Salem Police Department Open House

Salem-area businesses will be on hand with displays and information on crime prevention topics and services.

(SALEM) - The Salem Police Department is having its 3rd Annual Open House on Saturday, September 16th at Riverfront Park.

The Open House is an opportunity for the community to discover the many services and resources of their local law enforcement agency.

The event will also be an opportunity to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the department’s proven crime prevention program, Neighborhood Watch.

(WOODBURN) - Woodburn Police arrested five individuals riding in a boxcar on a train headed toward Woodburn around 1:45 AM Wednesday morning.

(CARVER) - An Oregon State Police trooper investigating a minor traffic crash over the holiday weekend discovered that an 18-year old man at the scene was wanted on multiple sex-related offenses related to a Portland Police Bureau Family Services Division Sex Abuse investigation.

State Police Trooper Aaron Jackson responded to investigate a minor two-vehicle traffic crash on Highway 224 at S.E. Marna Road September 2nd at 4:40 PM.

Corban Library, Bookstore Evacuated Due to Smoke

Firefighters said it appears that there was an electrical malfunction inside an electrical room.

(SALEM) - Fire crews were called out to Corban College on a report of a structure fire located at a campus building Tuesday.

Salem firefighters rolling up on the scene reported smoke inside the library/bookstore, at 5000 Deerpark Drive SE. The call came in just after 3:30 PM Tuesday.

All power was out to this building when firefighters made entry.

Firefighters determined the smoke was coming from an electrical room, where an apparent electrical malfunction had occurred.

Governor Unveils Plan to Strengthen Public Schools, Higher Ed

‘Education Enterprise’ will stabilize school funding, restore lost programs the Governor said.

(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski Tuesday issued the details of his "Education Enterprise," a blueprint for reducing class sizes, restoring lost academic programs, and expanding access to higher education for Oregon students.

"My Education Enterprise Plan will reduce class sizes and provide Oregon students access to a quality education, so they have the tools to succeed," the Governor told a gathering of school officials, teachers, and community leaders outside Stephens Middle School in Salem.

New Women’s Residence Hall Opens at Corban College

The unofficial figure for current student enrollment is roughly 900, a 5 percent increase over last year.

(SALEM) - Corban College students arriving “on the hill” were greeted by a changed skyline that now includes a brand-new Northwest-style women’s residence hall.

The $3.5 million as-yet-unnamed hall is the newest building in a series of recent construction projects. Like the others, it was added to serve a growing student body.

(SALEM) - An increasing numbers of gang members in Salem means graffiti problems are on the rise according to local police.

Citizens are frustrated, and local officials say it is important to get the message out about city and county rules designed to reduce the problem, rules that apply to anyone whose property is hit with graffiti.

(SALEM) - Oregonians lavish loving care on their children. Even our “childless-O’s” show practical concern for kids of relatives, friends, and their neighbors.

That’s an Oregon proclivity possible only while parents retain personal good health. Without health care there’s no further chance for economic ability beyond mere survival.

Many now know more than 613,000 Oregonians lack health care coverage; 113,000 Oregon children are UN-covered, often preventing educational activities; and more than 67,000 Oregon kids are eligible but NOT enrolled in publicly-funded health programs.
