Giants Land in Salem

(SALEM) - Ever heard of the Memphis Belle? How about the Lady Be Good? They sound like girls who have exemplary manners.

The Memphis Belle is a Boeing B-17 that along with her crew was the first `Flying Fortress` to complete her required 25 bombing missions in Europe.

The Lady be Good was a B-24 `Liberator` bomber that crashed in the Libyan Desert on the way back from a bombing mission in Italy in 1943.

Now local residents have a unique chance to see a B-17 and a B-24 up close this week at Salem`s McNary Field.

U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq Reach 2,500

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - American deaths since the invasion of Iraq have reached 2,500, the Pentagon said Thursday, marking a grim milestone in the wake of recent events that President Bush hopes will reverse the war's unpopularity at home.

The latest death was announced as Congress was launching a symbolic election-year debate over the war, with Republicans rallying against calls by some Democrats to set a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops.

The Pentagon provided no details on the nature of the 2,500th death. Nevertheless, reaching the new marker underscored the continuing violence in Iraq just after an upbeat Bush returned from a surprise visit to Baghdad determined that the tide was beginning to turn.

"It's a number," White House press secretary Tony Snow told reporters at the White House.

(SALEM) - The Salem Fire Department is offering the following tips to keep you and your family Safe & Sound this summer.

Supervision – Make sure your child is properly supervised this summer. This will help them make the right choices since they have extra time on their hands.

Escape Drills in Your Home – Make sure your family has a fire escape drill.

Seconds count when a fire occurs. If your entire family has a plan and practices that plan every month it could save you and your families lifes.

Smoke Detectors – Make sure you have working smoke detectors in each bedroom and in the hallways and at least one on every story. Salem Fire Department will install a free smoke detector in the home for any family in the Salem Fire Department response area who cannot afford one.

Radio Disney Bringing Entertainment, Games, Prizes to Marion County Fair

(SALEM) - Radio Disney will bring performances from "High School Musical," games, stories and the Lightning McQueen car from the movie `CARS` to the Marion County Fair on Saturday, July 15th.

From noon to 3:00 PM, there will be lots of entertainment and activity for youngsters.

RD Frequency will give two performances from "High School Musical." There will be games to play, and Reading with Radio Disney will include stories such as "Lilo & Stitch," "101 Dalmatians" and "Pocahontas."

Health Advisory Issued For Three Coastal Beaches

(LINCOLN CITY) - Public health advisories were issued Wednesday due to higher-than-normal levels of bacteria in ocean waters at three locations -- near the storm water outfall at the Ecola Court beach access point at Cannon Beach in Clatsop County, Rockaway Beach in Tillamook County and D River State Park Beach in Lincoln County.

Water samples indicate higher-than-normal levels of fecal bacteria, which can result in gastroenteritis, skin rashes, upper respiratory infections and other illnesses. Direct contact with the water should be avoided until the advisories are lifted, especially for children and the elderly, who may be more vulnerable to waterborne bacteria.

OSP Trooper and Salem Police Officers Recognized for Lifesaving Efforts

(SALEM) - Last February, a woman's life was saved by the quick reactions of three Salem Police officers and an Oregon State Police trooper who assisted her after she was struck by a car. On Wednesday, those actions were rewarded during a ceremony in Salem.

Oregon State Police Superintendent Ronald C. Ruecker and Salem Police Chief Jerry Moore presented awards to those four police officers whose actions were instrumental in saving the woman's live. She attended the presentation to personally thank the officers who helped her.

On February 4th, 2006, at approximately 5:59 PM, Oregon State Police Trooper Jason Perrizo overheard a Salem police officer radio for an ambulance to respond to an auto / pedestrian collision at the intersection of Portland Road and Hyacinth.

Backyard Burning Ban Starts June 16th in Linn and Benton Counties

(CORVALLIS) - The annual backyard burn ban in Linn and Benton counties goes into effect Friday, June 16th. From that date through Sept. 30th, all open burning of yard waste and other debris is prohibited. Historically, escaped debris burns caused numerous wildfires in the area. Initiation of the ban 14 years ago has significantly reduced these human-caused fires.

Tour B-17, B-24 Wednesday Through Friday at McNary Field

(SALEM) - Tour two pieces of aviation history this week at Salem`s McNary Field.

The Wings of Freedom Tour, which features WWII era aircraft, will touch down in Salem on Wednesday.

Those attending will be able to tour a B-17 Flying Fortress and a B-24 Liberator.

Tours on Wednesday will begin sometime between 2:00 and 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM.

At 5:00 PM, flights aboard the two bombers will begin.
