Former Oregon State Rower Wins Gold at Pan Am Games

(RIO DE JANEIRO) - Chris Callaghan photoFormer Oregon State rower Chris Callaghan won a gold medal at the Pan Am Games on Thursday helping the U.S. men’s eight with coxswain to victory by more than 10 seconds.

The crew rowed to a two-second lead in the first 500 meters of the race and continued to pull away from the competition for a 10.89-second victory.

The U.S. finished with a time of 6:22.47, followed by Brazil in 6:33.36 and Argentina in 6:39.03.

Sprague High Installing Artificial Turf at Olympic Stadium

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Olympic Stadium photoThe number of artificial turf fields in the Salem-Keizer School District is about to double.

Thanks to a massive fundraising effort by athletic boosters, Sprague High School has begun installing field turf at the school's Olympic Stadium.

The new field is slated to be ready in time for Sprague's first home football game September 7 against McMinnville.

Shane Jordan, Matthew Downs, Garret Baker and Rothford each had two hits for Salem-Keizer.

(PASCO, Wash.) - Volcanoes sports logoMaruis Loupadiere hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high five runs as host Tri-City held on for a 6-5 victory over Salem-Keizer on Friday.

Everth Cabrera led off the game with a walk and scored on Helder Velazquez's RBI double. After a pair of walks, Loupadiere connected for his fourth home run.

Thompson, Bears Stifle Emeralds

(YAKIMA, Wash. ) - eugene baseball logoBryant Thompson and two relievers combined on a three-hitter as Yakima edged visiting Eugene, 2-1, on Friday.

Thompson (2-3) allowed one run on two hits and three walks while striking out six over six innings to lower his ERA to 3.93.

Omar Arif gave up one hit in two scoreless frames and William Spottiswood fanned one in a perfect ninth for his third save.

NBA: Suns Trade Kurt Thomas to Seattle

Phoenix will send Seattle its own 2008 and 2010 first-round picks.

(PHOENIX, Ariz. ) - suns sports logoThe Phoenix Suns today traded center Kurt Thomas and two future first-round draft picks to the Seattle SuperSonics for a future conditional second-round pick.

In addition to salary cap relief, the trade leaves Phoenix with an $8 million trade exception for their use in future dealings.

Thomas, a 12-year NBA veteran, spent the last two seasons with the Suns after he was acquired from the New York Knicks on June 28, 2005.

Oregon State Football Assistant Jim Gilstrap Passes

Funeral services will be held Thurs., July 26.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Jim Gilstrap imageJim Gilstrap, Oregon State University football coordinator of support services, passed away Thursday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis from medical complications. He was 65.

Gilstrap was born May 11, 1942 in South Bend, Ind.

He devoted his entire professional life to the game of football and worked closely with current Oregon State head football coach Mike Riley for many years.

Gilstrap came to Oregon State for his first stint in 1997 with Riley as the offensive line coach.

At 753, suddenly Bonds is now two away from tying the Hammer's Major League Baseball career-best 755 and three away from passing him into first place on the all-time list.

Oregon Single-Game Football Tickets on Sale Friday

Tickets for the Sept. 8 contest at Michigan are sold out.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - oregon football photoSingle-game reserved tickets for all seven of the University of Oregon's 2007 homes games will go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, July 20, according to Director of Ticket Sales Garrett Klassy.

Reserved seats for home games vs. Houston (Sept. 1) and Fresno State (Sept. 15) are priced at $35 each, while tickets for Pacific-10 Conference games against California (Sept 29), Washington State (Oct. 13) and Arizona State (Nov. 3) are $47 each.

Only scattered single reserved seats remain for games vs. the Golden Bears and Cougars.

Cranston (1-0) yielded a hit and a walk with three strikeouts to lower his ERA to 1.06.

The 22-year-old left-hander retired the last 13 batters he faced after allowing a single and a walk with two outs in the first.
