No. 8 Beavers Get a Day to Shake Off Loss Before Playing Georgia

(OMAHA, Neb.) - Oregon State had a day away from the College World Series on Sunday, giving the No. 8-ranked Beavers a chance to spend some time with their families and see the sights of Omaha. OSU lost its opener in the CWS on Saturday night, falling to Miami 11-1.

“Tonight was bad,“ OSU catcher Mitch Canham said after that game. “Monday will be better.“

With no game Sunday, the Beavers were guests at a team brunch and then practiced for just over an hour at Creighton. Afterward, OSU head coach Pat Casey took a last look at the loss to Miami and pointed toward Monday`s game against Georgia.

World Cup: Brazil Hangs on to Beat Australia 2-0

Two matches into this World Cup, Brazil is still searching for its samba.

(MUNICH, Germany) - A team reckoned to be one of the most talented in the country's unrivaled soccer history again couldn't stage the show everyone has been expecting, but still advanced to the second round with a shaky 2-0 win Sunday over Australia.

The lack of flair may bother Brazilian fans who expect not just wins but works of art. It doesn't bother coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.

"We are in the round of 16," Parreira said. "The importance of this match was to guarantee our participation in the (next round)."

Jay Locey Officially Announced as OSU Assistant Head Coach

The Linfield coach is a native of Corvallis who was singled out twice as OSU's top student-athlete, Jay Locey is coming home.

(CORVALLIS) - Jay Locey, the 10-year head coach at Linfield College, has accepted the position of assistant head coach at Oregon State University, Beaver head coach Mike Riley announced Friday. Locey will have the assignment of running backs and tight ends.

Locey is one of the most successful coaches in the history of small college football. The five-time Northwest Conference Coach of the Year led the Wildcats to the 2004 NCAA Division III title and during his tenure as head coach, guided the program to a record of 84-18, including a streak of 41 consecutive wins.

“Jay is a great addition to our Oregon State staff,“ Riley said. “He is well versed in all aspects of football and has received many national honors. Jay will be a great mentor for our players and I`m excited to have him as part of the staff.“

World Cup: Angola Goalie Frustrates Mexico in 0-0 Tie

At times it was desperate, and occasionally ugly. It also was a point in the World Cup for Angola.

(HANOVER, Germany) - Anchored by goalkeeper Joao Ricardo and defender Jamba, World Cup newcomer Angola frustrated heavily favored Mexico and hung on for a 0-0 draw Friday night.

Ricardo made several dramatic saves, and the chances he flubbed somebody — usually Jamba — came to clear from danger.

Five days after losing 1-0 to former colonial ruler Portugal, the Black Antelopes withstood an early surge from Mexico, displayed a bit of offensive initiative and then managed to overcome playing a man down for the final 11 minutes.

(OMAHA, Neb.) - After running through their final practice yesterday, the Oregon State baseball team is ready for their opening game of the 2006 College World Series.

He flipped his car in a practice run yesterday in Portland. But Champ Car driver Oriol Servia escaped injury and went on to finish ninth in qualifying with his backup car.

The Portland Timbers are on the road in Rochester, New York, for a game against the Raging Rhinos this afternoon.

World Cup: U.S. Bounces Back to Tie Italy 1-1

(KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany) - Bloodied but not beaten, the United States bounced back to hold Italy to a 1-1 tie Saturday night in an ugly World Cup game with three ejections, a disallowed American goal and wide-open play.

With thousands of fans in red, white and blue cheering the United States on a warm night, the Americans came out aggressive — and then hung on while playing most of the second half at a man disadvantage. Their reward was their first World Cup point in Europe.

U.S. goalkeeper Kasey Keller saved the Americans with a pair of point-blank stops on Alessandro Del Piero in the final 20 minutes.

World Cup: England Beats Trinidad 2-0 to Advance

(NUREMBERG, Germany) - Peter Crouch and his England teammates spent most of the game missing chances in front of the net. With the time ticking away and England only minutes from a shocking draw against tiny Trinidad and Tobago, Crouch made the best of his last opportunity.

Crouch headed in a cross by David Beckham in the 83rd minute to help England advance to the second round of the World Cup with a 2-0 victory Thursday.

"It was disappointing, but you can't let your head drop and obviously you've got to keep getting in there," Crouch said. "I think with our delivery, and especially from David Beckham from the right, I think you're always going to get other chances. Thankfully, I managed to take one of them."

World Cup: Ecuador Reaches 2nd Round at World Cup

(HAMBURG, Germany) - Ecuador reached the second round of the World Cup for the first time after beating Costa Rica 3-0 Thursday.

Carlos Tenorio and Agustin Delgado each scored their second goals of the tournament to go through alongside host Germany, which beat Poland 1-0 Wednesday. Ivan Kaviedes added a third goal in injury time.

Costa Rica and Poland are the first teams to be eliminated from the 32-nation field.

Goalkeeper Cristian Mora, again playing with Ecuador flags painted on his cheeks, jumped with joy after Delgado's goal built a two-goal margin early in the second half.

(McMINNVILLE) - The man who coached Linfield to the Division Three national football championship in 2004 is leaving to take an assistant coaching job at Oregon State.

The Oregon State baseball team has arrived in Omaha for the College World Series. Second baseman Chris Kunda says the team seems more relaxed this year because many of the players participated in last year's World Series and know what to expect.

Paul McAnulty went five-for-five and homered during an eight-run seventh inning as the Portland Beavers rallied for an eleven-ten win over the Tucson Sidewinders.
