Salem-News.com Sports (June 14, 2006 22:54)Oregon State Rankns No. 19 in Sports Illustrated All-Sports Rankings for Spring Salem-News.com(CORVALLIS) - Oregon State University is ranked No. 19 on the Sports Illustrated All-Sports rankings for the spring season. Led by the Beaver softball and baseball World Series teams, OSU captured 58.5 points in the standings.
The All-Sports Rankings order is calculated by taking the Top 25 in all spring sports and awarding points based on standings (a No. 1 ranking gets 25 points, a No. 25 gets one point, etc.). Baseball and softball are given a little more weight (a No. 1 ranking gets 37.5 points, a No. 25 gets 1.5).
Other highlights from Oregon State`s spring sport season included the women`s golf program competing in the NCAA West Regional and the men`s crew team racing in the IRA Championships. Read Full Article

(MONMOUTH) - Former Western Oregon standout pitcher Nick Waechter has signed with the New York Mets and has been assigned to the Brooklyn Cyclones of the Class A short-season New York-Penn League.
Waechter and the Cyclones will open the season on June 20 with a home contest against the Staten Island Yankees. The junior was a 23rd round pick of the Mets in last week`s major league draft.
The right-hander, who led the Wolves to a 40-16 record and sixth straight conference championship, was also selected this year as the west region pitcher of the year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Read Full Article

Croatia had other ideas.
Kaka scored in the 44th minute Tuesday night, but Croatia made the Brazilians work for every bit of the 1-0 victory that preserved their record eight-straight winning streak at the World Cup.
While the Croatian fans were delighted with how their team played, the Brazilians were relieved to get out with a win.

A Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution`s outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
Conference Medal winners will be honored at the State Farm Pride of the Pac-10 Luncheon, held in Los Angeles in March 2007 during the Pac-10 Men`s Basketball Tournament. Read Full Article

Salem-News.com Sports (June 13, 2006 11:49)World Cup: South Korea Tops Togo 2-1 By CLARE NULLIS, Associated Press Writer(FRANKFURT, Germany) - Ahn Jung-hwan scored the winning goal in the 72nd minute Tuesday to give South Korea a 2-1 win over Togo and its first World Cup victory away from home.
Ahn, who also scored the winner against Italy four years ago to send the Koreans into the World Cup semifinals, sent a 25-meter (yard) shot past Togo goalkeeper Kossi Agassa.
The win gives South Korea three points in Group G, which also includes France and Switzerland.
Lee Chun-soo scored South Korea's equalizer in the 54th, after Mohamed Kader had given the African team the lead in the 31st with a shot from 14 meters (yards). Read Full Article

The last time the French team scored in a World Cup game was when they beat Brazil 3-0 in the 1998 final. Switzerland also held France to draws in two qualifying games.
Despite being forced to play as a lone striker, Thierry Henry went close with three shots and a header in the first half, while Zinedine Zidane's deft touches set up the best French moves.

Salem-News.com Sports (June 12, 2006 19:52)Eugene School District Files Appeal of Castillo`s OSAA Decision Salem-News.comThe new six-class plan carves the state’s schools into six groupings by enrollment for sports, rather than the current four. (SALEM) - Eugene School District Superintendent George Russell on Monday directed the district lawyer to file an appeal of the latest ruling on the OSAA six-class plan.
That appeal to the Oregon Court of Appeals was to be filed Monday afternoon.
There is no set time-line for the court to hear or decide the case; the district assumes the six-class plan is in effect until further notice.
