Oregon's Sammons Runs NCAA 10K Mark in Stanford Invite

(STANFORD, Calif.) - oegon runner photoUniversity of Oregon freshman Keara Sammons paced the Duck men’s and women’s distance runners who opened action Friday evening in the first day of the two-day Stanford Invitational, held at Cobb Track and Angell Field on the Stanford University campus.

In the evening finale, the women’s 10,000 meters, Sammons scored UO’s first NCAA women’s provisional mark of the outdoor season (second, 33:54.55) and easily dipped below the NCAA provisional standard of 35:00.00, and was not far off the NCAA automatic mark of 33:33.00.

Sammons’ time moved her to sixth all-time for UO ahead of Liz Wilson (seventh, 34:13.04, 1988).

Pac-10 Baseball: Arizona Ends No. 2 OSU's Win Streak

OSU’s 12-game winning streak had been the Beavers’ longest since a 15-game streak in 1986.

(TUCSON, Ariz. ) - joey wong photoOregon State’s baseball winning streak ended at 12 games on Friday night as the second-ranked Beavers fell to 25th-ranked Arizona 5-4 in the Pac-10 opener for both teams at Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium.

OSU (23-4 overall, 0-1 Pacific-10) saw the Wildcats (23-6, 1-0) score four runs in the fifth inning to win their ninth straight game.

On Friday, Mitch Canham broke into OSU’s all-time top 10 in career runs batted in and Darwin Barney earned a place in the school’s all-time top 10 for career hits.

(MARTINSVILLE, VA ) - nascar photoDenny Hamlin has wanted one of Martinsville Speedway's storied grandfather clock trophies since he first started racing on the half-mile oval a half-dozen years ago.

Hamlin's speed of 95.103 mph (19.911 seconds) bettered the speed of Jamie McMurray, who turned a lap of 94.955 mph to claim second.

GNAC Softball: Western Oregon Falls to UC San Diego, 4-0

Trina Dorn, Jamie Becker and Shanley Young had hits for WOU.

(TURLOCK, Calif.) - wou logoUC San Diego pitcher Melissa Ward tossed a three-hit shutout as the Tritons topped Western Oregon at the Mizuno Tournament of Championships today at Pedretti Park, 4-0.

The Wolves, who are scheduled to play host Cal State Stanislaus in a late game tonight, fell to 10-13 on the season, while UCSD improved to 20-17.

Ward gave up just three singles, walked two and struck out eight in improving to 16-5 on the season.

GNAC Baseball: Western Oregon Splits GNAC Opener with Northwest Nazarene

Paul Fisher was the only WOU player with more than one hit.

(MONMOUTH) - wou logoCoubi Jiles hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs to help Western Oregon to a 6-2 victory in the second game of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader, salvaging a split for the Wolves against Northwest Nazarene.

The Crusaders won the first game 6-3, and are now 15-14 overall and 4-2 in GNAC play.

The games were the first conference contests of the year for the Wolves, who are now 10-14 on the year and 1-1 in league play.

CCC Baseball: Concordia Blasts Corban, 13-3

With the loss, Corban falls to 10-16-1 overall, 4-9 in Region I play.

(SALEM) - corban logoJunior Jamie McGraw and senior Ryan Heil each collected a game-high three hits with McGraw scoring a run and the duo each knocking in a run, but Corban's baseball team fell to conference rival Concordia, 13-3, on Friday at Warrior Field.

Corban fell behind in the opening inning when Concordia's Cody Herrick grounded out to the Warriors' shortstop, thus allowing Kyle Waterland to score from third for the game's opening tally.

Two innings later, the Warrior got on the board and knotted the game at 1-all thanks to an RBI single to right field by Heil that scored McGraw from second.

CCC Softball: No. 13 Oregon Tech Takes Two From Corban

With the losses, Corban drops to 3-19-1 overall, 1-5 in CCC play.

(KLAMATH FALLS) - kevin player photoJunior Lindsay Batey hit a home run in each game of Friday's double header against the NAIA's No. 13-ranked Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech, but it was not enough as the Warriors dropped both games of the twin bill, 12-2 & 5-2, at the OIT Softball Complex.

In the opener of the double header, Corban found themselves down quickly as the host Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech scored four runs in the 1st and six more runs in the 2nd.

In the night cap, Corban got on the board first in the second inning when Batey hit her second home run of the day.

Pac-10 Women's Tennis: No. 24 Ducks Swept by No. 11 Bruins, 7-0

With the loss the Ducks fall to 11-6 on the year.

(EUGENE) - oregon tennis playerThe No. 24 Ducks battled throughout, but the No. 11 UCLA Bruins were just too much as they bested the Ducks 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center.

Sophomore Carmen Seremeta was the only Ducks to take her match to three sets.

Playing at the No. 3 position, the Cupertino, Calif. native overcame a first set loss to take the second set, but was ultimately defeated by No. 40 Tracy Lin (6-4, 4-6, 11-9) in a super tiebreak, since the team match was not in doubt.

Pac-10 Softball: No. 13 Oregon Opens Pac-10 Play with 4-3 Victory Over Cal

The Ducks face No. 11 Stanford on Saturday and Sunday.

(EUGENE) - oregon player photoDespite the dramatic finish, 13th-ranked Oregon opened up Pac-10 play with a 4-3 victory over visiting Cal on Friday afternoon at Howe Field.

With the win, the Ducks maintain their 14-game winning streak, 11-game undefeated mark at home, and improve to 35-3 on the year. But winning their first conference opener since 2004 wasn’t easy.

Oregon junior leftfielder Lovena Chaput torched a two-out, two run homer over the wall in right center to give the Ducks a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but Oregon watched that lead disappear as Cal (23-17) erased a three-run deficit in the top of the seventh.

After allowing just two hits through the first six innings, sophomore Melissa Rice ran into some trouble in the seventh.
