Old Buildings at Fairgrounds will be Used for Fire Training

(SALEM) - This week, Salem fire fighters will burn three food booths at the Oregon State Fair Grounds. These buidlings have exceeded their original 20-year lifespan and would cost upwards of a million dollars to fully repair, according to fair officials.

Rand Breitbach of Salem Fire Training, says the Salem firefighters will be performing training fires on these buildings Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between the hours of 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

Work Set to Begin on Pudding River Bridges

The affected bridges are on the Mount Angel-Gervais Road.

(MOUNT ANGEL) - Work is scheduled to begin on the Pudding River Bridges Replacement Project on Mount Angel-Gervais Road and is expected to continue through October 2006, according to the Marion County Department of Public Works.

That work is scheduled to begin with the closure of Mount Angel-Gervais Road at the Pudding River Bridge on Monday May 15th, 2006.

Fire Evacuates Sprague High School

Nobody was injured in the Monday morning fire that investigators say was intentionally lit.

(SALEM) - A fire led to the evacuation of Salem's Sprague High School Monday morning. Fire Department Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says Salem firefighters responded to the commercial fire at 2373 Kuebler Road South just before 10:00 AM.

The first alarm brought 3 Engines, 1 Ladder Truck, and a Battalion Chief according to Holmstrom. The first arriving fire fighters discovered a small fire in the boy's bathroom.

Attorney General Files Lawsuit Against Tobacco Companies

In a payment due on April 17, state received only $66.3 million of an expected $75 million annual payment.

(SALEM) - Attorney General Hardy Myers on Monday sued tobacco companies over the disposition of nearly $15 million in payments due to Oregon under the terms of the historic Master Settlement Agreement.

The MSA was signed by 46 states in 1998. Included in the lawsuit are the "big three" tobacco companies, Philip Morris, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and Lorillard, as well as over 25 other cigarette manufacturers.

Police Canine Captures Suspect in Creek

(STAYTON) - A Stayton police dog and his handler apprehended a stolen car suspect after a brief chase Sunday night.

Stayton police spokesman Stg. Rich Sebens says officer Brandon Hamilton attempted to stop a car driving without tail lights just before 9:00 PM, when the driver sped away.

After a short chase through several neighborhood street, the driver fled on foot and into a creek.

Investigators Say Child With Lighter Caused $200K in Damage to Salem Home

(SALEM) - A fire that investigators say was started by a small child caused a fire to sweep through portions of a south Salem house Sunday, leaving more than $200,000 of damage in its wake but no injuries.

Salem Fire Spokesman Joe Parrott says crews were called out at 2:33 Sunday afternoon to a house fire at 2473 Crestmont Circle S.

The fire was reported to have started in the bedroom closet. A 15-year old girl and a 5-year old girl were home at the time. The girl`s mother, Magda Gabr, was at work but arrived home quickly after learning about the fire.

Volunteers Sought to Help Clean-up Willamette River in Salem

The theme for this year's event is "Down by the Riverside."
