Salem-News.com Sports (May 15, 2006 22:24)Soccer: Cheek's Second-Half Goal Propels Surge Salem-News.com SPORTS(TACOMA, Wash.) - Chris Chapman found Ryan Cheek wide open in front of the goal, and Cheek made the most of the opportunity Saturday to give the Cascade Surge a 1-0 win against Tacoma FC.
Tacoma FC controlled the play in the first half, and Surge goalkeepers Steve Reese and Brett Bentley were forced to make several saves to keep their team in the game.
Cascade started the second half strong, and in the 57th minute Chapman ran on to a long ball in the right corner and then crossed to Cheek, who finished with ease for the eventual winning goal.

Salem-News.com Sports (May 15, 2006 22:12)Voters to Decide Tax to Support Proposed Speedway Complex Salem-News.com SPORTS(BOARDMAN – AP) - Voters in Morrow County will decide a tax measure tomorrow that could lead to construction of a motor speedway in Eastern Oregon -- and races by 2008.
The proposed eight percent tax would be charged against tickets and goods and services within a special raceway district.
The proceeds would be used to pay for roads and utilities for the 300 million dollar track, which has been in the works for several years and is in its second incarnation.

Salem-News.com Sports (May 15, 2006 13:28)3rd Member of Duke Lacrosse Team Indicted By AARON BEARD, Associated Press Writer(DURHAM, N.C.)) - A grand jury indicted a third member of Duke University's lacrosse team Monday on charges stemming from a woman's allegations she was raped and beaten at a team party earlier this year.
David Evans, a 23-year-old senior and team co-captain from Bethesda, Md., was indicted on charges of rape, sexual offense and kidnapping. Two other players were indicted on the same charges last month.
"I am absolutely innocent of all the charges brought against me," Evans said outside the Durham County magistrate's office Monday afternoon. "These allegations are lies. Fabricated. And they will be proven wrong." Read Full Article

Salem-News.com Sports (May 15, 2006 10:42)No. 5 Beavers Keep Top Spot in Pac-10 Baseball Race Salem-News.com SPORTS(TEMPE, Ariz.) - Oregon State overcame a four-run deficit and the No.5-ranked Beavers held onto first place in the Pacific-10 baseball race with a 9-8 win over No. 17-ranked Arizona State on Sunday afternoon at Winkles Field/Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
OSU (35-13 overall, 12-6 Pac-10) is now two games ahead of ASU and and UCLA and 2 1/2 games ahead of Southern California.
The Beavers now go to Washington State next Friday through Sunday before returning home to finish the season against UCLA from May 26th-28th. Read Full Article

The Wolves earned the No. 1 seed in the west, and will face No. 6 Colorado State-Pueblo on Thursday at 7:00 PM.
No. 2 seed Chico State will square off against No. 5 Fort Hays State in the opening game at noon, while No. 3 Mesa State will play No. 4 Cal State LA at 3:30 PM. Read Full Article

(CORVALLIS) - Making their eighth consecutive NCAA postseason appearance, the No. 7 seeded Oregon State University softball team will host the NCAA Regional Tournament for the first time in program history. The Beavers (38-13) will face University of Nevada (33-31) at 4:00 PM on Friday at the OSU Softball Complex. Portland State University (37-18) will face Baylor University (36-20) in the tournament`s opening game at 1:00 PM.
Oregon State is one of 64 NCAA Division I schools selected to compete at 16 regional sites for a chance to advance to the College World Series from June 1st-6th, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
“Anytime you can play at home and on your own field, it`s a great opportunity“ said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. “To be able to host in the postseason is something that we`ve never had an opportunity to do and so we`re very excited.“ Read Full Article

Salem-News.com Sports (May 13, 2006 23:48)Former Boxer Floyd Patterson Dies at 71 By TIM DAHLBERG, AP Boxing Writer(NEW YORK – AP) - Floyd Patterson, who avenged an embarrassing loss to Ingemar Johansson by beating him a year later to become the first boxer to regain the heavyweight title, died Thursday. He was 71.Patterson died at his home in New Paltz, N.Y. He had Alzheimer's disease for about eight years and prostate cancer, nephew Sherman Patterson said.
Patterson's career was marked by historic highs and humiliating lows.
He emerged from a troubled childhood in Brooklyn to win the Olympic middleweight championship in 1952. Read Full Article

SALEM-NEWS.COM Sports(TUCSON, AZ) - The No. 3 ranked University of Arizona softball team squeaked out a 1-0 victory over No. 7 ranked Oregon State University in Friday`s Pacific-10 Conference thriller.
In Pac-10 fashion, the game worked out to be a classic pitcher`s dual between Oregon State All-American Brianne McGowan and Arizona All-American Alicia Hollowell.
Arizona got the lead-off batter aboard in three of the first four innings, but stellar Oregon State defensive plays and big pitches from McGowan kept the game scoreless.
Beaver catcher Lisa Allen gunned down Wildcat speedster Caitlin Lowe`s steal attempt in the opening frame and with a pair of runners in scoring position in the second inning, McGowan fanned Taryne Mowatt and OSU first baseman DeAnn Young snagged a line-drive to get out of the inning unscathed.
