row in Oregon.

(SALEM) - The Oregon Supreme Court Thursday upheld the death sentence of Christian Longo, the man that killed his wife and three children on the Oregon coast.

The 32-year-old was sentenced in 2003 to death by lethal injection for killing his wife, MaryJane Longo, and their children, 4-year-old Zachery, 3-year-old Sadie and 2-year-old Madison.

He dumped their bodies into coastal waters in 2001, and fled the area.

Longo was located in Cancun, Mexico, but when the FBI got there he had already fled. They later found him in Tulum, Mexico courting a German woman.

Health Advisories Issued For Water Contact at Six Coastal Locations

Although state officials discourage water contact, they continue to encourage other recreational activities on these beaches because they pose no health risk even during an advisory.

(NEWPORT) - Public health advisories were issued Thursday due to higher-than-normal levels of bacteria in ocean waters at six beaches: Agate and Nye beaches in Lincoln County, Florence North Jetty beach in Lane County, Umpqua beach in Douglas County, and Bastendorff and Sunset Bay State Park beaches in Coos County.

Increased pathogen and fecal bacteria levels in waterways are common after heavy rain events, when runoff can wash pollutants into streams and rivers, and sanitary sewers may overflow.

Salem Burned Body Suspect Arraigned

The body of 20-year-old June Inez “Candy” Kell was found by police burning under the 13th Street bridge in August.

(SALEM) - Twenty-six year-old Philip Michael Florek, a convicted sex offender, was arraigned Thursday morning on murder, abuse of a corpse and failure to register as a sex offender charges.

Florek was arrested in September for the death of 20-year-old June Inez "Candy" Kell.

Salvation Army Responding to Tillamook-Area Floods

The Tillamook Family Services building, located at 2105 4th Street, sustained damage during the storm.

(TILLAMOOK) - The Salvation Army has emergency canteens and personnel standing by for deployment in response to the biggest flood crisis in the Tillamook area since 1996.

Roughly 50 families have been displaced and are receiving help from neighbors and local bed and breakfast establishments.

Cars, mobile homes, and buildings have sustained significant damage, with some mobile homes being swept away. One dairy farmer and his family, stranded by the water, watched helplessly as their heifers succumbed to the floodwaters.

Farmers from around the area are already responding, helping to round up the remaining cattle. A neighbor in a motor boat has rescued the family who will be sheltered by local Salvation Army personnel.

Oregon State Hospital Patient Sought by Police

Ziemlak was admitted to the hospital from Lane County on Sept. 14th, 2004, after being found guilty of murder except for insanity.

(SALEM) - State and local police agencies have been notified that a 23-year-old Oregon State Hospital forensic patient fled from hospital staff late Wednesday afternoon while on an approved pass.

Hospital officials said Thaddeus W. Ziemlak ran at about 4:45 PM while he and a staff member were visiting a store in the 2200 block of Lancaster Drive N.E. in Salem.

Democratic Principles Prevail This Time - What’s Next?

(SALEM) - Anyone really surprised?

The election, this time, despite all the foreign-money attack- ad furor and fantasy thrown wholesale at confused voters caught in their own concentrated economic considerations, went well for rational, reasonable decision; with democratic open, honest dialog helping to capture that consequence.


But there remains the imponderable danger that one time, sometime, whenever; with whatever further-means modified from dollar-bought decisions, that may not be the outcome.

Will that, then, be the start of the coming Second American Revolution -- or the end of the same??

That makes some situations within that context, NOW, surely that much more meaningful, even if in negative read-out --as for the role of the media in this one.

(SALEM) - No more Republican rule, the Democrats seized control of both houses of Congress Tuesday by capitalizing on voter anger over Iraq and frustration with the Bush administration overall. Recent congressional scandals also rocked the Republican boat, which didn’t right itself, as the turbulent waters just seemed to increase.

Expected to be the first female speaker in history, Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California may not be everyone’s favorite politician, but she has been a strong leader for many years, and is solidly in place to set the mode for change.

Local Red Cross Volunteer Deployed to Floods in Washington

"...I do like the idea of helping people – so that’s why I am going.”

(SALEM) - American Red Cross volunteer Dan Androes of Monmouth is preparing for a three week assignment in Bellingham, Washington.

Androes will be working in a Red Cross warehouse used to stock shelters and to provide people with items they will need to respond to severe flooding and the clean-up effort once flood waters reced.

Androes has been a Disaster Service volunteer with the Willamette Chapter of the American Red Cross for over two years. In 2004 he reposnded to Huricanes Charles and Frances and was in Ft. Pierce, Florida when Hurricane Gene made landfall.

Five Arrested in Canby Gang Fight

One of the gang members was also the victim of last weeks drive by shooting that occurred at his apartment on S Knott Street in Canby.

(CANBY) - Canby police responded to the report of a gang fight in the area of SE 2nd Ave and S Juniper Street in Canby yesterday at 3:40 PM.

Upon arrival, officers were confronted by five gang members, four Surenos and one Norteno.

Three of the Surenos broke glass bottles in front of one of the officers and were holding the broken glass in their hands.
