(EUGENE, Ore. ) - Emeralds baseball logoChristopher Perez and three relievers combined on a two-hitter as Eugene stifled visiting Salem-Keizer, 6-1, on Friday.

Perez allowed one run on a hit and a walk with three strikeouts over four innings before Matt Handley gave up one hit and fanned one in the fifth.

Justin Baum sparked a six-run sixth with a leadoff homer.

Nike Suspends Michael Vick`s Contract

The moves come one day after Vick pleaded not guilty to federal dogfighting charges in Richmond, Virginia.

Corban Inks Former Gladstone High Softball Player

In the classroom, Jones was named valedictorian of her 2007 senior class and was also a member of the National Honor Society.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - corban sports logoCorban first-year head softball coach Nathan Ohta signed his first official recruit as the leader of the Warriors Thursday when he inked former Gladstone High School utility player Jessie Jones to a Letter of Intent to play for Corban beginning next season.

Jones played four seasons for the Gladiators, while turning senior season numbers of .581 batting average, .621 on-base percentage, 25 runs batted in, 51 runs scored, 39 stolen bases out of 40 attempts, and a .930 fielding percentage.

Bears Rout Volcanoes, 12-2

Clayton Conner went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his fourth, in the first for the Bears.

(KEIZER, Ore. ) - Volcanoes baseball logoKonrad Schmidt homered and drove in a career-high four runs as visiting Yakima cruised past Salem-Keizer, 12-2, on Thursday.

Schmidt stroked a run-scoring single in the fourth inning and delivered an RBI groundout in the sixth before launching a two-run blast, his fourth, in the eighth.

The 22-year-old catcher has homered in two of his last three games.

Wake Forest Head Coach Skip Prosser Dead at 56

Prosser is survived by his wife Nancy and sons Scott, 28, and Mark, 27.

(WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.) - Skip Prosser photoWake Forest University men's basketball coach Skip Prosser died Thursday afternoon in his office on campus.

Prosser, 56, had been jogging on the Kentner Stadium Track adjacent to his office in the Manchester Athletic Center at about noon.

Prosser compiled a 126-68 record in six seasons as the head coach of the Demon Deacons and led the team to five postseason appearances including four trips to the NCAA Tournament.

“Our focus right now is squarely on Houston,” head coach Mike Bellotti said in reference to UO’s Sept. 1 opener at Autzen Stadium.

The Beavers are coming off a 10-4 season, the second most successful season in the program’s 109-year history.

Salem Police Arrest Yakima Bears Player on Rape Charge

The charges stem from the victim being unable to consent to sexual activity due to her age and not due to force.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Norman Joel Melendez-Ramos Early Thursday morning, police detectives in Salem, Oregon arrested 21-year-old Norman Joel Melendez-Ramos on charges of Rape in the Third Degree.

Melendez-Ramos is a baseball player for the Yakima Bears, a minor league affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, that is currently in Salem for a series of games against the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.

The U.S. will attempt to get on the winning track Thursday when it faces Panama (0-1) in a 6:45 p.m. (EDT) game.

D.J. White finished with 14 points and nine rebounds and Maarty Leunen recorded 14 points and seven boards to pace the U.S.
