Drug Cops Bust Nine in NE Salem

"A Lot of These People Hang out Together"

(SALEM) - Nine people were arrested out of a Salem home Monday on drug charges as well as for various other crimes. Salem Police Lt. Bill Kohlmeyer says it began when officers with the Drug Activity Response Team investigated a report of possible drug activity at 1509 5th St. NE.

Kohlmeyer says only one of the nine lived at that address, underlining a humorous comment made by one of Salem's retired detectives said a long time ago "a lot of these people hang out together".

Police say that after approaching the home, a suspect named Grant Herring provided false information about other people at the location on 5th St NE. At that point, another person at the home, Lance Tupper, was recognized by police from past contacts.

Oregon Guard Launches From Salem to Search for Missing Female Hiker

A female hiker in the Roseburg area has been missing for over 48-hours.

(SALEM) - The 1042nd Medical Air Ambulance Company - Army National Guard dispatched an OH-58 helicopter at approximately 2:00 PM Thursday afternoon.

A Guard spokesman says the crew is on a search and rescue mission, six miles east of Roseburg, for a missing 25-year-old female hiker.

Sources report that she has been missing for 48 hours now, and her condition is unknown.

Assistance Now Being Distributed to Oregon`s Fisheries

Oregon's Governor announces relief for Oregon's salmon fisheries.

(SALEM) - Applications for qualified fishers to receive state financial assistance are now being distributed to more than 900 troll salmon permit holders along the Oregon coast.

This is part of an effort to assist those impacted by restrictions on this summer's salmon harvest. Governor Kulongoski directed $500,000 of his Strategic Reserve to help assist Oregon's commercial troll salmon fleet.

"I am proud of the state agencies who have responded so aggressively to help fishers displaced by the federal closure," said Governor Kulongoski. "While I know this won't solve all of the financial difficulties, I hope this will provide some assistance to fishers and their families as we continue to secure more permanent federal aid."

Oregon Atomic Veteran`s Day Celebration July 16th in Albany Oregon

July 16th also marks the first anniversary of a legislatively approved date to honor Oregon's Atomic Veterans--military members who participated in atmospheric nuclear weapons tests in the United States, the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans during and after World War II.

(ALBANY) - Members of Oregon's Atomic Veterans organization will be hosting a ceremony and celebration in Albany, Sunday, July 16th, to remember Atomic Veterans Day.

All military Veterans and their families are invited to attend the celebration being held at the Linn County Fairgrounds and Expo Center, between noon and 4:00 PM.

Guest speakers during a ceremony that begins at 1:00 PM will include State Senator Ted Ferrioli, State Representatives Donna Nelson and Jeff Kropf, and Jim Willis, the Director of the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs.

American Idol Auditions Coming to Seattle’s Key Arena

Salem-area singers who want a shot at becoming the next American Idol superstar won’t have to travel to far for a chance to impress Randy, Paula, and Simon.

(SEATTLE) - American Idol begins its search for the next singing superstar and will host auditions in 7 cities across the country starting in August.

Auditions for the sixth edition of American Idol begin in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Aug. 8th, at a location to be named shortly. And raps up Tuesday, September 8th, at Seattle’s Key Arena.

Men and women 16 to 28 years old on Aug. 6th, 2006, and eligible to work in the United States are welcome to audition.

Oregon Relocated Merci Train Boxcar to be Dedicated

(SALEM) - Oregon's Merci Train boxcar has been on display at Fort Stevens State Park near Warrenton for more than 35 years. The symbol of France's gratitude to America now has a new home at the Coos County Historical and Maritime Museum,
located in North Bend.

A ceremony to dedicate the boxcar will be held at the museum on Saturday, July 15th, beginning at 2:00 PM. The dedication is part of the festivities of the annual North Bend Jubilee.

Boxcars from the French "Merci Train" were given as gifts from the people of France to thank America for its help during and immediately following World War II. The cars were called 40 and 8 because in World War I they could carry either 40 men or eight horses to the war front.

Experts say precautions are necessary to ensure safety, one of the primary things is for people to wash hands after any contact with animals.

(SALEM) - Oregon’s county fair season kicks-off this week, and state officials are taking precautions to protect animals and the public from Avian Influenza.

With Avian Flu affecting other parts of the world, and fears that it may soon spread to the U.S., the Oregon Department of Agricultures key safety concept for county fairs this summer is bio-security.

State Veterinarian Dr. Don Hansen says ODA will be asking exhibitors for permission to examine poultry.

Lebanon Invaded by Israel Following Capture of 2 Soldiers

Hezbollah is now holding three captured Israeli soldiers, raising tension and also raising the stakes in a game both countries have played before.

(JERUSALEM) - Following the capture Tuesday of two more Israeli soldiers, Israel launched a major military offensive, sending armored forces into southern Lebanon in response to a border raid by the militant group Hezbollah that killed at least seven soldiers in addition to those who were abducted.

Israel's army is still expanding its two-week-old operations in the Gaza Strip, seeking the return of a soldier captured by Palestinian militants inside Israel on June 25th. The new attack equates to Israel now having a second front against Lebanon.

The New York Times reports that more tthan 20 Palestinians were killed in Gaza Tuesday, most in airstrikes and many of them civilians, according to Palestinian medical officials.

Alesia Walker says the man who killed Phillip Gillins is walking around scot-free while her son, wrongly convicted, sits behind bars.

(EUGENE) - The mother of 23-year old Darrell Sky Walker says her son was wrongly convicted of manslaughter in the death of 22-year-old college student Phillip Gillins in June 2005. Alesia Walker of Riverside, California, says her son was wrongly convicted in Lane County by a system that failed to turn up key witnesses who could have cleared him.
