IBL News: Salem Stampede Rumble Back Into Action

(SALEM) - Salem-News.com SportsThe team itself hasn't been all together for very long, but the Salem Stampede are excited and ready to begin their second International Basketball League season tonight as they host the Seattle Mountaineers at McKay High School.

Salem, which finished sixth in the IBL's Western conference last season with a record of 10-10, as a mixture of familiar faces and new blood on the team.

Back is IBL all-star guard Jeff Dunn, who averaged nearly 25 points per contest in 2006, scoring mostly from beyond the three point line.

NBA News: Kevin Pritchard Named GM of Trail Blazers

Pritchard, 39, becomes the franchise's eighth general manager.

(PORTLAND) - pritchard photoThe Portland Trail Blazers have promoted Kevin Pritchard to the team's general manager, effective today.

Most recently the club's assistant general manager, Pritchard will oversee all day-to-day basketball operations and player personnel decisions in his new role.

"Kevin has repeatedly demonstrated his total dedication to producing a championship caliber culture and performance for our players, both on and off the court," said Trail Blazers owner, Paul Allen.

CCC Basketball: Corban Signs Trio of Aloha High Graduates

The trio joins former Western Mennonite point guard Bryan Martin as members of the Warriors' 2007-08 men's basketball recruiting class.

(SALEM) - warriors logoSixth-year head men's basketball coach Justin Sherwood increased his incoming class of recruits from one to four this past week with the signings of three Aloha High School graduates, including a pair of 2007 seniors and one junior college transfer.

Sherwood, who is entering his sixth season at the helm of the Warriors, received letters of intent from high school seniors Ian Logan and Clay Martin, as well as junior college transfer Paul Martin.

Logan is ranked as the 5th best forward in the state of Oregon according to northwesthoops.com.

NCAA Softball: Oregon State Opens Pac-10 Play with Stanford, Cal

Oregon State is 11-0 on the season when scoring in the first inning.

(CORVALLIS) - osu player photoNo. 17 Oregon State has won two straight Pac-10 openers.

The Beavers capped off their school record 28-game winning streak last season by topping No. 3 ranked University of Arizona by a 2-1 margin in the Mar. 31st, 2006 Pac-10 opener.

One year earlier, OSU defeated No. 7 ranked UCLA by a 2-1 score in 8-innings in the April 1st, 2005 conference opener.

NCAA Baseketball: Oregon's Aaron Brooks Named to the Wooden All-American Team

For the first time in its 31 year history the Wooden Award top five finalists will feature two freshmen, Kevin Durant of Texas and Greg Oden of Ohio State.

(LOS ANGELES) - brooks photoThe John R. Wooden Award Committee announced on Thursday, the 10 student-athletes named to the 2006-2007 Wooden Award All-American Team as well as the top five finalists who will be invited to the 31st Annual Wooden Award presentation in Los Angeles.

The Wooden Award All-Americans, in alphabetical order, are: Arron Afflalo (UCLA), Aaron Brooks (Oregon), Kevin Durant (Texas), Nick Fazekas (Nevada), Tyler Hansbrough (North Carolina), Acie Law (Texas A&M), Joakim Noah (Florida), Greg Oden (Ohio State), Brandon Rush (Kansas), and Alando Tucker (Wisconsin).

NWC Softball: Willamette Takes Two From Lewis & Clark

Willamette's Schlegal earns save in first collegiate appearance in Game #2.

(SALEM) - willamette playerSophomore pitcher Nikki Franchi struck out nine batters and allowed just one hit in 6 1/3 innings as the starter, leading Willamette University to a 6-0 win in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader against Lewis & Clark College on Thursday.

In the second game, Willamette led 4-1 after four innings, but had to hold off the Pioneers for a 5-3 victory.

The Bearcats, ranked #6 in NCAA Division III, upped their overall record to 10-6, while improving to 5-3 in the NWC.

Non-Conference Softball: Oregon Tech Sweeps Willamette

(SALEM) - willamette playerThe Oregon Institute of Technology pounded out 27 hits in two games and pitchers Jenni Bittle, Bess Fagan and Keri Gesner combined for 10 strikeouts and just one walk during the doubleheader, as the visiting Owls defeated Willamette University, 10-5 and 8-3, on Wednesday.

Oregon Tech, ranked #15 in the NAIA, improved to 17-3-1 on the season. Willamette, ranked #6 in NCAA Division III, fell to 9-6 overall.

In the first game, Oregon Tech broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the fourth inninng, then added two more runs in the fifth to take command of the game.

Oregon State Softball Hosts Team Youth Day on Sunday

Non-Conference Baseball: Bruins Celebrate No. 5 Ranking with Win over Cavaliers

The Bruins improved to 19-1 overall with their fifth straight win.

(NEWBERG) - gf logoPlaying their first game since receiving a No. 5 ranking Monday in the first regular season American Baseball Coaches Association / NCAA Division III national baseball poll, the George Fox University Bruins continued their winning ways with a 6-3 non-conference victory over the Concordia University-Portland Cavaliers Wednesday afternoon at The Yard at CU.

With important league contests coming up this weekend, both teams used several pitchers, the Bruins sending seven hurlers to the mound and the Cavaliers six.
