Crosby Cleans Up at 2007 NHL Awards

Crosby said his 2006-07 performance was not about atonement for losing out on last year’s Calder; but, rather, a case of trying to be the best player he could be.

(TORONTO ) - nhl awards photoOne year after walking away from the NHL Awards Show gutted, Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby couldn’t stop smiling at this year’s end-of-season showcase.

Last year, Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin was the overwhelming choice as the winner of the Calder Trophy, awarded to the League’s best rookie.

Ovechkin beat Crosby by 444 points, including 124 first-place votes for Ovechkin to just four for Crosby.

Oregon State Goes Back in `Blatt

(OMAHA, Neb.) - osu baseball photoOregon State returned to Rosenblatt Stadium on Thursday, revisiting the site that many of the Beavers had last seen during the celebration of their 2006 national championship last June 26.

OSU, which opens the 2007 College World Series against Cal State-Fullerton on Saturday at 4 p.m. PDT, went through a workout and participated in an autograph session during the afternoon, then attended the opening ceremonies in the evening.

Freshman pitcher Jorge Reyes, who may get the nod to start the Beavers’ CWS opener, is one of those experiencing the hoopla for the first time.

Two Oregon Football Games Added to National TV Slate

The Ducks’ Nov. 15 game at Arizona will begin at 6 p.m. (PST) as part of the league’s new Thursday night package on ESPN.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - oregon football photoThe University of Oregon’s Sept. 8 football game at Michigan, as well as it’s Oct. 27 home game with USC, have been selected to be televised nationally, according to recent announcements by the Pac-10 Conference, ABC Sports and Fox Sports Net.

Kickoff for the Ducks’ home game with USC has been set for noon to accommodate a FSN telecast.

Oregon also is scheduled for a national ABC telecast when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., on Sept. 8, with the 12:30 p.m. (PDT) game currently slated to be the only college football game ABC Sports will air that day.

Oregon State's Doggett Named to Nagurski Watch List

The Beavers open the season Thurs., Aug. 30 against the Utah Utes at Reser Stadium.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - osu football photoOregon State University senior linebacker Derrick Doggett is one of 49 players on the 2007 Bronko Nagurski Watch List, the Football Writers Association has announced.

The Nagurski Award is presented to the nation’s top defensive player.

Doggett, a 6-3 215-pound native of San Diego, is a two-time Pac-10 Conference Second Team selection.

Oregon State's Johnson, Canham Earn Pac-10 Medals

Canham's efforts on the field have helped the defending national champion Beavers enter their third consecutive College World Series.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - osu softball photoSenior outfielder Natalie Johnson of the softball team and junior catcher Mitch Canham of the baseball team are Oregon State’s 2006-07 Pac-10 Conference Medal winners, as was announced by Commissioner Tom Hansen on Thursday.

A Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution’s outstanding senior female and male student-athlete based on the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.

Johnson was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic pick for the nationally ranked Beavers.

Spurs Sweep Cavs for Fourth NBA Title

Tony Parker finished with 24 points to become the first European-born player to earn the NBA Finals MVP Award.

(CLEVELAND) - spurs sports logoThe Spurs continued to cement their status as one of the NBA's dynasties as they used a 83-82 Game 4 win in Cleveland on Thursday to complete their sweep of the young Cavaliers and capture their fourth NBA title in nine years.

Manu Ginobili poured in 13 of his game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter, including six free throws in the final 24 seconds, to keep the charging Cavs at bay.

Cleveland had scored the first 11 points of the period, but needed Damon Jones' 3-pointer at the buzzer to produce the final one-point margin.

Silverton High Star Haley Roth Signs with Concordia

As a senior guard, Roth was recognized as first-team all-conference as well as being named conference MVP in basketball.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Concordia sports logoSilverton High School’s Haley Roth signed on to continue her education and play basketball for Concordia University, Cavalier head coach Aaron Christian announced yesterday.

Roth joins five other prep basketball standouts from Oregon and Washington as part of Concordia’s 2006-07 recruiting class.

Roth was a three-year letterwinner in basketball and volleyball at Silverton.

FSN Annouces Oregon State Football TV Schedule

Earlier announced contests that will air nationally on ABC or ESPN -- at Cincinnati (Sept. 6), at USC (Nov. 3) and at Oregon (Dec. 1).

(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - OSU Sammie Stroughter FSN Northwest, the regional television home of Oregon State University Athletics, has announced it will air the Aug. 30 season opener against the Utah Utes and the Sept. 15 game vs. the Idaho State Bengals, both from Reser Stadium in Corvallis.

In addition, FSN will air nationally the 91st edition of the Beavers and Washington Huskies from Corvallis on Nov. 10.

Utah and Oregon State represent two of the most successful bowl teams of late, with the Utes winning seven consecutive postseason games and the Beavers three.

Oregon State in Omaha to Defend National Championship

OSU (44-18 overall) opens the tournament against Cal State-Fullerton (38-23) on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. PDT.

(OMAHA, Neb.) - osu omaha photoAfter spending most of the day in transit, Oregon State’s base ball team arrived in Omaha on Wednesday evening to begin its third straight trip to the College World Series.

The Beavers – who earned a trip back to Rosenblatt Stadium to defend their 2006 national championship - were greeted at the airport by CWS officials and representatives of their hosts for their stay, the Omaha Kiwanis.

“It doesn’t get old at all,” said OSU pitcher Joe Paterson, who is making his second trip to the College World Series with the Beavers.
