(FOREST GROVE) - Never mind that Kapua Torres (Jr., Kahuku, Hawaii) never saw action on the mat last year. All raters needed to know is that she was back in action.
Torres has been ranked No. 1 among 51-kilogram wrestlers in the first North American Women's College Wrestling Poll of the season, released on Friday by USA Wrestling's Web site, TheMat.com.
As a team, the Boxers are ranked 10th on the 20-team poll, earning 53 of a possible 100 points.

(CORVALLIS) - The nine-game homestand finally comes to an end on Saturday when the Oregon State men’s basketball team (8-7, 0-2), striving for its first Pacific-10 Conference victory, hosts USC.
The Beavers didn’t leave home during the month of December, and the streak of nine consecutive home games equals the longest in school history (1949-50).
The Beavers are 55-60 all-time against the Trojans. USC won both games last year and has won three straight in the series.

(SEATTLE, Wash.) - Seattle University used a stifling defense and a deep bench to post a win in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball opener for both teams, 74-42 at the Connelly Center.
The victory improved Seattle’s overall record to 9-2 on the season, while WOU dropped to 1-11.
All 12 Seattle players scored in the ball game, led by the work off the bench of Ashley M. Brown who had 12.
WOU shot just 36 percent from the field and hit only one of 12 three-point attempts.

(CORVALLIS) - Oregon State won’t be easing into the New Year, wrestling-wise.
The Beavers (6-0 overall, 2-0 Pacific-10) head for the midwest to meet 17th-ranked Nebraska (6-0 overall, 0-0 Big XII) on Friday, then visit Northern Iowa (0-3) and also go against 18th-ranked Tennessee-Chattanooga (5-0, 1-0 Southern) on Sunday.
While OSU and Northern Iowa aren’t ranked, both received votes in this week’s National Wrestling Coaches Association poll.

(EUGENE) - Aaron Brooks’ 31 points wasn’t enough, as the USC Trojans handed the #16 Oregon Ducks their first defeat of the year, 84-82 Thursday night at McArthur Court.
Brooks was fouled behind the three point line with 1.4 left in regulation.
He made the first, but the second bounced out, ending the Ducks hope for a victory.
USC (12-4 overall, 2-1 Pac-10) was lead by Nick Young who had 19 points and 7 rebounds.
The nation’s top-ranked team, UCLA, visits McArthur Court for a Saturday morning showdown with Ducks.
Tip-off is set for 11:00 AM.

(BAKERSFIELD, Calif) - Sophomores Ronnie Lee and Ryan Dunn both picked up victories against the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners, but the hostile environment proved to be too much for the young Ducks as they fell 29-6 in the Pac-10 dual meet, held Tuesday night in the Icardo Center.
Junior Ryan Dunn would give the Ducks a bit of hope in the second match of the night, picking up the victory over Zack Bigboy, but the 4-3 score was as close as the Ducks would get all night.

Junior forward Leada Berkey (Amity) scored 30 points in the loss to Cal State Stanislaus, marking the third time this season that she has hit for 30 or more.

OSU’s nine-game homestand then comes to an end on Saturday with a televised game against USC.
