Files of 2,200 Oregonians May Have Been Released Through Illicit Net Surfing

(SALEM – AP) - Electronic files containing personal data of up to 2,200 Oregon taxpayers may have been compromised by an ex-employee's unauthorized use of a computer, the Oregon Department of Revenue said Tuesday.

Three Venture Capital And Private Equity Firms Commit Money to Oregon Investment Fund

(SALEM) - The Oregon Investment Fund built on its funding momentum this week by announcing three recent commitments to venture capital and private equity firms from the West.
The trio of recent investments pushes the $105 million fund halfway to full investment.

The three funds receiving investment from the OIF are:

• Wedbush Capital Partners, a lower middle-market private equity firm based in Los Angeles and with four offices in Oregon
• Burrill Life Sciences Fund III, an early stage life sciences venture capital firm based in San Francisco
• Voyager Capital Fund III, a technology venture firm based in Seattle

Team of Experts Coming to Salem to Study Boise Property

As part of this study, ULI is also exploring options for relocating Boise's existing paper converting operation currently on that property

(SALEM) - The City of Salem, the Strategic Economic Development Corp., and Boise have invited the Urban Land Institute to Salem to consider the redevelopment of Boise's downtown Salem property.

ULI has assembled a volunteer Advisory Services Panel from their membership to visit Salem June 26 through June 30, 2006 to evaluate and make recommendations on the potential reuse of Boise's 310.4 acres on Minto-Brown Island and their 12.87 acre downtown site and buildings.

According to Salem Mayor Janet Taylor "the thrust of the advisory service panel effort is to generate a road map to retain the valuable Boise jobs and to put the existing Boise properties to a higher and better use benefiting the greater Salem area."

Three Burglars Arrested by Salem Police

Police say a quick response led to the arrest of three alleged burglars, two of which were juveniles. Investigators discovered more than $5,000 worth of stolen clothing and jewelry in the area.

(SALEM) - Shortly after 1:00 AM, Salem Police responded to an alarm at Meier & Frank, 400 High St NE.

Officers observed a subject inside the building, maintained an outer perimeter, and began searching the store. Two suspects were apprehended when they fled into the attached parking garage.

A third suspect attempted to elude police by walking on top of the skybridge to Salem Center, crossed the roof of Salem Center, and then tried to jump down by Mervyn's loading dock, injuring himself slightly.

Houck Students Are Able to go to New York City

(SALEM AP) - Seventeen students and ten parents from Salems Houck Middle School have exceeded their goal and raised about 20-thousand dollars for their drama trip to New York City.

Last week the group learned the company handling their arrangements went bankrupt and all of their hard earned 35-thousand dollars was gone.

Fundraising carwashes by the students and help from the Salem community and across the country have made the trip still possible.

The trip includes visits to New York historic sites; four Broadway shows and they will attend some acting classes.

Baghdad Crackdown Begins; 4 Die in Blast

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - A car bomb killed four people and clashes broke out in two Sunni Arab strongholds Wednesday after tens of thousands of Iraqi troops fanned out across Baghdad in a major security crackdown aimed at ending the violence that has devastated the capital.

Cars backed up throughout the city of 6 million at checkpoints behind coils of barbed wire as Iraqi police and soldiers searched vehicles and secured roads into and out of the capital.

Barely more than six hours after visiting Baghdad, President Bush said violence in Iraq will never be eliminated but that the crackdown and new intelligence on terrorism are contributing to "steady progress."

Thousands of Soldiers Deployed in Baghdad

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - Iraq's prime minister launched the biggest security crackdown in Baghdad since the U.S.-led invasion, with tens of thousands of security forces deploying throughout the capital on Wednesday and increased checkpoints causing some traffic jams.

An Iraqi army official, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to release the information, said two divisions had been deployed in the capital, which would be about 20,000 soldiers, along with some 50,000 Interior Ministry forces.

The operation, which army officials said was dubbed Operation Forward Together, came as radical anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr planned a demonstration Wednesday in Baghdad to protest President Bush's surprise visit to the capital.

Security officials said Tuesday that 75,000 Iraqi and multinational forces would be deployed throughout Baghdad, securing roads in and out of the city, establishing more checkpoints, launching raids against insurgent hideouts and calling in airstrikes if necessary.
