NBA: Carlesimo Takes Helm of Sonics

Carlesimo served six seasons as an NBA head coach with Portland Trail Blazers (1994-97) and the Golden State Warriors (1997 – 2000).

(SEATTLE) - Sonics Carlesimo photo P.J. Carlesimo is the new coach of the Seattle SuperSonics, Sonics General Manager Sam Presti announced Thursday.

He gets right to work, immediately heading to Las Vegas where Sonics players and coaches are preparing for NBA Summer League play.

Carlesimo joined the staff of the San Antonio Spurs in 2002 as lead assistant to Gregg Popovich. During his five years in San Antonio, the Spurs won three NBA titles.

Researchers Call for Aggressive Health Screening of Female Athletes

The researchers’ goal is to help prevent and treat problems before permanent damage is done.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - willamette university softballCoaches, doctors and parents need to heed the signs and symptoms of what researchers call the “Female Athlete Triad” – inadequate food intake, menstrual disruption and low bone density.

In a paper scheduled for fall publication in the Journal of Sports Science, Oregon State University Professor Melinda Manore and two co-authors – OSU doctoral student Lynn Cialdella Kam and Ohio University Professor Anne B. Loucks – call for comprehensive screening of athletes and active females to detect energy deficits and eating disorders, as well as wider education about a syndrome that too often goes undetected.

Sonics Sign Draft Picks Durant and Green

In three years at Georgetown University, Green averaged 13.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

(SEATTLE) - Sonics basketball logoThe Seattle SuperSonics have announced that they have signed 2007 NBA Draft selections Kevin Durant and Jeff Green.

Durant was the second overall selection in the draft by the Sonics.

Green, the fifth overall selection, was acquired in a trade with the Boston Celtics.

Kellen Kulbacki homered and drove in two runs.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - eugene baseball logoGreg Riddoch became Eugene's all-time winningest manager as the Emeralds edged visiting Yakima, 3-2, on Monday.

Riddoch moved past Hugh Luby with his 236th victory.

He managed Eugene for five seasons in the late 1970s and early '80s before holding various jobs in the Major Leagues.

Portland also signed Finnish guard Petteri Koponen, Duke forward Josh McRoberts and Florida guard Taurean Green.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - Petteri Koponen photoThe Portland Trail Blazers have come to terms with four players selected in last week’s NBA Draft including center Greg Oden, the No. 1 overall selection.

Terms of Oden’s deal were not disclosed, but according to the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, Oden’s contract will be for two years, with the Trail Blazers having the right to pick up options for years three and four.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Dan Spencer photoDan Spencer has resigned as associate head coach on Oregon State’s baseball staff to accept a similar position at Texas Tech, OSU head coach Pat Casey announced Monday.

Spencer played for the Red Raiders under current head coach Larry Hays, and the position at Texas Tech comes with the possibility that Spencer could be elevated to head coach whenever Hays may step down.

The Beavers had one open scholarship remaining.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - osu sports logoOregon State men’s basketball head coach Jay John announced the signing of Sean Carter, a 6-foot-9, 225-pound forward/center from Fayetteville, N.C., to a financial aid agreement on Monday.

Carter attended his senior year at Laurinburg (N.C.) Prep, where he averaged approximately 12 points and six rebounds this past season.
