Willamette Men Rout PLU, 90-67

The Bearcats built a 21-point first half lead.

(SALEM) - Junior post Ian Mansfield scored 16 points to lead five Willamette University players in double figures, as the Bearcats routed visiting Pacific Lutheran University, 90-67, on Saturday at Cone Field House.

Willamette held a 43-22 halftime lead and remained in front by more than 20 points for most of the second half.

The Bearcats improved to 9-10 overall, while evening their Northwest Conference record at 5-5. Pacific Lutheran fell to 7-10 overall, 4-6 in the NWC.

Willamette Women Fall to PLU, 58-42

Willamette’s Keilyn Fujioka scores 14 of her 16 points in second half.

(SALEM) - Nikki Johnson scored 19 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead Pacific Lutheran University to a 58-42 win over Northwest Conference rival Willamette University, on Saturday at Cone Field House.

PLU upped its record to 11-7 overall and 6-4 in NWC play, while Willamette falls to 4-15 overall, 2-8 in the NWC.

Pacific Lutheran held a 27-11 lead at halftime, then increased its margin to as many as 28 points in the second half.

MLB News: Cubs Sign Hometown Boy Cliff Floyd

A graduate of Thornwood High School in South Holland, Ill., Floyd was named the Chicago Tribune's Athlete of the Year in 1991.

(CHICAGO) - Salem-News.com logoThe Chicago Cubs announced Wednesday that the club has agreed to terms with outfielder and first baseman Cliff Floyd on a one-year deal with a mutual option for the 2008 season.

Floyd, 34, owns a .279 career batting average (1,331-for-4,775) with 317 doubles, 213 home runs and 781 RBI in 1,423 Major League contests with Montreal (1993-1996, 2002), Florida (1997-2002), Boston (2002) and the New York Mets (2003-2006).

He is one of just 15 active left-handed hitters to amass over 200 career long balls and 300 career doubles

Western Oregon Baseball Ranked No.10

WOU went 20-4 last spring in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play in running to its sixth consecutive league crown.

(MONMOUTH) - The Western Oregon baseball team, seeking a seventh consecutive conference title and third straight NCAA regional berth, is ranked tenth nationally in the NCAA Division II National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association poll, released Wednesday.

The Wolves, who finished 40-16 last season and earned the No. 1 seed in the west region tournament, is also ranked second in the NCBWA west region poll.

Defending region champ Chico State is first, and the Wildcats are ranked second in the national poll.

Oregon State Softball Ranked No. 6 in Pre-Season Poll

Oregon State opens the 2007 campaign at the San Diego State Tournament on Feb. 8th-11th.

(STARKVILLE, Miss.) - Oregon State University’s softball team enters the 2007 season with a No. 6 national ranking in the USA Today/NFCA Preseason Top 25 poll released on Wednesday by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

The ranking is the highest for the Beavers to start a season in program history.

OSU ascended to a program-best No. 5 national ranking in May of 2006.

(CONCORD, N.C.) - Sprint Nextel and NASCAR unveiled several enhancements to the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Pit Crew Challenge presented by Craftsman and NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge.

The NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge’s new format consists of four, 20-lap segments and features teams that qualify for the event by winning a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series event during the 2006 or 2007 seasons.

Additionally, two drivers will qualify for the premier event by finishing first and second, respectively, after two 20-lap segments in the NEXTEL Open.

Marathon Oil Extends Contract With Petty Enterprises

The company will sponsor the #45 Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil Dodge driven by Kyle Petty.

(FINDLAY, Ohio) - Marathon Oil Corporation, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Marathon Petroleum Company LLC, has announced that the company has signed a two-year contract with Petty Enterprises LLC.

The contract, covering the 2007 and 2008 NASCAR racing seasons, sponsors the #45 Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil Dodge driven by Kyle Petty.

NFL, Players Union Reach Drug Testing Deal

The NFL Youth Football Fund, jointly endowed by the NFL and NFLPA, also recently approved a $1.2 million steroids education grant to the Center for Health Promotion Research at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon.

(NEW YORK) - The National Football League and NFL Players Association have reached agreement on a series of improvements to their policy and program on anabolic steroids and related substances, it was announced Wednesday.

The modifications include a 40 percent increase in the number of players randomly tested each week during the preseason, regular season and post-season from seven to 10 per team.

Last year, the number of random offseason tests was increased from a maximum of two per player to six per player.
