Pac-10 Softball: Early Home Runs Lift No. 14 UCLA Past No. 10 Oregon

The Bruins built their lead to three runs on a two-run homer.

(EUGENE) - oregon player photoTwo early home runs for UCLA led the 14th-ranked Bruins to a 5-1 victory over 10th-ranked Oregon on Sunday afternoon at Howe Field.

Oregon, now on a three-game losing streak – its longest of the year, falls to 37-8 on the year and 3-5 in the Pac-10 Conference. UCLA improves to 28-11 and 4-4 in the Pac-10.

For the second straight day UCLA was able to take an early lead in the top of the first.

PCL: Palmer Too Much for Beavers Sunday

Trailing 6-0, the Beavers (4-7) finally broke through against Palmer in the seventh.

(PORTLAND) - portland beavers logoMatt Palmer turned in seven strong innings for his first win of the season, and the Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Portland Beavers 6-1 Sunday afternoon at PGE Park.

Palmer (1-0), who took a no-decision in Fresno’s season-opening victory over the Beavers on April 5th, limited Portland to just one hit over the first six innings.

The right-hander issued two walks and struck out four to get his first win of the season.

WCC Baseball: Pilots Fall to No. 21 San Diego

The Toreros jumped out early and didn’t look back.

(SAN DIEGO) - portland logoNo. 21 San Diego completed a three-game sweep of the Portland baseball team, topping the Pilots 10-2 on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, Portland drops to 14-20 overall (2-7 West Coast Conference) while the Toreros go to 29-13 (7-2 WCC).

San Diego pitching stymied the Pilots for much of the game, with Matt Couch (6-2) picking up the win, allowing five hits and two runs over six innings.

PCSC: Vikings, Gaels Split Sunday

Portland State (18-26, 3-4 PCSC) will return to action Wednesday with a non-conference game at No. 10 Oregon Wednesday.

(MORAGA, Calif. ) - psu logoPortland State and Saint Mary’s split a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Cottrell Field, with the Vikings winning game one 6-0 and the Gaels taking the nightcap 11-1 in six innings.

Saint Mary’s won the series 3-1 after sweeping Saturday’s twinbill.

Junior right-hander Mandy Hill (16-15) pitched a six- hit shutout, striking out seven in the Vikings’ game one victory.

NWC Baseball: Willamette Rallies to Defeat Linfield, 9-8

Gilmore belts 3-Run homer in 7th; Rasmussen hits 2-RBI single in ninth.

(McMINNVILLE, Ore.) - willamette logoWillamette University rallied from a 7-1 deficit after five innings to tie the game at 7-7 with six runs in the top of the seventh, then overcame a one-run deficit in the ninth, to defeat Linfield College, 9-8, in a Northwest Conference game on Sunday.

Linfield took an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the eighth, before the Bearcats scored the tying and winning runs in their final at bat.

WU improved to 14-18 on the season, 7-13 in the NWC.

NWC Softball: Home Runs Rain on Bruins

Both contests were shortened to five innings by the eight-run rule.

(McMINNVILLE, Ore. ) - linfield softball playerThird-ranked Linfield battered George Fox pitchers for three home runs and 25 hits during a rapid doubleheader sweep Sunday at the Linfield diamond.

The Wildcats pushed their current winning streak to 12 games, winning 9-1 and 12-0.

George Fox saw its season record dip to 5-25 and 3-19 in league play.

Linfield's Wheeler Wins Individual NWC Title

Puget Sound won the team title at the NWC Championships.

(SISTERS, Ore. ) - linfield womens golfLeslie Wheeler extended her lead in the final round of the Northwest Conference Womens’s Golf Championships on Sunday and was the individual medalist by seven strokes at Aspen Lakes Golf Course.

Wheeler fired a second-round 79 to finish a 156 two-day total.

Emily Lau of Puget Sound and Whitney Ueno of Willamette tied with 36-hole totals of 163.

NWC Softball: Willamette, Puget Sound Split NWC Doubleheader

Molly Barnes was was 4 for 7 during the doubleheader for Willamette.

(SALEM) - wu softball k_hSophomore pitcher Nikki Franchi allowed just three hits and struck out 10 batters, leading Willamette University to a 2-0 victory over the University of Puget Sound in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader at the WU Softball Field.

In the second game, UPS plated five runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie, as the Loggers claimed a 6-1 win.

Willamette ended the doubleheader with a 15-10 overall record, 9-7 in the NWC. Puget Sound moved to 17-13 overall, 6-12 in the NWC.

PCL: Cust, Germano Guide Beavers to Second Straight Win

The Beavers play host to the Grizzlies again Sunday at PGE Park.

(PORTLAND) - portland beavers logoJack Cust hit two home runs and Justin Germano gave up one unearned run in seven innings of work as the Portland Beavers defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 6-1 Saturday afternoon at PGE Park.

Vince Sinisi had three this, including his first Triple-A home run, and Craig Stansberry was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI for the Beavers, who won two straight for the first time this season.

It was the second strong outing for Germano, who gave up three hits and struck out three.
