NCAA Tournament: Florida Wins Second Straight National Championship

Corey Brewer was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.

(ATLANTA) - gators win photoThe University of Florida men’s basketball team capped another magical season Monday night, this time with an 84-75 victory over Ohio State at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta to claim the national title for the second-straight year.

With the victory, the Gators became the first team since 1991 and 1992 to repeat as champions (Duke).

Oregon Begins Spring Football Workouts Tuesday

Dennis Dixon will begin the spring atop the team’s chart at quarterback.

(EUGENE) - oregon coach photoOregon kicks off its 13th spring under the direction of head coach Mike Bellotti when it holds its first of 15 spring practices Tuesday.

Fifty-one returning lettermen and 14 starters will be among more than 90 players expected to be on hand as the Ducks look to improve on last year’s 7-6 record that ended with losses in their last four games.

Head coach Mike Bellotti has tabbed his team’s linebacker corps as well as the lack of depth at tight end as the areas of greatest concern heading into spring camp.

NASCAR: Johnson Edges Gordon to Win Goody's Cool Orange 500

The top seven finishers all drove Chevys.

(MARTINSVILLE, VA) - nascar photoTeammates Jimmy Johnson and Jeff Gordon duked it out over the final 18 laps of the Goody's Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway Sunday afternoon, with Johnson holding on for a .065-second win.

Gordon slammed Johnson's rear bumper in the third and fourth turns on the final lap, pulled halfway alongside his teammate before the two slammed together. Both kept their Chevrolets under control and Johnson edged ahead for the win.

Denny Hamlin, who started on the pole and led 125 laps, finished third with Kyle Busch fourth.

NWC Softball: Willamette - PLU Split NWC Doubleheader

Molly Barnes led Willamette with a total of five hits during the doubleheader.

(TACOMA, Wash.) - willamette photo k_hWillamette University and Pacific Lutheran University split a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday, as the Bearcats won the first game 8-0 on the run rule in five innings and the Lutes claimed the second game, 4-3, in nine innings.

Willamette ended the day at 13-8 overall, 7-5 in the NWC. Pacific Lutheran went to 11-6 overall and to 5-5 in the NWC.

In the first game, Willamette pitcher Nikki Franchi allowed just two hits in five innings and Geneva Hale belted two home runs, as the Bearcats pulled away from the Lutes for the run-rule win.

NWC Baseball: Bruins Betrayed by Wildness in Third Loss to Lutes

Brett Brunner (4-2) got the win despite giving up four runs and 12 hits in 7 1/3 innings.

(TACOMA, Wash. ) - gf logoAn inability to throw strikes - the cardinal sin in pitching - proved costly to George Fox University Sunday afternoon here at the PLU Diamond as five Bruin hurlers walked six batters, hit six more, and seven of them scored in a 10-4 loss to the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes in the third game of a critical Northwest Conference baseball series.

The Lutes wrapped up a three-game series sweep – only the second time in 12 years that a Pat Bailey-coached George Fox team has been swept in conference play – to take a significant lead in the conference race.

PLU, 21-6 overall, is 10-2 in league play, while the five-time defending conference champion Bruins, who are 19-4 overall and ranked 5th in the nation, are in second at 11-4.

NWC Baseball: Willamette Rallies for 8-4 Win Over UPS

Summers throws final seven innings to improve to 4-2.

(TACOMA, Wash. ) - wu baseball khWillamette University scored three runs in the second inning and four runs in the fifth inning, as the Bearcats overcame an early 2-0 deficit to defeat the University of Puget Sound, 8-4, in the third game of their Northwest Conference weekend series.

WU evened its overall record at 12-12, while improving to 7-8 in the NWC. Puget Sound fell to 10-13-1 on the season, 9-6 in the NWC.

Right-handed pitcher Jarrid Summers struck out six batters and allowed just two runs, while pitching the final seven innings for Willamette.

NWC Baseball: Ellis Grand Slam Highlights Linfield Win

McCollum picked up the win, allowing just two hits and a run in 3 1/3 innings of work.

(McMINNVILLE) - linfield baseball photoCory Ellis hit a fifth-inning grand slam that knocked in the decisive runs in Linfield’s 10-6 victory over Lewis & Clark on Sunday that completed a three-game sweep for the Wildcats at Roy Helser Field.

Ellis, who for the second game in a row hit a ball over the left field fence, emptied the bases to lift the Wildcats to a 8-5 lead after the team had fallen behind 5-2.

The third win of the weekend improved Linfield’s outlook in the Northwest Conference. The Wildcats are 13-10 overall, 8-4 in NWC play.

Pac-10 Baseball: Arizona Sweeps No. 2 Oregon State

Oregon State righthander Daniel Turpen suffered the first loss of his career after 10 victories.

(TUCSON, Ariz.) - osu player photoOregon State rallied for six runs in the top of the ninth inning but the second-ranked Beavers fell to 25th-ranked Arizona 17-14 in Pac-10 baseball Sunday afternoon at Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium.

The Beavers (23-6 overall, 0-3 Pac-10) outhit the Wildcats (25-6, 3-0) by an 18-16 margin but Arizona won its 12th straight game.

On Sunday, OSU had one of its most productive offensive games of the season but came up empty in some key situations that might have allowed the Beavers to keep pace with the Wildcats.

Pac-10 Softball: 11th Ranked Stanford Deals Oregon First Loss at Home

A three-run bomb kept the Ducks in the game.

(EUGENE) - oregon player photoNo. 11 Stanford was relentless at the plate on Sunday afternoon, hitting five home runs and ending the game in the sixth inning with a 15-4 victory over 13th-ranked Oregon.

The loss was the Ducks (36-4, 2-1 Pac-10) first at Howe Field this season, and also ended the team’s 15-game winning streak.

After being shut out in an 8-0 loss to Oregon on Saturday, the Cardinal had no problems at the plate on Sunday, and in the first inning, loaded the bases with three consecutive singles.
