OSU Men’s Soccer Pounds Trinity Western, 5-1, in Exhibition Game

(CORVALLIS) - OSU LogoJunior forward Nick Webb had three goals and an assist to lead the Oregon State men’s soccer team to a 5-1 victory over Trinity Western in an exhibition game at Lorenz Field on Friday night.

“I think there’s been a following through with what we’ve been teaching,” OSU Coach Dana Taylor said. “I was pleased with the energy the guys brought tonight. The guys capitalized on our opponents’ mistakes.”

Ducks Annual Fan Day Set for Saturday, August 26th

(EUGENE) - The University of Oregon Athletic Department will conduct 2006 "Fan Day" on Saturday, August 26th.

The annual event, which runs from 10:00 AM to noon, and allows fans to meet and greet players and coaches from this year's football, soccer, volleyball teams.

It will again be held inside the Moshofsky Center, adjacent to Autzen Stadium.

Fans can park in the East Lot of Autzen. Entries 2 and 5 will be available with the lot opening at 9:00 AM.

Gray Elevated to Ducks' Senior Associate AD

(EUGENE) - Gary Gray, who has overseen the areas of academics and compliance of NCAA and Pacific-10 Conference rules within the athletics department at the University of Oregon for the last 13 years, has been elevated to the position of senior associate athletics director at the school, according to Director of Athletics Bill Moos.

Gray, who first joined the Ducks administration as assistant coordinator of academic services in 1984, has epitomized the emphasis that Oregon has placed on its academic progress of its athletes as he was promoted to assistant athletics director in 1990 and associate athletics director in 1997.

Lee Lights up Back Nine; Leads Safeway Classic

(PORTLAND) - Jee Young LeeJee Young Lee, fresh off a season-best fifth-place finish at the CN Canadian Women's Open, took the early lead at the Safeway Classic Presented by Pepsi with an 8-under-par 64.

Her round included seven-consecutive birdies on holes 10 through 16, which ties a season record set by Juli Inkster at the LPGA Takefuji Classic.

Lee's first-round 64 is her career-low on the LPGA Tour since earning her membership with a victory at the 2005 CJ Nine Bridges Classic Presented by Sports Today last November.

Experienced, Healthier Wolves Will be Better in 2006

(SALEM) - 22 healthy players began workouts for the Western Oregon women’s soccer team in mid-August 2006, and if that sounds like a routine beginning than you weren’t around for the 2005 finale of the Wolves season.

WOU’s bench often had more players in street clothes than in uniform when the Wolves battled to an 8-12 overall record and a 5-7 finish in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. More than once, only one or two bench players were available to coach Rod Fretz, and that is a recipe for disaster in the rough and tumble world of collegiate soccer.

Willamette Seeks Fifth Consecutive Winning Season

(SALEM) - For the Willamette University football team, the 2006 season is an opportunity to achieve the Bearcats’ fifth consecutive winning season.

Willamette’s efforts on the gridiron have led to a 25-15 overall record the past four years and the Bearcats have finished above .500 eight times during the past 10 seasons.

The team highlighted the decade with a 13-1 record and a trip to the NCAA Division III Championship game in 1997.

Volcanoes Win 10th Straight, Down Dust Devils 7-1

(PASCO, WA) - Steven Calcutt and three relievers combined on a three-hitter as visiting Salem-Keizer shut down Tri-City, 7-1, for its 10th straight win on Thursday.

Mike McBryde went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Christopher Todd had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.

McBryde tripled home two runs off Tri-City starter Aneury Rodriguez (3-3) in a three-run third to give the Volcanoes a 4-1 lead.

Willamette Football Players Are Ready to Help United Way With Days of Caring

(SALEM) - The Willamette University football team will provide plenty of man-hours on Saturday when more than 100 Bearcats will participate in the Days of Caring, sponsored by the United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley.

The Bearcats and other groups will help with cleaning, updating and enhancing the buildings and surrounding landscapes used by area charities.

Head Coach Mark Speckman and the Willamette football team are ready to field approximately 10 teams of 10 players each. Willamette’s players will be volunteering their efforts from about 8:30 AM until noon.

OSU Men’s Soccer Wins Exhibition Opener vs. Simon Fraser, 3-0

(CORVALLIS) - Playing under lights for the first time, the Oregon State men’s soccer team defeated visiting Simon Fraser, 3-0, in an exhibition game on Tuesday night at Lorenz Field.

Corvallis’ own Justin Woodward (Corvallis HS) scored in his Beaver debut, as the freshman opened the scoring in the 40th minute. Sophomore Robby Christner (Springfield, Ore./Thurston HS) and freshman Jordan Harris (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle HS) scored in the 72nd and 77th minutes, respectively.

“It was exciting to play under the lights for the first time,” OSU Coach Dana Taylor said.
