Capitol Hill Helps Turn Shoes into Sports Surfaces

Oregon delegation collected old sneakers to recycle them into places for kids to play.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Campaigning took on a whole new meaning during June as five House Members squared off, not over control of the House, but over collecting old sneakers.

Participating in Nike and the National Recycling Coalition's Capitol Hill Reuse-A-Shoe Challenge, the Oregon House delegation competed to collect as many worn-out athletic shoes as possible. These shoes will be recycled and turned into sports and play surfaces around the world.

Inmate Found Dead at Snake River Correctional Facility

The death is considered a suicide.

(ONTARIO, Ore.) - Prison officials say that at approximately 11:30 PM on Wednesday, an inmate named Nathan Bashaw was found asphyxiated alone in his cell in the Special Management Unit at Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario.

Prison security and medical staff attempted to resuscitate Mr. Bashaw, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Detectives are continuing the investigation of the suspicious death of an unidentified adult male found Wednesday morning on the ocean shore west of Little Creek Cove in north Newport.

The manner and cause of death are still under investigation and an autopsy is pending. Investigators are releasing further physical descriptors and a left shoulder tattoo photograph to help identify the man.

Clackamas County Implements Alcohol Ordinance at Barton, Carver Parks

Signs are being prepared and staff is beginning training for regulation of alcohol in two county parks beginning Friday morning.

(OREGON CITY, Ore. ) - Clackamas County Commissioners have approved an ordinance that gives the County Administrator authority to regulate possession of alcoholic beverages at county parks when deemed necessary to protect public health or safety.

Based upon the ordinance approved by the Board, County Administrator Jonathan Mantay announced that possession of alcoholic beverages will be prohibited in Barton and Carver County parks effective 12:01 AM Friday.

Fire Damages Keizer Home

While crews were busy with the fire, they received another call for a motor vehicle accident on Wittenberg Lane NE.

(KEIZER, Ore.) - A passing motorist alerted Keizer Fire District firefighters of a house fire early Wednesday evening at 4815 Verda Lane NE.

Fire District Spokesman Jim Trett says the driver saw smoke and flames coming from the single family residence. The structure suffered fire damage in the kitchen and attic areas and the rest of the structure suffered smoke damage. Nobody was injured.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Salem Police Street Crimes Unit arrested three people Monday for possessing and delivering large amounts of marijuana. They also took three kids into protective custody.

Salem Police Lt. Jim Anglemier says that around 6:30 PM Monday, detectives from his agency and Polk County were involved in the investigation and arrests.

Portland Man Arrested After Chase and Crash in Eugene

The driver was arrested for driving under the influence.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - An Oregon State Police trooper arrested a Portland-area man Wednesday afternoon after a police chase and crash that left the suspect's car smashed into a tree.

Around 3:00 PM today, 911 calls came in over southbound car on Interstate 5. A trooper set up near milepost 191 and observed the car. Noting numerous traffic violations, he attempted to stop it.
