Cubs Ship Barrett to San Diego

Cubs send catcher Michael Barrett and cash to the Padres for catcher Rob Bowen and Minor League outfielder Kyler Burke.

(CHICAGO) - cubs sports logoThe Chicago Cubs today acquired catcher Rob Bowen and Minor League outfielder Kyler Burke from the San Diego Padres for catcher Michael Barrett and cash.

Bowen is traveling to Arlington, Texas today and is expected to be in uniform for the Cubs for tonight's contest against the Rangers at 7:35 p.m. CT.

The 26-year-old Bowen is batting .268 with eight doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI in 30 games for the Padres this season.

MLB: Alex Rodriguez Nears Two Million All-Star Votes

Guerrero, Ramirez, Ichiro headline outfield in AL balloting results.

(NEW YORK ) - all star game logoVladimir Guerrero of the Angels, Manny Ramirez of the Red Sox and Ichiro Suzuki of the Mariners remain the American League's leading outfielders, with Magglio Ordoñez of the Tigers running a close fourth in American League balloting results for the 78th All-Star Game, to be played Tuesday, July 10th at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

Guerrero (.329, 12 HR, 62 RBI) is the A.L.'s leading outfielder in balloting with 1,541,241 votes, followed by Ramirez (1,098,497) and Suzuki (1,048,781).

Eugene Emeralds Win Season Opener at Spokane, 6-2

Starting pitcher Fabio Castillo picked up the loss for the Indians, giving up five runs over five innings pitched.

(SPOKANE, Wash. ) - Eugene Emeralds logoA sold out crowd of 7,066 was on hand during the Spokane Indians season opener against the Eugene Emeralds on June 19th.

And despite a 6-2 loss for the home team, fans still had a lot to cheer about with the dedication of the new Rim of Honor that celebrated some of the most important individuals in the Indians 104-year history, and a post-game fireworks show that was a definite wow.

Eugene utilized a five-run inning in the top of second and the Indians answered right back in the bottom of the frame.

Ninth Inning Homer Lifts Salem-Keizer Volcanoes over Boise

Salem-Keizer reliever Andy De La Garza got the win with two shutout innings.

(BOISE, Idaho ) - volcanoes sports logoSalem-Keizer catcher Tyler LaTorre launched a long home run off of John Muller in the ninth inning Tuesday night to lead the Volcanoes to a come-from-behind 5-4 win over the Boise Hawks in the season opener.

Hawks lead off hitter Jonathan Wyatt hit a three-run home run in the third inning to give the Hawks the first lead in the game.

After the Volcanoes got two in the third inning off Boise starter Al Alburquerque, Dylan Johnston tripled in a run in the fifth for Boise ’s fourth run.

Oregon State Sees Two Familiar Faces in Omaha

Oregon State plays U-C Irvine on Wednesday at 4 p.m. PDT.

Gunderson, now pitching for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the Carolina League, got a phone call from his former Oregon State baseball teammate and Buck, now pitching for the Visalia Oaks in the California League, a few minutes after the Beavers qualified for their third straight College World Series appearance.

So, after flying into Omaha on Monday, two of the heroes of OSU’s 2006 national championship were on hand for OSU’s 12-6 win over Arizona State on Monday night.

Salem, Springfield High School Soccer Stars Sign with Corban

Anderson was a member of the South Salem boys' soccer team that advanced to the 6A state semifinals this past season and was named honorable mention All-Central Valley Conference.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - corban sports logoA pair of high school seniors -- David Anderson (Salem, Ore.) from nearby South Salem High School and Travis Wells (Springfield, Ore.) from Thurston High School -- have inked Letters of Intent to play men's soccer for second-year head coach Dave Irby and run track for second-year head coach Norm Berney next season.

So far this summer, Irby has signed four men's soccer players for next season, while this is the first official signings for the track program at Corban heading into its second year of existence.

The series will begin with the 2A game at 1:30 p.m. and conclude with the 6A contest at 8:00 p.m. on each day.

The Oregon Athletic Coaches Association (OACA) All-Star Summer Basketball Series is scheduled for Friday, June 22nd, at fellow Cascade Collegiate Conference member Northwest Christian and Saturday, June 23rd, at Clackamas Community College.

Indiana Football Coach Terry Hoeppner Passes Away

Hoeppner was named IU's 26th head football coach on December 17, 2004.

(BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ) - Terry Hoeppner photoIndiana University football coach Terry Hoeppner, 59, passed away Tuesday morning at 6:50 a.m. at Bloomington Hospital following a lengthy illness.

"Coach died due to complications from the brain tumor for which he had been treated surgically and therapeutically over the past 18 months, " said Indiana University team physician Dr. Larry Rink. "His family was at his side."

In just his second season at the helm of the Hoosier program, Hoeppner brought the Hoosiers on the brink of a bowl appearance in 2006.

Oregon State's Jones Skips NBA, Back in Corvallis

Because he did not hire an agent and paid his own way, Jones remains fully eligible under NCAA rules.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Marcel Jones photoMarcel Jones of the Oregon State men’s basketball team has withdrawn his name from NBA Draft consideration and is back in Corvallis for the start of summer school, he announced Monday.

As Oregon State’s only senior in 2007-08, he is looking forward to taking on a bigger leadership role and helping OSU make a move back up the Pac-10 standings.

With this experience behind him and a big year ahead of him, Jones believes he will be a top draft prospect in 2008
