Beavers Highly Represented at Oregon Sports Awards

There are five finalists for George Pasero Team of the Year Award, including the 2006 Beaver baseball, softball and football teams.

(CORVALLIS) - Oregon Beavers LogoOregon State University coaches, current student-athletes and former student-athletes dominate numerous categories for the 55th annual Oregon Sports Awards scheduled for Sun., Feb. 11th.

Three of the five finalists for the Slats Gill Sportsperson of the Year Award are Beaver coaches.

Pat Casey, who led the 2006 baseball team to the national title, is joined by fellow Beaver coaches Kirk Walker (softball) and Mike Riley (football).

Oregon Women Host UCLA, USC

UCLA has won seven of the past nine meetings and three out of the last four played at Mac Court.

(EUGENE) - The Oregon Ducks begin the final month of the regular season seeking revenge against the L.A. schools at Mac Court.

Oregon dropped a heartbreaking overtime decision at USC on Jan. 5th and surrendered a halftime lead before losing at UCLA on Jan. 7th.

The two opponents are currently riding hot streaks as the Women of Troy have won seven out of their last eight and the Bruins have strung together three straight victories.

Willamette Ready For Start of 2007 Baseball Season

(SALEM) - Willamette Bearcats logoThe 2007 Bearcats return a significant portion of their 2006 squad that featured a large number of underclassmen.

Returning senior starters Kelly Gilmore, Matt Rasmussen, and Grant Yamaguchi will lead a young group of players into the season.

Willamette will start three seniors, two juniors and four sophomores on the field to begin the season.

Western Oregon Men Head North to Alaska This Week

WOU’s Jacob Mitchell leads the Wolves with a 17.0 scoring average and 6.2 rebounds a game.

(MONMOUTH) - Western Oregon University - Wolves logoThe WOU Wolves will face one of the toughest tasks for any GNAC team this week, making the trip to Alaska to take on a pair of very tough conference contenders.

Up first will be Alaska Anchorage, who shut down the Wolves with suffocating defense (70-49) on Jan. 20th in Monmouth.

Alaska Fairbanks will be looking for revenge after falling 79-64 to WOU on Jan. 18th.

Western Oregon's Waechter up For Oregon Sports Awards Athlete of The Year

Other nominees in Waechter’s category include Corban College basketball player Eric Fiegi, Willamette runner Nick Symmonds, George Fox baseball player Derrick Jones and Concordia track and field standout Scott Halley.

The Oregon Sports Awards will celebrate the best in the state in 2006 with another glittering stage show at the Nike headquarters in Beaverton.

The event will honor the top athletes, coaches, teams, administrators and organizations from last year in the state of Oregon.

Oregon Native Stan Brock to Lead Army Football

Brock, 48, was a four-year letterman at the University of Colorado, serving as team captain during his senior season.

(WEST POINT, N.Y. ) - When Bobby Ross informed officials at the United States Military Academy of his decision to retire from coaching, Academy leadership wasted little time identifying the veteran field boss' successor.

On the same day in which Ross officially announced that he was leaving the coaching sidelines, United States Military Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Franklin L. Hagenbeck and Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson introduced Stan Brock as the Black Knights' new head football coach.

A member of Ross' original staff at the Academy, Brock has guided Army's offensive linemen each of the past three years and carries the experience of 16 years as a standout lineman in the NFL.

Bruins Hold Off Beacons, 73-68

Chris Parker led George Fox with 21 points.

(EUGENE) - Salem-News.com SportsNorthwest Christian College is in a must-win situation for the duration of the regular season after falling to George Fox University on Monday night, 73-68.

The Beacons now have to win all four of their final games in order to secure a spot in the USCAA National Championship Tournament.

In what was one of the closest any most fiercely contested games of the season, George Fox University was able to ice the victory at the charity stripe

MLB News: Bond, Giants Reach $15.8 Million One-Year Deal

Bonds trails Hank Aaron as baseball's all-time home run leader.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - Salem-News.com SportsThe San Francisco Giants announced Monday that Barry Bonds, the 14-year Giants veteran and seven-time National League Most Valuable Player, signed a one-year, $15.8 million deal with the Giants.

The lone member of the game's 500 home run-500 stolen base club, Bonds also ranks second in baseball history for extra-base hits (1,398), and fifth for RBIs (1,930).

Bonds has won an unprecedented seven Most Valuable Player awards and has been the runner-up twice.

Riggs, Kahne Fastest in First Day of NASCAR Preseason Thunder Las Vegas

(LAS VEGAS) - Scott Riggs and Kasey Kahne top the charts on the first day of of NASCAR Preseason Thunder at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Jimmie Johnson, defending NASCAR Nextel Cup Series champion and a two-time winner of LVMS' UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 turned in the eighth-fastest lap of the morning session (29.575 sec./182.587 mph.).

Tony Stewart, NASCAR's 2002 and 2005 Nextel Cup Series champion, was second-quickest in the first practice session (29.429 sec./183.492 mph).
