Salem-News.com Sports (June 05, 2006 23:42)No. 8 Beavers to Host Stanford in NCAA Baseball Super Regionals Salem-News.com SPORTS(CORVALLIS) - Oregon State will play host to Stanford in the NCAA Corvallis Super Regional baseball tournament this Saturday, Sunday and Monday (if necessary)at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Game times for the best-of-three series between the No. 8-ranked Beavers (42-14) and the Cardinal (33-25) will be announced Tuesday at 8:00 AM PDT.
Tickets for the NCAA Corvallis Super Regional will go on sale Tuesday at 8:30 AM General admission tickets will be available online at www.osubeavers.com; both reserved and general admission tickets will be available by phone at 1-800-GO BEAVS or 541-737-4455, or in person at the OSU Athletic Ticket Office in Gill Coliseum. All tickets sold in advance will be full-series tickets; the cost is $36 for reserved seats, $24 for adult general admission or $18 for student general admission that are good for admission to every game of the series.
Fans should note that the seating located between the third-base dugout and the home team bullpen will be reserved seating for the NCAA Super Regional; those seats had been sold as general admission during the NCAA Corvallis Regional last weekend. Also, there are currently 600 seats being reserved for Stanford and some of those may be released for sale on Wednesday at 8:30 AM. Read Full Article

Salem-News.com Sports (June 05, 2006 23:19)Former MLB Umpire Eric Gregg Dies After Stroke By DAN GELSTON, AP Sports Writer(PHILADELPHIA) - Former major league umpire Eric Gregg, known for his big personality, extra-wide strike zone and oversized frame, died Monday night, a day after a massive stroke. He was 55.
"I want him to be remembered as someone who loved the game of baseball, someone who was determined to make it no matter what," his son, Kevin Gregg, told The Associated Press.
Gregg, whose struggles with weight problems saw him reach almost 400 pounds, told family members Sunday morning at his home in Ardmore, Pa., that he couldn't feel anything on his left side. He was hospitalized and died at 6:45 PM. Monday. Read Full Article

Davey Allison, driving with a broken hand, had to glue Velcro onto his cast and the steering wheel so he could grip it.
Dale Earnhardt raced with a broken sternum and Darrell Waltrip did it with a broken leg. Even safety-conscious Jeff Burton admits to once racing while battling a bout of vertigo.
So there was no surprise when reigning NASCAR champion Tony Stewart got behind the wheel and raced 37 laps on Sunday with a broken shoulder blade. Read Full Article

Salem-News.com Sports (June 05, 2006 01:27)No. 8 Beavers Wrap up Regional Title by Beating Hawaii 12-3 Salem-News.com(CORVALLIS) - Bill Rowe drove in six runs and Tyler Graham was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and three runs scored for Oregon State as the No. 8-ranked Beavers beat Hawai`i 12-3 to win the championship of the NCAA Corvallis Regional baseball tournament Sunday evening at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Hawai`i (45-17) had beaten Kansas 9-5 earlier Sunday to reach the championship pairing, but would have needed to beat the Beavers twice to win the tournament.
On Sunday, a crowd of 2,783 saw the Beavers reach the Super Regionals for the second straight season, as OSU pulled away from the Rainbows with three runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh.
“I`m very, very proud of my guys,“ OSU head coach Pat Casey said. “I think we started out ranked sixth or seventh in the country in most polls and that is difficult to sustain and maintain, so I`m very proud of our club. I thought they played well throughout the regional.“

Salem-News.com Sports (June 04, 2006 19:52)Kenseth Rallies to Win Dover By DAN GELSTON, AP Sports Writer(DOVER, Del.) - Matt Kenseth and Jamie McMurray made it a 1-2 finish for Roush Racing.
And what a thrilling finish it was.
McMurray was the driver to beat, holding the lead for most of the final 90 laps Sunday until the patient Kenseth made his move, passing two drivers late before the leader was firmly in view.
Kenseth reached McMurray in lapped traffic, raced side-by-side, then dipped low on a clean pass off the fourth turn with three laps left and pulled away to win at Dover International Speedway.
"They were leaving me plenty of room to pass," Kenseth said. "I just caught him at the right time and was able to just barely squeeze in front."
Kevin Harvick finished third, followed by Jeff Burton and Kyle Busch. Jimmie Johnson maintained the points lead, finishing sixth after starting a season-worst 42nd.

Salem-News.com Sports (June 04, 2006 00:07)Nickerson, Kunda Lead No. 8 Beavers Past Kansas, 11-3 in Regional Salem-News.com SPORTS(CORVALLIS) - Jonah Nickerson became Oregon State`s career strikeout leader and Chris Kunda homered twice, driving in five runs, as the No. 8-ranked Beavers beat Kansas 11-3 in the winners` bracket game Saturday evening at the NCAA Corvallis Regional baseball tournament at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (41-14 overall) took control of the game with a seven-run second inning against the Jayhawks (43-24).
The Beavers are now guaranteed a chance to play for the championship. Kansas and Hawai`i (44-16) will meet Sunday at 1:00 PM; the winner will face Oregon State at 6:00 PM If OSU wins the second game of the day, it wins the tournament, but a win by Kansas or Hawai`i against OSU would send the tournament to a winner-take-all game Monday at 2:00 PM.
There are approximately 600 tickets - including a limited number of reserved seats - remaining for Sunday`s games and they can be purchased at the ballpark. Sales for the game between Hawai`i and Kansas will begin when the gates open at 11:00 AM; sales for the game between that winner and OSU will go on sale during the fifth inning of Sunday`s first game. OSU (40-14 overall) will play Kansas (43-23) in the winners` bracket game on Saturday at 6 p.m.; Wright State (32-26) will play Hawai`i (43-16) in the losers` bracket game at 1:00 PM.
Approximately 600 tickets remain for the game between Oregon State and Kansas, including a limited number of reserved seats. Kunda - named the Pacific-10 Conference`s Defensive Player of the Year earlier this week for his play at second base - won Friday`s game with his bat rather than his glove for the Beavers before a crowd of 2,587. After watching pair of strikes from Raider closer Joe Smith, Kunda fouled off a pitch and then watched a ball before driving Smith`s next delivery into the gap in left-centerfield for the decisive runs. Salem-News.com Sports (June 03, 2006 23:30)Winter Hawk Goaltender Selected to Try Out for Canadian National Team Salem-News.com SPORTS(PORTLAND) - Portland Winter Hawks goaltender Kurtis Mucha is one of only six goaltenders under 18 years of age in Canada selected by Hockey Canada for is first ever Program of Excellence Goaltender Camp June 8-11, 2006 in Calgary.
The camp will help identify players who will be selected to represent Canada in the World Under-18 Junior World Cup to be held in Slovakia and the Czech Republic August 8-12. The tournament features teams from Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. Canada has won gold in 11 of the past 12 international summer Under-18 events.
Mucha, a 16-year-old rookie with the Winter Hawks last season, came on strong at the end of the 2005-06 season and in the playoffs. Mucha played in 20 of the Hawks` final 21 regular season games. He was (11-3-0-3) in his last 17 regular season starts and posted a 1.86 average and a 92.2% save percentage, in his last 15 starts. Read Full Article
