Spay Day USA 2006 Sees More Than 1100 Cats Fixed

The event served kitties in Salem, Portland, Woodburn, Newberg, Gresham, Forest Grove, Hillsboro, Sherwood, North Plains, and Tigard

(SALEM) - The results are in: Thanks to a major team effort, more cats than ever before were helped during the fifth annual Tom & Mom Cat Special $10 spay/neuter event in honor of Spay Day USA. Breaking all past records, over 1,100 qualified cats were fixed. Here's what one recipient had to say:

Salem students Get Free Practice Run on the SAT and PSAT from Kaplan Test Prep

(SALEM) - To give students a leg up in today`s highly competitive college admissions market, Kaplan Test Prep, the nation`s oldest and largest provider of test preparation and admissions services, is offering free practice tests for the SAT and PSAT to area high school students.

Students will have the opportunity to sample the test and gauge their strengths and weaknesses at Willamette University on Saturday, April 22nd. Here is the schedule for the day:

Expect Winter Driving Conditions This Weekend

(SALEM) - Forecasters are calling for as much as three feet of snow in various parts of the Cascades over the Easter weekend.
Winter driving conditions should be expected by anyone planning to travel through the Cascades, officials with the Department of Transportation say ice and snow could lead to hazardous travel.

ODOT says you should carry chains and be prepared to use them
The studded tire season ended March 31st, so it is currently illegal to use studded tires in Oregon. The fine is about $150. But travelers can always use chains, which studies show to be as effective as, or more effective, than studded tires in most driving conditions...

Oregonians Pay More Than Their Share Because Corporations Pay Less

Oregonians are paying more than their share of taxes this tax day because corporations are paying less, according to a new analysis of long-term changes in Oregon income and property taxes, released today by the Oregon Center for Public Policy (OCPP).

(SILVERTON) - `This tax day, Oregonians are victims of the Great Corporate Tax Shift,` said Michael Leachman, policy analyst at the OCPP.

The study finds that in the next budget cycle (2007-09) corporations operating in Oregon will pay just 4.5 percent of all state income taxes, leaving the other 95.5 percent to personal income taxpayers, including many small businesses. In the mid-1970s, corporations paid 18.5 percent of state income taxes.

`Multi-state corporations are the main beneficiaries of the decline in the corporate income tax,` said Leachman. `These companies reap 87 percent of the taxable corporate profits in Oregon...."

Mumps Epidemic Spreads: Oregonians Advised to be on Lookout

(SALEM) - A mumps outbreak that first appeared to be confined to one state has spread, and federal health officials are investigating airline travel as a potential source
of exposure. All states have been advised to be on the lookout for additional cases, public health officials in the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) said today.

As of Thursday, 605 possible mumps cases were reported in Iowa with additional cases reported in six neighboring states. Two of the infected persons traveled on commercial airline flights and potentially exposed other passengers...

Willamette Meteorite to Return to Oregon as Part of Evergreen Aviation Museum`s Collection

(MCMINNVILLE) - The Evergreen Aviation Museum will soon display a portion of Oregon`s famous Willamette Meteorite.

The meteorite, originally found on a West Linn hillside and sold to a New York City Museum in 1906, will return 100 years later, in part, to its Oregon beginnings.

With recommendation from Oregon Congressman David Wu, Evergreen International Aviation owner and founder Delford M. Smith purchased a piece of the famed meteorite at Bonhams Auction House in New York City on Tuesday and donated the artifact to the Museum on behalf of the Evergreen family of companies.

This time, for sure, it is the past-learnings they should have achieved, literally decades-ago, that will tell the tale; this time, for full attention of voters rightly angered by years of neglect; to sue for Constitutional rights to decent and decisive education for their children -- and for oncoming generations,too.

This time, too, we will see whether `it takes one to work with one` --since Susan Castillo, the Oregon Superintendent of Education, will surely play a key role `this time`.

Snow Advisory Issued For Oregon Cascades

ODOT Reminder: Having studded tires on your vehicle is now illegal in Oregon

(GOVERNMENT CAMP) - The Northern Oregon Cascades along with the South Washington Cascades and the Cascades in Lane County have all been issued a snow advisory through tomorrow morning.

Those affected include Government Camp, Detroit, Santiam Pass, McKenzie Bridge, the Willamette Pass and Mount St. Helens.

The advisory remains in effect until 7:00 AM Saturday.

Rain will continue this morning with snow in the mountains over five-thousand feet. Steady precipitation will turn to showers on the coast this morning and inland this afternoon.

(SALEM) - If you need more time to file your Oregon personal income tax return, filing an extension is easier than ever.

If you file a federal extension, check the "extension filed" box on your Oregon return.

You don´t have to attach a copy of the federal extension form to your Oregon return.

"It's important to remember that an extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay taxes you owe," said Deanna Mack, assistant policy coordinator.
