Hillyer's Mid-City Ford Classic Features National Powerhouses

Corban is 1-10 overall.

(SALEM) - On Friday and Saturday, the Capitol City will be rocking as the Hillyer's Mid-City Ford Classic will be taking place on the campus of Corban College featuring tournament-host Corban, NAIA Division I powerhouse Lewis-Clark State, NAIA Division II No. 2-ranked and undefeated Oregon Institute of Technology, and NCAA Division III member George Fox University.

Oregon Tech and George Fox will kick off the festivities on Friday beginning at 6:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center with OIT head coach Danny Miles going for career win No. 800.

In 36 years of coaching, Miles has accumulated an overall mark of 799-351. Last Saturday, OIT defeated Corban, 100-71, to put its head coach within a win of becoming the 10th coach all-time (among all divisions) to register 800 career victories.

Oregon Set to Jam Against Colorado

The Ducks are on a three game winning streak heading into the Papé Jam Saturday.

(EUGENE) - The Ducks (5-1) participate in the ninth annual Papé Jam at Portland’s Rose Garden Arena and take on Colorado (5-3).

The game, which is the second half of a doubleheader with the men’s team, tips off at 3:00 PM and will be televised on the Oregon Sports Network (OSN).

The Papé Jam may need to be renamed Oregon’s Annual Holiday Blowout as the Ducks have an average margin of victory of 23 points in going 8-0 all-time at the event.

Eagles Hang On for Down-to-the-Wire Win Over Bruins

George Fox (4-3) takes on the Oregon Institute of Technology Friday at 6:00 PM in the Hillyers Mid-City Ford Classic at Corban College in Salem.

(KIRKLAND, Wash.) - Phil Heu-WellerDespite surrendering all by one point of a 12-point lead with 10 minutes left, the Northwest University Eagles managed to hang on for a 72-68 win over the visiting George Fox University Bruins in a down-to-the-wire non-conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night here at the Northwest Pavilion.

With Phil Heu-Weller opening up on fire, the Bruins jumped out to a 17-10 lead 10 minutes into the game. Heu-Weller scored the Bruins’ first 11 points, including three three-pointers, and 15 of the 17, but left the game with his second personal foul with 9:26 to play.

The Eagles then went on a 14-0 run, capped by a three-point play by Aaron Sawyer, to take a 24-17 lead with 3:05 remaining.

Corban Rips Willamette, 74-53

Corban swept the season series, after also defeating the Bearcats 71-62 on Nov. 21st.

(SALEM) - Brianne CarrasCorban College held a 19-16 lead over Willamette University with 8:33 left in the first half, but scored the next 15 points on its way to a 25-2 run, as the Warriors took a huge halftime lead on their way to a 74-53 victory over the Bearcats.

Willamette outscored the Warriors 35-33 in the second half, but never got closer than 17 points.

Corban improved to 6-4 overall, while the Bearcats, playing their first home game of the season, dropped to 0-8

Western Oregon Nips Corban in OT, 97-96

WOU had five other players in doubles figures: Schmidt with 19, Jacob Mitchell with 17 and nine rebounds, Travis Kuhns, Mike McLaughlin and Dominque DeWeese with 11.

(SALEM) - Western Oregon spent most of Tuesday night trying to hold on to a lead, and then battled through an overtime period where they mostly trailed, finally topping Corban College 97-96 in a men’s non-conference basketball contest at CE Jeffers Sports Center.

Ryan Schmidt scored on a fast break basket with just seven seconds left on a dish from Alex Swerzbin to give the Wolves the one-point win.

WOU moved to 1-2 on the season, while Corban dropped its sixth straight to fall to 1-10

Oregon State Adds Second Gymnast for 2008

A Junior Olympic national qualifier in 2004, 2005 and 2006, Bigelow tied for eighth in the All-Around and finished second on the floor exercise at the Region I Level 10 Championships.

(CORVALLIS) - Three-time Junior Olympic national qualifier Jereme Bigelow has agreed to attend Oregon State University and compete for the Beavers’ gymnastics team announced head coach Tanya Chaplin, Tuesday.

Bigelow (San Francisco, Calif./International HS), who trains at Airborne Gymnastics under coaches Mel Ruggiero, Justin Howell and Milo Johnson, will join the Beavers in the fall of 2007.

“We are really excited that Jereme has chosen to pursue her academic and athletic goals at Oregon State,” said head coach Tanya Chaplin.

Beavers Moore Named Pac-10 Player of The Week

OSU safety Sabby Piscitelli and kick returner Gerard Lawson of Oregon State were also nominated for awards.

(WALNUT CREEK, Calif.) - photo of Quarterback Matt Moore of Oregon StateQuarterback Matt Moore of Oregon State, linebacker Christian Taylor of UCLA and kicker Tom Schneider of California have been named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Football Players of the Week.

Moore, a senior from Valencia, Calif., led Oregon State to an upset road win against No. 24-ranked Hawaii.

Moore completed 11 of 17 passes (.647) for 245 yards, an average of 22.3 yards per completion, and three touchdowns of 21, 30 and 80 yards with no interceptions.

Bearcat Football Announces Team Award Winners

The Bearcats finished the 2006 campaign with a 2-7 record, for their first losing season since 2001 and just the third losing season at Willamette during the past 14 years.

(SALEM) - Bearcat fansNine players were honored on Sunday at the Willamette University football team's end-of-the-year banquet.

Taking home the team’s Most Valuable Player Award was senior flanker Ryan Hernandez (Portland, OR/Portland Christian HS). Hernandez, who was one of the Bearcats’ three First Team All-Northwest Conference selections this year, led Willamette in rushing with 589 yards on 85 carries (6.9 avg.), which was good for third best in the conference.

He scored five rushing touchdowns and also earned 183 yards and three touchdowns on 12 receptions. Hernandez concluded his Willamette career with 1,474 rushing yards on 208 carries (7.1 avg.).

Tracy Smith Announces Resignation From Corban

In her nineteen year collegiate coaching career, Smith has accumulated an overall record of 273-302.

(SALEM) - photo: Corban head volleyball coach Tracy SmithCorban head women's volleyball coach Tracy Smith announced her resignation as head women's volleyball coach Monday following seventeen seasons at the helm of the Warriors.

Smith, along with her family, will be entering the ministry full-time with Athletes in Action (AIA), a ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ, at the headquarters located in Xenia, Ohio.

Smith will be assisting her husband, Tim, as the sports director over men's and women's volleyball.
