Wolves Split with Warriors, Win Series

(TURLOCK, Calif.) - wolves logoWestern Oregon lost a slugfest in game one and then used effective pitching from freshman starter Mike Cusick in game two to gain a baseball split with Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday afternoon in Turlock.

The Warriors used an 8-run inning in the first game to outlast the Wolves 14-10, and then Cusick went five innings without giving up an earned run during a 3-2 WOU win in the nightcap.

With the split, Western Oregon won the series 3-1, and improved to 9-13 on the season. Cal State Stanislaus is now 14-13.

NWC Softball: Bearcat Pitching Stymies Bruins for Twinbill Sweep

The nightcap went only five innings because of the college eight-run rule after five.

(SALEM) - willamette logoCollecting only three hits in each game, the George Fox University Bruins could not muster enough offense and dropped a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader 7-0 and 9-1 to the Willamette University Bearcats Sunday afternoon at the WU softball field.

In the opener, Nikki Morrison had two of the three hits allowed by Willamette starter Nikki Franchi (4-2) in her six innings of work.

The Bearcat ace fanned 12 and walked only one, and was followed in the 7th inning by Casey Clark, who struck out three despite allowing two runners on a hit batsman and an error.

NCAA Tournament: Florida Ends Oregon's Run, Rematch With UCLA Next

Aaron Brooks led Oregon with 27 points, and Malik Hairston added 18 and five rebounds.

Joakim Noah and his buddies are heading back to the Final Four, looking for a second consecutive national championship that was worth more to them than NBA millions.

Lee Humphrey made seven 3-pointers and finished with 23 points and Taurean Green added 21 to lead the Gators to an 85-77 victory over third-seeded Oregon in the Midwest Regional final Sunday afternoon.

NASCAR: Kyle Busch Holds on to Win First NASCAR COT Race

The win for young Busch was his fourth on the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series circuit and the 200th win for his car owner, Hendrick Motorsports.

(BRISTOL, Tenn.) - kyle busch winsKyle Busch shook the monkey off his back Sunday and won NASCAR's first-ever Car of Tomorrow event in dramatic style.

Busch held off a hard-charging but gentlemanly Jeff Burton, who passed four-time champion Jeff Gordon for second place on the next-to-last lap following a green-white-checkered restart.

Burton's teammate Kevin Harvick was fourth behind Gordon and greg Biffle finished fifth.

NCAA Baseball: No.4 Oregon State's Win Streak Reaches 11

Joe Paterson earned the win to improve his record to 5-1 this season.

(CORVALLIS) - Joe PatersonOregon State pushed its baseball winning streak to 11 games Sunday afternoon, as the fourth-ranked Beavers beat Cal Poly 5-2 in a non-conference game at Baggett Stadium.

Joe Paterson and Eddie Kunz combined to pitch a five-hitter for OSU (22-3 overall).

On Sunday, the Beavers edged out to a 5-0 lead after five innings and then held off late-inning threats by Cal Poly.

NWC Baseball: Bearcats Split NWC Doubleheader Against Whitworth

The two teams will complete their three-game series Monday, with the first pitch set for noon.

(SALEM) - wu baseball kevin haysWillamette University jumped out to a 6-0 lead after six innings of play, then held on for a 7-4 victory over visiting Whitworth College in the second game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader on Sunday at John Lewis Field.

Whitworth, behind the pitching of Ryan Snell, won the first game, 9-3.

Willamette is now 9-11 overall and 3-7 in NWC action, while Whitworth is 7-13 overall, 5-6 in NWC play.

NCAA Softball: Vikings Shutout No. 13 Stanford, 3-0

Portland State will play at UC Davis on Monday.

(STANFORD, Calif. ) - Sophomore second baseman Jackie Heide hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and that was all junior right-hander Mandy Hill would need as Portland State shutout No. 13 Stanford 3-0 Sunday afternoon, in the Stanford Invitational II, played at the Smith Family Stadium.

Hill (11-12) limited the Cardinal (23-6) to five hits and one walk in earning the 40th win of her career.

She is just one of three pitchers in school history to record 40 career wins and 300 career strikeouts.

NCAA Softball: Oregon State Sweeps Idaho State

Senior pitcher Brianne McGowan (14-5) tossed a complete game one-hit shutout to improve her record on the season to 14-5.

(CORVALLIS) - osu softballJunior Cambria Miranda hit two home runs, including a walk-off shot to end the first game as the No. 16 ranked Oregon State softball team swept Sunday’s double-header against Idaho State by scores of 9-0 in five innings and 8-0 in six innings.

It was all Oregon State (24-10) as the Beavers pulled in front from the start in the opener.

Senior pitcher Brianne McGowan drove in a run and scored to give OSU the quick lead in the first inning.
