Author Victor Villasenor to Speak, Sign Books at Salem Public Library

Villasenor "Burro Genius," the first book of a planned second trilogy, was released in July 2004, is a national bestseller, and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

(SALEM) - Victor Villaseñor persisted through 265 rejections of his first novel, Macho!, before it was finally sold. He persisted and proved 265 publishers wrong as he inspired comparisons to "the best of Steinbeck" and went on to more than a dozen novels, collections of short stories, children's books, and non-fiction books.

He will talk about his life and his work in a special appearance at 7:00 PM Wednesday, May 3rd in Loucks Auditorium at Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty St. SE.

His talk will be followed by a book signing. Books will be available for sale at the event.

Tragic Mishap on Bike Claims Life of Salem Boy

(SALEM) - Police report that a young Salem boy who received serious head injuries in a bicycle crash Thursday, died after being transported to Salem Hospital.

Salem Police Lt. Dan Deitz says eight-year old Ryan Johnson was riding on the sidewalk in front of his home when he fell from the bicycle, striking his head on a concrete retaining wall, which is adjacent to the sidewalk.

Ryan's father, Raymond Johnson, was outside watching his son ride when the tragic accident occured, Deitz said.

Merkley Statement on Legislative Special Session

(SALEM) - House Democratic Leader Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) released the following statement today on the successful special session of the 73rd Oregon Legislative Assembly:

Albany Credit Union Robbed Friday

The suspect was last seen walking east on SE 7th Ave.

(ALBANY) - Albany police are asking for the public`s help in locating and identifying a suspect that robbed the Albany Northwest Community Credit Union located at 707 S.E. Waverly Drive on Friday.

Albany police spokesman Capt. Eric Carter says officers were dispatched to the bank just before 11:30 AM.

The investigation revealed that a lone suspect entered the credit union and displayed a demand note to a teller...

Two South Salem Gas Stations Robbed Thursday Morning

The robberies occurred in a span of about 10 minutes.

(SALEM) - Salem police need your help in locating and identifying suspects involved in two south Salem gas station robberies Thursday morning.

The suspect(s) stole the outdoor cash register at the Chevron gas station at 4310 Commercial St. SE around 4:30 AM.

About 10 minutes later, police received another call that someone attempted to take the outdoor register at the Safeway gas station at 5660 Commercial St SE.

Police Release Results From I-5 Saturation Patrol

Seven officers from various agencies cooperated with ODOT in an effort to slow traffic to legal speeds, particularly in construction areas.

(SALEM) - A police traffic saturation patrol in Salem Tuesday resulted in 49 traffic citations and 15 warnings. Officers maintained a high profile, and no crashes were reported during the patrol

Seven motor officers from Oregon State Police, Marion County Sheriff's Office, Salem Police Department, and Keizer Police Department conducted the interagency saturation between 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, on a seven-mile stretch of Interstate 5 between Market Street and the Sunnyside/Turner interchange.

They say they focused the saturation in an area where ODOT is conducting a major bridge and highway construction project on Interstate 5 through southeast Salem.

Detectives Seize Drugs and Take Child Into Protective Custody

(SALEM) - A two-week investigation into the alleged illegal sale of marijuana and prescription drugs led to a number of arrests in Salem Wednesday. Salem Police say members of the Department`s Community Response Team served a narcotics related Search Warrant at 239 Myers Street South #12.

In addition to the arrests of three adults and one 17-year old, a two-year old child was removed from the residence on Myers Street South and placed in temporary protective custody.

Salem Police Department Hosting Monthly Conversations With The Hispanic Community

This month come and learn about the department’s bomb squad.

(SALEM) - The Salem Police Department is holding its monthly community conversation program to increase the communication between the Hispanic community and law enforcement officials in the Salem community.

The program is conducted in Spanish and also serves as a way to have increased understanding about services and department procedures.

The topic for the April conversation will be about the department`s bomb squad.

Oregon State Parks Take Part in Earth Day Celebration

Special events are scheduled at Champoeg State Heritage Area, Silver Falls State Park and Tryon Creek State Natural Area in the Willamette Valley and Portland area; at parks in the Columbia River Gorge; at the Valley of the Rogue State Park near Grants Pass in southern Oregon, and at Smith Rock State Park in central Oregon.

(SALEM) - The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department has forged partnerships with park and earth-friendly Oregon businesses, organizations and government agencies in several regions of the state to celebrate Earth Day on Saturday.

Salem Audubon Society members will be at Silver Falls State Park, 26 miles east of Salem, to show how birds recycle natural material to build their nests. They will also help visitors to the South Falls Lodge build their own bird nesting boxes while park staff and the Friends of Silver Falls answer questions about healthy environmental practices and lead a nature walk. The event begins at 11:00 AM.

Independent Study Finds Forestry Successfully Implementing Forest Plans

(SALEM) - A recent independent study found that the Oregon Department of Forestry is successfully implementing its forest management plans for state forestland in northwest and southwest Oregon.

The study was conducted by Strategic Resource Systems, a nationally recognized firm from St. Johns, Michigan. The report will be presented April 27th to the Oregon Board of Forestry, which approved these management plans in 2001 for about 634,000 acres of state forestlands.

Among the findings, the study found that by using structure-based management, ODF is moving the primarily "middle-aged" forests toward a mixture of habitats, including complex forest stands which are similar to old-growth.
