NCAA Basketball: Alford Tabbed as New Head Men's Basketball Coach at New Mexico

Alford, 42, has a 308-183 (63%) career record in 16 seasons as a collegiate head coach.

(ALBUQUERQUE, NM) - alford new mexicoUniversity of New Mexico Athletics Director Paul Krebs announced Friday that Steve Alford has been named the school’s 19th head men’s basketball coach.

Alford spent the past eight seasons as the head coach at the University of Iowa.

UNM and Alford have agreed on a six-year contract with total annual compensation of $975,000.

NWC Baseball: Bruins Edge Loggers Twice for Two-Game NWC Lead

The series concludes with a single game Sunday at noon.

(NEWBERG) - george fox logoBo Thunell drove in six runs in the first game, including the game-winner in the 10th inning, and Chris Albrecht struck out 12 in eight innings of work in the second game, leading the George Fox University Bruins to 8-7 and 6-5 wins over the University of Puget Sound Loggers in a Northwest Conference baseball showdown between the league co-leaders Saturday afternoon at Morse Field.

Both teams entered play with 8-1 records in conference, but George Fox improved to 17-1 overall, the Bruins’ best record ever after 18 games, and 10-1 in the league.

The Bruins now lead the Loggers by two games, while Lewis & Clark College and Pacific Lutheran University, which play each other this weekend, are three and three-and-a-half games out respectively.

GNAC Baseball: Wolves Take Two From Cal State Stanislaus

The two clubs will play another twinbill on Sunday at noon.

(TURLOCK, Calif.) - wolves logoWestern Oregon used the same storyline in a pair of wins on Saturday, topping Cal State Stanislaus 13-2 and 7-2 in a baseball doubleheader in Turlock.

The Wolves used big seven-run innings in each game to improve to 8-12 on the season, snapping a eight-game Warrior win streak in the process.

Cal State Stanislaus is now 13-12 in 2007.

Oregon Small College Softball Pitcher Tosses Perfect Game

(CLAREMONT, Calif. ) - miller photoLinfield’s Brittany Miller pitched a perfect game and Amanda Attleberger became the school’s all-time home run hitter as the No. 4 Wildcats posted consecutive shutouts of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a nonconference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Athena Field.

The Wildcats won 6-0 and 4-0 to raise their record to 12-2.

Miller faced the minimum 21 batters, fanning a season-high 12 without a walk. Meanwhile, Millers teammates spread around seven hits, including triple from Attleberger.

Vikings Split Saturday

(STANFORD, Calif. ) - psu logoJunior right-hander Mandy Hill went 2-for-4 with four RBI, including hitting a three-run home run and also earned the decision in Portland State’s 7-3 win over Long Beach State Saturday morning at the Stanford Invitational, played at the Smith Family Stadium on the campus of Stanford University.

Later in the day, UC Davis scored nine runs in the fourth inning en route to a 15-4 win over the Vikings in five innings.

Portland State (12-17) will conclude the three-day tournament with a game Sunday at noon against host No. 15 Stanford.
