NBA: Mavs Dirk Nowitzki Named NBA MVP

Nowitzki is the first European-born player to win the NBA MVP Award.

(NEW YORK) - Dirk Nowitzki photoDirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks was named the winner of the Maurice Podoloff Trophy as the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the 2006-07 season, the NBA announced today.

Rounding out the top five in voting for MVP were Phoenix’s Steve Nash (1,013 points/44 first-place votes), the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant (521 points/two first-place votes), San Antonio’s Tim Duncan (286 points) and Cleveland’s LeBron James (183 points).

The seven-foot forward led the Mavericks to the best-record (67-15, .817) in the NBA, tying for the sixth-best single-season winning percentage in NBA history.

Wentzell NWC Player of the Year as 12 Bruins Receive All-NWC Recognition

George Fox posted a 30-9 record during the regular season, its 12th winning season in as many year under head coach Pat Bailey.

(NEWBERG, Ore. ) - george fox logoTwelve members of the George Fox University baseball team have received All-Northwest Conference recognition for 2007, including NWC Player of the Year Dan Wentzell and five others who were named to the First Team, in voting by the league’s nine coaches and announced recently by the conference office.

All-NWC First Team Bruins include right fielder Wentzell, center fielder Drew Johnson, second baseman Pat Bailey, catcher Ryan Fobert, starting pitcher Nick Bratney, and utility player Josh Burch.

NBA Playoffs: Suns Storm Back to Knot Series at 2-2

(SAN ANTONIO ) - suns logoSteve Nash had the final two of his 15 assists on behind-the-back dishes to Amare Stoudemire for a pair of short shots in the final minute, and Phoenix completed its comeback from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to steal a 104-98 Game 4 win and tie its series with the host Spurs at 2-2.

Stoudemire finished with 26 points and nine rebounds and Nash was one of the other five Suns to reach double figures in scoring with his 24 points on 8-for-12 shooting.

One of those points came from the free throw line after a hard Robert Horry foul with 18.2 seconds left.

NBA Playoffs: Cavs Take Game 4 and Control of Series

LeBron James led Cleveland with 30 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

(EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.) - Cavaliers logoIn the end, with game four hanging in the balance, it was Eric Snow who made the biggest play for the visiting Cavaliers.

After LeBron James split a pair of free throws with 10.3 seconds left in the game to put Cleveland up two, Snow crowded Vince Carter on the other end and forced the Nets superstar into a turnover with 1.9 remaining.

The ball -- and New Jersey's hopes for a favorable outcome -- trickled away and the Cavs left the arena with an 87-85 victory to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the series.

Oregon State Drops to No. 16 in Baseball Poll

This weekend, Oregon State hosts seventh-ranked Arizona State.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - osu baseball photoOregon State is No. 16 in this week’s USA Today/ESPN national baseball coaches poll.

The Beavers (36-13 overall, 8-10 Pacific-10) slipped after dropping two of three games to Washington State over the weekend.

OSU is also ranked No. 22 by Baseball America magazine, No. 19 by Collegiate Baseball newspaper and No. 18 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association this week.

Western Oregon Places Nine on All-GNAC Team

Western Oregon finished 28-19 on the season and won the GNAC with an 18-6 mark.

(MONMOUTH, Ore. ) - randy summers photoWestern Oregon, winners of a seventh straight conference baseball title, placed six players on the first team and three more on the second squad of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-star team, announced Monday by the conference office in Spokane.

Second-year leader Jeremiah Robbins was named the GNAC Coach of the Year for the second time, and while rookie third baseman Randy Summers was selected as the GNAC Freshman of the Year.

Named to the first team were Kevin Corrigan (pitcher), Mike Eisenhauer (pitcher), Ben Shivers (relief pitcher), Summers (third base), Paul Fisher (shortstop), and Brent Mertens (outfield).

Oregon Men Rally for Eighth Pac-10 Championship

Five individuals claim titles.

(STANFORD, Calif.) - oregon track photoThe University of Oregon’s men’s track and field teams celebrated a thrilling Pacific-10 Conference Championships victory Sunday in second and final day action at Stanford University, while the Duck women added seventh place at Cobb Track and Angell Field.

On the individual front, the Duck men and women added five individual wins (3M, 2W) and 15 regional marks (7M, 8W) Sunday under sunny, 80-degree slightly breezy skies.

The Duck men held on for their third team victory the past six years thanks to their 114 points – albeit the lowest winning tally in the 29 years of the Pac-10 Conference.
