Volunteer Firefighter Recruits Sought for Regional Fire Academy

Approximately 70 percent of Oregon's firefighters are volunteers.

(JEFFERSON, Ore. ) - jefferson fire truck Local fire districts including Turner, Jefferson, Aumsville, Scio, Stayton, Lyons, Sublimity, Gates, Detroit, and Idanha are recruiting community members who would like to become volunteer firefighters.

Those who are selected will participate in the 2007 Santiam Firefighter Academy starting August 15th.

Students will not only learn in a classroom setting, but will also experience live fire training.

Driver Killed After Dump Truck Falls Off Bridge

The truck landed upside down in about 10 feet of water, trapping the driver in the cab.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - fatal crash image The Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Eugene Police, Eugene Fire, and Santa Clara Fire responded to an industrial accident at Delta Sand and Gravel on Tuesday.

An employee was operating a large Cat 769C dump truck on a single lane bridge.

For unknown reasons the dump truck went off the roadway and into the river.

Five Dead After Sightseeing Plane Crashes in Alaska

Alaska State Police and NTSB are investigating the crash.

(KETCHIKAN, Alaska) - DeHavilland Beaver photo On Tuesday, at 4:39 PM, Alaska State Troopers were notified of a missing aircraft in the Misty Fjords National Monument.

The aircraft, a DeHavilland Beaver operated by Taquan Air was on a flight seeing tour from Ketchikan.

On board were the pilot and four passengers from the cruise ship Sun Princess.

Teen Boogie Boarder Rescued Off Oregon Coast

The boy was reported as being exhausted and mildly hypothermic.

(LINCOLN CITY, Ore. ) - Coast Guard Helicopter The Coast Guard rescued a 15-year-old male boogie boarder near Lincoln City, Ore., Tuesday.

Coast Guard Station Depoe Bay received a call around 11:00 AM of a boogie boarder in distress.

A 47-foot motor life boat crew, a 25-foot response boat crew and a beach search crew were dispatched to the last known location of the boy.

MySpace Bars 29,000 Convicted Sex Offenders

Critics of MySpace are calling for new laws to make such sites safer for children.

(RALEIGH, N.C.) - girls on internet MySpace has admitted it detected and deleted over 29,000 convicted sex offenders on its service, more than four times the figure it had initially reported.

All of those barred are thought to be based in the US.

The company, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, said it hoped other social networking sites would follow its lead.

Oregon Coast Man Busted Near Baker City After Chase

The pursuit happened on Interstate 84 east of Baker City.

(BAKER CITY, Ore.) - Chase scene in Eastern Oregon 7 24 07 Police say an 18-year old Depoe Bay man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after he attempted to elude Oregon State Police troopers and Baker County deputies for nearly 30 miles at speeds up to 115 mph.

The chase came to an end east of Huntington when the driver lost control avoiding spike strips, and his vehicle was crashed into an OSP trooper's car.

(BOULDER, Colo) - University of Colorado A University of Colorado professor whose essay compared some 9-11 victims to a Nazi leader has been fired.

The University of Colorado Board of Regents on Tuesday voted to accept President Hank Brown’s recommendation to dismiss ethnic studies professor Ward Churchill from the faculty of CU-Boulder for conduct that fell below minimum standards of professional integrity.

Police Find Boys Abandoned in Vehicle; Father Arrested

It remains unclear why the children were left in the car alone.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - mcso news photo Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies have arrested the father of two infant boys after he abandoned them while the slept in a vehicle in the driveway of a home on Mink Ct. NE.

Marion County Sheriff’s spokesman Kevin Rau says deputies responded to the home just after 1:00 AM Tuesday morning after the homeowner found the two boys sleeping inside a Purple 1996 Hyundai Accent two door.

The father of the two boys was found later sleeping inside an SUV a block away.

Wilsonville Man Arrested for July 22nd Hit and Run Crash

The suspect says he turned himself in after watching Sunday night media reports about the incident.

(WILSONVILLE, Ore.) - 23-year old Chad Barnett Suomela of Wilsonville.  Photo courtesy: Clackamas County Sheriff`s Office Oregon State Police arrested a Wilsonville-area man Tuesday morning related to a hit & run crash early Sunday on southbound Interstate 205 near Interstate 5 that injured a Woodburn motorcyclist.

The suspect, 23-year old Chad Barnett Suomela of Wilsonville, contacted OSP to turn himself in following an injury hit & run crash on July 22nd at 3:32 AM. The crash happened while he was southbound on Interstate 205 near milepost 1.
