Two Small Devices Detonate in Oregon Town

The bomb squad reported the device was made from chemicals that are available at most department stores, and would detonate when they combined.

Search For Well Known Writer has Deadly Ending

(SEATTLE, Wash. ) - Karen Sykes The three-day search for a well-known outdoors writer who went missing while hiking on Mount Rainier took a grim turn Saturday, when a body was discovered in rough terrain off the trail where she was last seen.

The body has not been officially identified to be that of 70-year-old Karen Sykes, an author who penned the “Hike of the Week” column for the former Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

One Dead, Five Rescued After Boat Capsizes on Columbia River

The crew of the Teresa D reported rescuing five people from the water, but that a sixth person was still missing.

(WARRENTON, Ore.) - U.S. Coast Guard Oregon A Good Samaritan and Coast Guard crews rescue five people and recover one person from a capsized boat on the Columbia River Bar, Friday.

Coast Guard Sector Columbia River watch standers received a call, at 9:19 a.m., from the crew of the 27-foot vessel Teresa D, stating that they had witnessed a 25-foot aluminum guide boat capsize on the Columbia River Bar with people in the water and that they were trying to rescue survivors.

The scientific poll was conducted on March 11 of this year and included participation from a sample size of 474 registered voters throughout Salem.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Rock Band Phish In an effort to make a challenging curriculum more accessible and engaging for students, a professor at Oregon State University will teach a philosophy course on the band Phish this summer.

Stephanie Jenkins, an assistant professor of philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts at OSU, plans to explore the relationship between philosophy, music and social change with her students in a course she has dubbed “Philosophy School of Phish.”

Militants Kill 30 Iraqi Troops; Seize Iraq-Syria Border Crossing

The capture of the Qaim border crossing deals a further blow to prime minister Nouri al-Maliki's government.

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - Islamic State of Iraq Troops Sunni militants have seized an Iraqi crossing on the border with Syria after a daylong battle in which they killed some 30 Iraqi troops, security officials said on Saturday.

Police and army officials said the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and allied militants seized the crossing near the border town of Qaim, about 200 miles west of Baghdad, after battling Iraqi troops all day Friday.
