Patriots Take Series-Opener from Pilots

Portland avoids the shutout with a pair of runs in the ninth inning during a 13-2 Dallas Baptist win.

(PORTLAND) - pilots logoThe Dallas Baptist Patriots topped the Portland Pilots 13-2 in a non-conference baseball game Thursday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field.

The Pilots avoided the shutout with a two-run single by sophomore catcher Paul Crowder in the ninth inning.

Portland falls to 10-11 on the season, while Dallas Baptist improves to 14-11.

Brian Smith Selected as New Offensive Line Coach at PSU

(PORTLAND) - psu logoBrian Smith is the latest assistant football coach to be hired at Portland State University.

Head Coach Jerry Glanville announced Smith as his new offensive line coach as he rounds out his staff prior to the start of spring football.

Smith comes to Portland State after working as a graduate assistant at Oregon State in 2006.

No. 9 OSU Hosts Cal State Fullerton in Home Finale

The latest GymInfo rankings have three of OSU’s lineups ranked among the Top 10.

(CORVALLIS) - osu gymnasticsOregon State’s ninth-ranked gymnastics team makes its final home appearance of 2007 at Gill Coliseum Friday night when the Beavers host Cal State Fullerton.

The dual competition begins at 7:00 PM and will be conducted in traditional fashion with the competitors for the Beavers and Titans alternating.

The Beavers hosted the annual Salbasgeon Suites Invitational last weekend coming up just short in a comeback bid against No. 7 Utah.

Beavers Tsagarakis Earns Pac-10 Academic Honors

Tsagarakis made the Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention squad in 2005-06.

(CORVALLIS) - Angelo TsagarakisOregon State men’s basketball player Angelo Tsagarakis has earned Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic honors for the second time, as the league office announced the squad Thursday.

Tsagarakis was placed on the second team.

Tsagarakis, a junior guard from Auffreville, France, played in 28 games and started once for the Beavers in 2006-07. He averaged 9.8 minutes and 2.8 points per game.

Oregon's Eaton Leads Jim Click Decathlon After 1st Day

(TUCSON, Ariz. ) - oregon runnerFreshman Ashton Eaton led a trio of University of Oregon freshmen who made their collegiate multi-event debuts Thursday in first-day track and field action in the Jim Click Shootout decathlon and heptathlon.

The Bend, Ore., native Eaton led the decathlon at the halfway point with a score of 4,016 points, and was followed by post-collegian and former World Championships qualifier Paul Terek who stood second with 3,910 points after five events.

UO’s other entrant, freshman William Pua’a stood ninth with 2,975 points.

Wyoming Knocks Oregon Out of WNIT

Kaela Chapdelaine scored 12 points for Oregon, all on 3-pointers.

(LARAMIE, Wyo.) - oregon photoHanna Zavecz scored 18 points and Justyna Podziemska hit three big 3-pointers to lead Wyoming to a 64-62 victory over Oregon Thursday night in the third round of the WNIT.

The Cowgirls (24-9) will play at home Sunday against South Dakota State (26-5) in the quarterfinals — the farthest Wyoming has ever advanced in postseason play.

The Jackrabbits beat Indiana 60-53 on Thursday.

NCAA Tournament: UCLA Rolls Over Pittsburgh, 64-55, Into Elite Eight

UCLA will face #1 seed Kansas at 4:00 PM on Saturday.

(SAN JOSE) - ncaa logoThe way UCLA and Pittsburgh play tenacious defense, the best way to score is when the opponent can't contest the shot.

That's just what Arron Afflalo and the Bruins did. Afflalo made all 10 of his free throws and UCLA shot 23-for-26 from the line to knock off the Panthers 64-55 Thursday night in the West Regional semifinals.

The game between coaching buddies Ben Howland of the Bruins and Jamie Dixon of the Panthers was played in the style they employed in their years together at Northern Arizona and Pitt.

NCAA Tournament: Memphis Edges Texas A&M, 65-64, Headed To Elite Eight

Clutch free throw shooting lifts Tigers over Aggies, streak is pushed to 25 straight wins

(SAN ANTONIO) - ncaa logoAntonio Anderson isn't the player Memphis would have picked to go the line with a chance to advance to another NCAA regional final.

But there Anderson was, shooting free throws with 3.1 seconds left in a game in which he had already blown two open layups and missed three straight free throws.

Calipari and the rest of the Tigers felt drastically different after Anderson made both free throws to beat Texas A&M 65-64 on Thursday night and put Memphis in a regional final for the second year in a row.
