NCAA Tournament East Region: Hansbrough Propels Tar Heels Into Sweet 16

UNC (30-6) will face the winner of Sunday's Texas-Southern California game.

(WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.) - Salem-News.com SportsTyler Hansbrough tossed away the mask protecting his broken nose and busted up Michigan State.

Top-seeded North Carolina sure did need its big man to fend off the Spartans.

The sophomore finished with 33 points and nine rebounds and Reyshawn Terry knocked down several key baskets down the stretch to help the Tar Heels hold off Michigan State 81-67 Saturday night in the East Regional.

NCAA Track and Field: Noble, Yurkovich Lead Ducks in Oregon Preview

On the men’s side, junior Michael McGrath cruised to the 1,500m win with his fastest time as a Duck (3:44.25).

(EUGENE) - The University of Oregon track and field teams successfully opened their outdoor season Saturday with 15 wins (6W, 9M), 10 regional qualifying marks (5W, 5M) and two women’s meet records in the Oregon Preview, held at historic Hayward Field on the UO campus.

Under nearly ideal, 66 and sunny weather conditions, the sophomore pair of Rachel Yurkovich and Rebekah Noble enjoyed meet records in front of a record crowd of 5,699 spectators that easily surpassed the previous record of 4,291 from last year.

Yurkovoich posted the second best javelin throw all-time for the Ducks on her first throw of the season (184-6).

NCAA Softball: #14 Oregon Sweeps Towson

Sophomore Melissa Rice pitched six innings on the mound and allowed just three hits en route to her 13th win of the year.

(EUGENE) - For the second straight day, the 14th-ranked Oregon softball team swept its opponent in a doubleheader at Howe Field, defeating Towson by scores of 9-0 and 8-0 on Saturday.

The Ducks have held their opponent scoreless in their last four games, while adding up 33 runs of their own.

Oregon is now 28-3 on the season, and like yesterday’s two victories over Utah State, the games against Towson ended early due to the eight-run rule.

NCAA Tournament East Region: Georgetown Powers Past BC, 62-55

Georgetown (28-6) faces Vanderbilt on Friday at East Rutherford, N.J.

(WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.) - Salem-News.com SportsBoston College's Jared Dudley and Jessie Sapp of Georgetown went up for a rebound and then went nose-to-nose, jawing at each other. Neither was about to back down.

It was like old times again for the former Big East rivals.

After they were separated and double technical fouls were called, the Hoyas asserted their dominance inside, and took another step toward their return to the top of college basketball.

NCAA Midwest Game Preview: #3 Oregon Ready to Fly with #11 Eagles

Oregon is now 10-7 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

(Spokane, Wash.) - Third-seeded Oregon will take on 11th seeded Winthrop in an NCAA Tournament Second Round game on Sunday, at 11:50 AM in Spokane, Wash.

The winner of that game earns a trip to the Sweet 16 in St. Louis, Mo.

On Friday, Winthrop's Craig Bradshaw and Torrell Martin combined for 44 Points to lead No. 11 Eagles to their first NCAA Tournament win, and upset over the No. 6 Fighting Irish 74-64.

GNAC Softball: Wolves Split Games at Al Cooper Tournament

Western Oregon falls to Lumberjacks, edge Seawolves.

(ARCATA, Calif.) - Whitney Lee singled home Shanley Young with the winning run in the sixth inning, giving Western Oregon a narrow 7-6 win over Sonoma State in the late game of the Al Cooper Tournament, hosted by Humboldt State.

The Wolves dropped their opening contest of the day to No. 9 nationally ranked Humboldt State, 9-3.

Sonoma State also lost to HSU (7-1).

NCAA Softball: Vikings Sweep South Dakota State

Portland State will return to action Friday when the Vikings face Ohio University and UC Davis at the Stanford Invitational.

(CORVALLIS) - Junior right-hander Mandy Hill recorded two wins in relief to lead Portland State to a pair of wins Saturday afternoon at OSU Softball Complex on the third day of the Cascade Clash.

The Vikings defeated Utah State 3-1 in eight innings and then edged South Dakota State 4-3 to finish the tournament with a 4-2 record.

In addition to picking up both wins, Hill went a combined 4-for-7 at the plate, including recording four RBI in the win over the Jackrabbits.

GNAC Baseball: Chico State Takes Two From WOU

No. 5 nationally ranked Chico State wins twice against Wolves, 4-0 & 9-3.

(CHICO, Calif.) - Chico State used shutout pitching in game one and then struck early offensively in game two to claim a doubleheader baseball sweep of Western Oregon on Saturday afternoon at Nettleton Stadium.

Billy Spottiswood fired a complete-game four hitter to lead the Wildcats to a 4-0 win in the opener, and the Chico State offense plated eight runs in the first three innings of a 9-3 win in the second game.

Chico State, currently ranked No. 5 in the nation, improved to 22-5 with the wins. The visiting Wolves fell to 6-11.
