Gangs, Graffiti Topics For North Salem Crime Prevention Council Meeting

Salem gang and graffiti problems are reaching levels like those of the late 1990's.

(SALEM) - The Central Crime Prevention Council meeting for the north area of Salem will be held Thursday at the Salem Senior Center,1055 Erixon St. NE, at 6:30 PM for residents of the Northgate, Highland, and Grant neighborhood areas.

The Crime Prevention Council will provide an avenue for residents to come together and interact with police regarding issue of crime and public safety.

Convicted Sex Offender Who Advertised on Craigslist Arrested by Detectives

The man has a conviction for similar charges involving a Molalla girl in 2004.

(PORTLAND) - A known sex offender was arrested by Washington County detectives and charged with having sex with a seventeen year old girl he met through the Internet. 36-year old Douglas Steven French is the same man arrested in Montana in 2004 with a missing 16-year-old Molalla girl.

Detectives are seeking other victims.

Lake George Fire Near Sisters Doubles in Size

Heavy smoke from the wildfire has worked it way into Sisters and Black Butte, prompting the closure of the McKenzie Highway and prompting DEQ to issue a health advisory on Tuesday.

(SISTERS) - Winds-fanned Lake George Fire on the Mt. Washington Wilderness Area to 4,250 acres Tuesday and kept firefighters busy, 850 firefighters were even pulled back for safety reasons, but officials still called it "a good day".

Crews worked on a second contingency line to the east of the fire, burning in very heavy timber.

Historic Albany Building Damaged by Fire

No injuries were reported in this multi-alarm fire.

(ALBANY) - Albany firefighters have put out a 2-alarm blaze in the historic Flinn Building in downtown Albany Wednesday morning.

Albany Fire Department spokeswoman Wanda Omdahl says the first call came in at about 4:30 AM.

The 1890s building was undergoing renovation.

Omdahl said the building houses nine businesses and a church downstairs, and four apartments upstairs were evacuated.

Man Killed by Train in Salem

(SALEM) - Salem police say a 36-year-old man was struck and killed by a Union Pacific freight train early Wednesday morning.

Sgt. Steve Birr says the incident occurred at about 4:00 AM near the intersection of Portland Road and Silverton Road.

The train, was pulling over 50 boxcars, and came to a stop near D Street.

Feds Begin Review of Oregon Wolf Plan

Three intensive investigations of wolf reports have been conducted by wildlife officials in Oregon's Hells Canyon, Imnaha River and Tipton areas since April.

(SALEM) - Oregon is asking federal officials for a permit to reduce the state's gray wolf population.

The plan calls for killing or harming wolves. State officials are seeking the permit because without it; lethal response to the issue violates the federal Endangered Species Act.

Detective Jim Strovinkn with the Clackamas County Sheriff says they are now seeking more information from the public in connection with this investigation, and they are asking any possible, additional victims to come forward.

(KEIZER) - A Keizer Police officer shot and wounded a dog while walking up to the owner's door Tuesday. Police say the officer was responding to a report of a previous bite from the same dog.
