(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - University of Portland men’s tennis head coach Aaron Gross has announced that Northwest standout Nick Wales (Salem, Ore./Sprague HS) has committed to attend the university and will join the Pilots for the fall of 2007.
Wales recently led Sprague to a district team title and is preparing for the 2007 OSAA 6A State Championships this week.
Last week, Wales defeated Sprague teammate Jackson Martin 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 to win the Central Valley Conference district championship.

(SALEM, Va. ) - Fresh from their euphoric triumph at the NCAA Division III West Region championship tournament in Pineville, La., the Linfield Wildcats must regroup and refocus in preparation for their first opponent in the national tournament, the Emory Eagles of Atlanta, Ga. Linfield staved off elimination four times in the West Regional to advance to the eight-team NCAA Division III Finals.
The Wildcats remained in Alexandria, La., on Monday and will fly directly to Roanoke, Va., Tuesday for the national championship tournament.
Top-seeded Linfield faces eighth-seeded Emory Friday at 11:00 AM EDT in the tournament’s opening game at the Moyer Sports Complex in nearby Salem, Va. Read Full Article

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - The University of Oregon softball team leaves for the NCAA Regionals on Wednesday, heading to its fourth postseason appearance in the last five years under head coach Kathy Arendsen.
Oregon is the No. 2 seed in the South Carolina Regional, scheduled to play the first game at 1:00 PM on Friday against No. 3 seed Penn State (26-23) at Beckham Field in Columbia.
It won’t be the first time the Ducks and Nittany Lions have played one another in the postseason, in 2003 - Arendsen’s first as head coach - Oregon defeated Penn State 10-8 in the first game of the Fullerton Regional.

(SALEM, Ore.) - State fishery officials met today and decided to re-open the mainstem Columbia River to retention of adipose fin-clipped Chinook salmon from the Tongue Point/Rocky Point line upstream to the I-5 Bridge effective May 16th through May 31st, or until the harvest guideline is reached.
The salmon fishery in this area closed April 16th based on catch projections that indicated the fishery would reach the ESA-listed upriver spring Chinook impact allocation by April 15th.
Although actual harvest fell somewhat short of the guideline, passage at Bonneville Dam wasn’t strong enough to assure the run would meet the pre-season forecast of 78,500 upriver spring Chinook until recently. Read Full Article

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Oregon State senior Mia Longfellow was named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for May 8th-14th, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced on Tuesday.
Longfellow led the Beavers to their first Pac-10 weekend sweep of the season in OSU’s final three regular season games.
Oregon State’s offense caught fire and the Beavers averaged nine runs per game in a victory over California and two wins against No. 16 Stanford. Read Full Article

(CHARLOTTE, N.C.) - Dale Earnhardt Jr. was docked 100 points Tuesday, and his crew chief, Tony Eury Jr., was fined $100,000 and suspended for six races for an illegal part at Darlington Raceway.
The penalty is a significant setback in his team's bid to win a Cup title before racing's most popular driver leaves after the season.

(NEW YORK) - Robert Horry of the San Antonio Spurs has been suspended two games without pay and Amaré Stoudemire and Boris Diaw of the Phoenix Suns have each been suspended one game without pay for their actions in Monday night's game, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations.
Horry has been suspended for flagrantly fouling Phoenix’s Steve Nash and striking Raja Bell above the shoulders with a forearm.
Stoudemire and Diaw have been suspended for leaving “the immediate vicinity of their bench” during an altercation. Read Full Article
