Oregon Guard Adds Helicopter in Search for Missing Brothers

Two anglers have been missing since Sunday; one is only 8-years old.
(SALEM, Ore,) -
The Oregon Guard reports that one OH-58 Kiowa helicopter piloted by Chief Warrant Officer Mike Cataldo was preparing to depart the Army Aviation Support Facility #1 in Salem, Oregon at 12:30 PM, en route to Independence where it will join in the search for the two missing fishermen.
The Army National Guard Kiowa and crew is responding to a request from the Polk County Sheriff's Office. The helicopter and crew were expected to be on scene no later than 1:00 PM today.
Kay Fristad with the Oregon Military Department says they will work closely with the Independence Police Department who is the Incident Command on the scene.

Woodburn Man Arrested on Kidnapping Charges

Police say the suspect also had warrants for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Giving False Information.
(WOODBURN, Ore.) -
Marion County deputies arrested a Woodburn man for kidnapping and other charges last night, after he allegedly kidnapped his girlfriend and her three children.
The Marion County Sheriff's Office was called out to a report of a man with a gun in the 300 Block of Main Street in Jefferson, Oregon, at 11:00 PM.
When deputies arrived, they arrested 29-year old Miguel Serratos-Jimenez of Woodburn on four counts of Kidnapping, Menacing, Reckless Endangering and Possession of a Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine.

Two Missing Anglers Prompt Search in Polk County

Fishing equipment was recovered from the banks of the fast moving river, but the two anglers remain missing.
(INDEPENDENCE, Ore.) -
Two brothers dropped off for a day of fishing at Riverview Park in Independence have been missing since Sunday evening.
Independence Police say 20-year old Alvin Troub, and his brother 8-year old Michael Runyon, were dropped off at Riverview Park in Independence to go fishing. When family members returned to the park two hours later at 4:00 PM ,the two could not be found.
A search was initiated after information about the missing men was reported to the Independence Police Department. The search quickly included Independence Police Officers, Polk County Fire District #1, and the Polk County Sheriff's Office - including their patrol division, river patrol, and search and rescue unit.

Weakening Winds Means Good News for Firefighters

Fire officials say threats of new and spreading fires remain.

AccuWeather.com reports good news for firefighters today, as Santa Ana winds weaken and high pressure over the Rockies begins to break down.
However, the winds will not completely subside as gusts up to 35 mph will be possible in the typically prone areas through midday.
These types of winds will still have the possibility of generating new fires and spreading existing fires. Residents should continue to exercise extreme care when dealing with cigarette butts and sparks across Southern California.

Two Die in Crash Northwest of Baker City

The highway was closed for over 5 hours while troopers and an OSP crash reconstructionist completed the scene investigation.
(BAKER CITY, Ore.) -
Police say a motorcycle rider and a passenger in a car died Saturday afternoon when the two vehicles collided on Highway 30 about five miles northwest of Baker City.
The crash was reported at about 4:48 PM, police said. The Baker County Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police and Baker Fire Department responded to the crash on Highway 30 near milepost 44.
The preliminary investigation appears to indicate that a 1997 Subaru Impreza with 3 passengers, driven by 48-year old Katherine Knox of Haines, Oregon, was traveling westbound on Highway 30 when it veered across the road into the eastbound lanes where a group of 3 motorcycles were traveling. One of the motorcycles, a 2007 Honda operated by 47-year old Timothy Hunt of Baker City, collided with the right side of the car as it crossed into the eastbound lane.

U.S. Troops Will Stay in Iraq Three More Years

The United States will remain in Iraq for the next three years, but they will withdraw to major bases by 2009.
(BAGHDAD, Iraq) -
Some world news sources are announcing that a goal of attaining an American-free Iraq by 2011 has been approved. Others are relaying the message that the U.S. has essentially received permission from the Iraqi government to stay for three more years. Like all aspects of this war, it is largely a matter of how you look at it.
The Iraqi cabinet gave strong approved to a security pact today that allows the American military presence in Iraq to continue for up to three more years. The overcoming protests
Pressures from hard-line Shiite nationalists and Iran appeared at one point as though they would stall the pact, which is expected to go before the parliament for final approval by the end of November.

Casualty Numbers in Iraq War Escalate

Combat and accidents continue to claims lives in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -
Casualties are up in Iraq in recent days and weeks. As the word is released that the U.S. will stay in Iraq for the next three years, the Department of Defense released information regarding a number of casualties in Iraq, and the death of one soldier in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.
Eight deaths have been reported since November 5th. Casualties in this group are both combat-related, non-combat related, and from vehicle accidents.
All who were killed in recent days are members of the U.S. Army. The number of casualties in Afghanistan seems to have dropped in recent weeks.

Oregon Guard Soldier Joins Capitol War Protest (VIDEO)

An Oregon Guard soldier joins the 24-hour vigil protesting a deployment to Iraq in 2009.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
An Oregon woman protesting a national guard deployment to the Iraq War was arrested Friday night by Oregon state troopers. Political activist Michele Darr of Corvallis is no stranger to capitol demonstrations; she spent months outside the capitol in protest of the Iraq War in 2003.
Advocates taking part in the vigil and fast say Michele Darr's Civil Rights were violated when she was arrested, and Saturday the list of advocates on the capitol steps grew to include an Oregon soldier who is part of the scheduled deployment. News of the arrest prompted Richard Portelli, a soldier in the Oregon Guard, to join Darr's cause.
Attorneys say the state law that allow police to arrest Darr conflicts with federal laws that grant the public, rights to access public property.

A Jordanian interpreter who works with the Marines in Iraq's Anbar Province gives a candid interview about his experience.
(ANBAR PROVINCE, Iraq) -
I met a gentleman named Jakope Al Salim in Iraq while spending time with the Marines at the Al Asad Air Base in the Anbar Province. These Marines normally work on airplanes, but in Iraq where there is a shortage of personnel, they have been pulling infantry and military police duty and operating the base entrances and exits.
Jakope has worked with Marines in a number of places including Al Asad and Fallujah. At this time he is working with Marines near the Iraq/Saudi Arabia border. He says Iraqi people are increasingly working with and placing trust in the Marines. Last summer when I was there, combat encounters were minimal and cooperation was increasing.
But things are changing. He says the election of Barack Obama has caused many Iraqi people to feel unsure about their future.
