NWC Baseball: Bruins Hang On to Beat Pirates

(SPOKANE, Wash. ) - Relief pitcher Josh Burch tagged out one runner at the plate in the bottom of the 9th inning and catcher Ryan Fobert picked another off first base for the final out of the game, preserving a 5-4 win for the George Fox University Bruins over the Whitworth College Pirates in a Northwest Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Merkel Field.

The win improved the Bruins’ overall record to 15-1 and their conference record to 8-1, leaving them in a tie for first in the league with the University of Puget Sound, which swept a doubleheader from Lewis & Clark College Sunday.

The Pirates fell to 6-12 overall and 4-5 the conference.

Ueno and Lau Earn Co-Medalist Honors at Willamette Invitational

Linfield College took fourth at 723, Willamette was fifth at 734.

(WOODBURN) - Whitney Ueno from Willamette University and Emily Lau from the University of Puget Sound tied for medalist honors with 155 strokes over 36 holes, during the Willamette Invitational this weekend at the Oregon Golf Association Golf Course.

Ueno, who led by seven strokes with a 72 on the first day, shot 83 on the second day. Lau shot 79 on the first day, then carded a 76 over the final 18 holes on Sunday.

Puget Sound won the team title with a score of 686. Whitworth College finished second at 714 and was followed by Pacific University in third place with a score of 720.

GNAC Softball: Wolves Fall Twice at Humboldt State Tourney

Western Oregon drops games to HSU and Sonoma State.

(ARCATA, Calif.) - No. 9 nationally ranked Humboldt State raced to a 9-1 win over Western Oregon and Sonoma State won a 9-6 slugfest with the Wolves on the final day of the Al Cooper Tournament at the HSU Softball Field in Arcata on Sunday.

WOU, who split with the same two teams on Saturday, will return home with a 10-12 overall record.

Humboldt State pounded out 12 hits in the six inning contest in improving to 23-3 on the season in the 9-1 win.

NASCAR: Johnson Squeezes by Stewart to Win Kobalt Tools 500

Oregon's Mike Bliss finished 21.

(ATLANTA) - Salem-News.com SportsJimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart battled door-to-door in the waning laps of Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway until Johnson finally squeezed past Stewart to earn his second straight win.

Stewart surged to the high side, appearing to have enough steam to retake the lead when Johnson squeezed him, and Stewart scrubbed the wall.

It was enough to knock Stewart slightly off balance and allow Johnson, driving the No. 48 Lowe's/Kobalt Tools Chevrolet, to pull away for his second win at the fastest track in NASCAR.

NCAA Tournament: Oregon Fly's over Eagles and into Sweet 16

The third-seeded Ducks (28-7) will play seventh-seeded UNLV in the semifinals of the Midwest Regional in St. Louis.

(SPOKANE, Wash.) - So much for the little guys.

The ones from Winthrop, at least. There's one from Oregon still standing mighty tall in the NCAA tournament.

Diminutive but destructive Tajuan Porter, the shortest man on the floor at 5-foot-6, broke open a close game by making his first four shots of the second half Sunday, all from long range.

NCAA Tournament: Rush Leads Kansas into Sweet 16

Jayhawks shoot 63 percent from three-point land in victory.

(CHICAGO) - The University of Kansas (32-4) advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, defeating Kentucky, 88-76, Sunday afternoon in Chicago.

Sophomore Brandon Rush scored 19 points, including 6-of-7 from three-point range, and sophomore Julian Wright added a team-high 21 points in the win.

The Jayhawks will now head to San Jose to face Southern Illinois Thursday at 6:10 PM.

Texas star Kevin Durant's season came to an unceremonious close Sunday after an 87-68 thumping at the hands of surprising USC.

Nick Young led USC with 22 points in the runaway, which left Durant - the freshman front-runner for national player of the year - to decide whether to leave college for the NBA.

GNAC Baseball: Chico State Completes 4-Game Sweep of WOU

No. 5 nationally ranked Wildcats top Wolves 10-3 on Sunday.

(CHICO, Calif.) - Four Chico State pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Wildcats completed a four-game series sweep of Western Oregon with a 10-3 victory Sunday at Nettleton Stadium.

Starter Chris Bodishbaugh (3-1) allowed just three hits and two earned runs in five innings of work, and relievers Jason Gillard, Garrett Rieck, and Marcus Martinez combined on four hitless innings for the fifth-ranked Wildcats, now 23-5 on the season.

Western Oregon fell to 6-12 on the season.

NCAA Baseball: No. 5 Oregon State Completes Sweep of San Francisco

It was the third time this season that the Beavers have rallied to win a game in the eighth or ninth inning.

(CORVALLIS) - Salem-News.com SportsDrew George doubled home the tying run with two outs in the ninth inning, then scored the game-winner on Jordan Lennerton’s single as fifth-ranked Oregon State beat San Francisco 3-2 in non-conference baseball Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

The Beavers (20-3 overall) stretched their winning streak to a season-high nine games.

On Sunday, the Beavers completed a sweep of San Francisco (9-12), the defending West Coast Conference champion, after being limited to just one hit through eight innings by Don righthander Tommy Peale.
