(SALEM) - US Senator Ron Wyden, Congresswoman Darlene Hooley, and former Governor Barbara Roberts will rally Marion and Polk County supporters to cheer on Paul Evans in his race for Senate this Saturday, October 28th at 7:00 PM at Salem Heights Community Hall at 3505 Liberty Road South, Salem.

Evans, a Democrat, is in a hotly contested battle for Oregon's 10th Senate District, against Republican Jackie Winters. The campaign rally will follow Paul's last major canvass of the election season before he reports for duty Saturday, November 4th.

Oregon State Police Could Break Record For High Speed Traffic Citations

A preliminary six-month review of OSP enforcement statistics indicates Oregon is on track this year to easily stop and cite more drivers at speeds 100 mph and faster.

(SALEM) - Two high speed traffic stops last week are reflective of what Oregon State Police troopers continue to see -- drivers traveling at dangerous speeds on freeways and secondary highways.

On October 15th, OSP Trooper Jess Elzy stopped a 1999 Toyota Corolla driven by 19-year-old Michael Mitchell, from Gresham, westbound on Highway 26 approaching Gresham at 117 mph.

On October 17th, OSP Senior Trooper Ken Andrus stopped a motorcycle operated by 38-year-old Cintia Schutt, from Vancouver, Washington, westbound on Interstate 84 near Corbett at 132 mph.

Oregon to Test All Newborns For Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that causes thick, sticky fluid to build up in the lungs and in the pancreas. It can lead to malnutrition and severe growth problems. As the child grows older, respiratory infections and other problems increase and become more severe, affecting lung function.

(SALEM) - Beginning next month, cystic fibrosis will be added to the panel of diseases that every Oregon baby is tested for under the state's newborn screening program.

"Until now, 80 to 85 percent of children with cystic fibrosis have gone undiagnosed for months or years in Oregon," said Michael Skeels, Ph.D., director of the State Public Health Laboratory in the Oregon Department of Human Services. "Starting next month, that's changing -- and it offers a brighter future for these children."

Woman Receives Minor Injuries in Deer Attack Near Woodburn

Police and state wildlife officials are reminding the public to keep deer and other wildlife wild – do not approach or feed wild animals.

(WOODBURN) - An Aurora-area woman was injured Thursday morning in an unusual incident in which she was attacked by a deer while retrieving mail along Highway 214 near Woodburn. The woman was treated and released at a local hospital.

The deer has not been located.

At approximately 9:30 AM, 58-year-old Annie Saunders, from Aurora, was at work at Sunwest Spas located at 13201 Highway 214 near Woodburn.

Bush Signs New Border Fence Into Law

Critics call it is a reincarnation of the Iron Curtain, Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, and The Great Wall of China.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - A 700-mile long fence along the Mexican border was approved today at the nation's capitol. The President says the wall will help to deter illegal immigration from the countries south of the United States.

Bush signed the bill into law at a White House ceremony. He says the planned barrier will be a double fence with a strip in the middle where border guards can patrol.

The high-tech wall will include surveillance cameras, infrared sensors, satellites and ground radar.

Oregon State Researchers Discover World’s Oldest Bee

Researchers say the finding is key to learning more about the evolution of flowering plants.

(CORVALLIS) - Researchers at Oregon State University have discovered the oldest bee ever known, a 100-million-year-old specimen preserved in almost lifelike form in amber and an important link to help explain the rapid expansion of flowering plants during that distant period. The species, named Melittosphex burmensis, is long extinct. The findings and their evolutionary significance are outlined in an article to be published this week in the journal Science.

Oregon Lottery Makes Record $167.7 Million Transfer to State

The transfer raises the total amount of lottery revenue transferred to the state to $4.96 billion.

(SALEM) - With the Oregon Lottery's record-setting $1 billion sales for fiscal year 2006 already in the books, fiscal year 2007 is off to a good start.

The lottery's $167.7 million transfer to the Economic Development Fund for the first quarter of fiscal year 2007 ending September 30th, 2006, was its highest ever.

"Our business plan for the current fiscal year was developed to continue the successes we enjoyed in fiscal year 2006," said Oregon Lottery Commission Chair Steve Ungar. "More importantly, record lottery transfers provide added revenue to projects and programs throughout Oregon."
